AIM: To identify the reasons for the fostering of children, and to describe their feeding practices and assess their health and nutritional status.
METHODS: Forty-six pairs of mothers and their young foster children (up to 24 mo of age) were interviewed in a cross-sectional study in the urban slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Another 82 pairs of mothers and their biological children of a similar age group were interviewed for comparison.
RESULTS: Sixty-five percent of the children were fostered because of the death of their biological mothers. Eighty-three percent of the biological mothers died be

Among youth in foster care (N = 303, aged 11-17 years), we investigated prevalence of internalizing symptoms; associations between symptom level and maltreatment types and numbers; and the interaction between gender and maltreatment, on internalizing symptoms. Youth completed Spence Children Anxiety Scale, Short Mood Feelings Questionnaire, and Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen. Compared to community samples, symptom levels above clinical cut-off was more frequent, with social- and generalized anxiety (ES = 0.78-0.88) being most prevalent among youth in foster care. Girls reported more intern

BACKGROUND: Despite policies designed to preserve family structures, Indigenous children in the U.S. and Canada remain disproportionately removed from their homes and communities. This systemic removal represents an ongoing form of historical trauma with intergenerational consequences, yet research on its long-term psychosocial effects remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence of foster care and adoption among a sample of Indigenous youth and their associations with psychosocial outcomes in early adulthood.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Data come from a community-based participatory

A growing number of children over age 10 reside in and emancipate from foster care every year. Older children face many of the same challenges as younger children, but they also have unique developmental needs. This article discusses older children in the child welfare system and finds: Approximately 47% of children in foster care are over age 11, and in 2001, 20% of children leaving foster care were over age 16. Older children need permanency, stability, and a "forever family." Maintaining connections with siblings and other kin can be a crucial resource for older children as they transition

Attachment has been assessed in children living in alternative care (AC) settings, such as Residential Homes (RC) and Foster Care (FC). However, no study has been conducted to compare attachment styles in residential, foster and parental care conducted as usual in the same country at the same point in time. There is also a lack of studies conducted in less developed countries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare outcomes for children living in three different types of care in Chile. Three groups of children (N=77), living in (RC), (FC) and with biological parents (PC) were compared

The mother-child relationship of newborns plays an essential role in the development of the central nervous system, and an inadequate relationship, such as mother-child separation, can cause deficits of mental function in adulthood. However, insufficient research has examined the effects of foster mothers. We assigned some neonatal rats to one of two foster mothers: one that was lactating and feeding her first litter (FL group) and one that had one previous experience of childbirth and feeding but no current litter (FE group). Other pups were raised by their own mother (OM group) or subjected

BACKGROUND: Trauma-informed parenting interventions have been used in child welfare to help caregivers respond to children in trauma-informed ways that can mitigate the effects of maltreatment and build strong caregiver-child relationships. Existing studies support their effectiveness with children and youth involved in the child welfare system. However, to further advance the effectiveness of evidenced-based intervention for child welfare populations, one key step is to identify subgroups of individuals who have different intervention responses or outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To identify pre-treatme

Sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are overrepresented in the foster care system and experience greater foster-care-related stressors than their non-SGM peers. These factors may further elevate their risk of anxiety/depressive, post-traumatic stress disorder, self-harm, and suicidality. The system currently produces unequal and disproportionate adverse mental health outcomes for SGMY and needs points of intervention to disrupt this status quo. This article provides an empirically grounded conceptual-theoretical model of disproportionate representation and burden of psychological comorbidi

BACKGROUND: The majority of children in foster care 24 months or longer experience three or more placements. Children's behavior problems are a primary contributor to multiple moves, but little is known about how behavior problems and other stressors lead to disruptions. This study focused on foster parents' experiences of parenting a child at risk for moves using the determinants of parenting model (Belsky, 1984) to identify potential correlates of difficult parenting experiences and placement disruption.
OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with difficult parenting experiences and plac

Many foster youth experience maltreatment in their family-of-origin and additional maltreatment while in foster care. Not surprisingly, rates of depression are higher in foster youth than the general population, and peak during ages 17-19 during the stressful transition into adulthood. However, no known studies have reported on whether foster youth perceive positive changes following such adversity, and whether positive change facilitates psychological adjustment over time. The current study examined components of positive change (i.e., compassion for others and self-efficacy) with depression

Guardianship is an increasingly popular alternative to adoption for children in foster care, but evidence of its long-term safety and continuity remains limited. Using California child protection system (CPS) records, the study followed all children born 1999-2005 who exited foster care to guardianship before age 18 (N = 16,408). Rates and predictors of post-guardianship CPS referrals and reentries were estimated and allegations were categorized as involving biological parents or guardians. Overall, 59% of children who exited to guardianship had a subsequent CPS referral and 19% reentered care

Every day, in the United States, children are removed from their homes and placed into state supervised out-of-home care because of concerns around their safety. These children enter care as a result of child abuse, child neglect, abandonment or some other reasons. Lost in most discussions of out-of-home care is the role that parental incarceration and parental death have on the trajectory of children through the child welfare system. In order to address this gap in the literature, the present study aims to compare youth in foster care as a result of parental death or youth in foster care as a

BACKGROUND: Youth who are or have been in foster care (foster youth) are at higher risk for adverse outcomes in early adulthood. As the importance and complexity of victimization experiences, including types, timing, and perpetrators, is better understood it is unclear whether or to what extent the research on foster youth assesses polyvictimization. Because many types of victimization, such as community violence, are under-reported or absent in the administrative data typically used for research with foster care populations, self-reports of victimization experiences are necessary to comprehen

The development of the Internet and computer-mediated communications has fostered the growth of a wide range of deviant sexual behaviors along with deviant subcultures that support and approve of these behaviors. Some of these practices pose little risk to public safety, though acts such as pedophilia and the creation and distribution of child pornography have significant negative ramifications for victims. A growing literature has examined the function of the Internet for child pornography distribution, social networks of pedophiles, and tactics of child solicitation. Few, however, have explo

This study employed visually evoked event-related potential (ERP) methodology to examine temporal patterns of structural and higher-level face processing in birth and foster/adoptive mothers viewing pictures of their children. Fourteen birth mothers and 14 foster/adoptive mothers engaged in a computerized task in which they viewed facial pictures of their own children, and of familiar and unfamiliar children and adults. All mothers, regardless of type, showed ERP patterns suggestive of increased attention allocation to their own children's faces compared to other child and adult faces beginnin

OBJECTIVE: Children who spend time in foster care are at risk for adverse developmental outcomes, including sleep problems. Yet, research examining sleep and emotional memory has primarily focused on children with no history of foster care placement. Additionally, most accounts of sleep problems among children with a foster care history rely on caregiver-report rather than objective measures. This study examined emotional memory and sleep using both objective and subjective reports.
METHODS: Participants included 3- to 5-year-old children who were adopted from foster care in the U.S. (n = 32)

Sibling programming is an important part of a prevention framework, particularly for youth in foster care. After children are removed from their families and placed into foster care in the aftermath of maltreatment, the sibling relationship is often the most viable ongoing relationship available to the child, and may be critical to a youth's sense of connection, emotional support, and continuity. The promise of dyadic sibling programming in particular rests on the ability of interventions to enhance the quality of sibling relationships; yet little research exists that suggests that sibling int

The current study examined the effect of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), a parent-training intervention for child behavior problems, on child language production. Participants were 46 children (ages 20-70 months) with externalizing behavior problems and with or at risk for developmental delay. Parent-child dyads were randomly assigned to a waitlist control or immediate treatment group. Parenting skills learned during PCIT (i.e., "do skills") and children's word tokens and word types were measured at baseline and 4 months later. Findings suggest an indirect effect of parent do skills o

BACKGROUND: Foster youth placed in congregate care often report more risk and fewer protective factors for mental health compared to foster youth residing in other settings.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address a gap in the literature by examining how childhood trauma and perceived social support are associated with depressive symptoms among youth with histories of residential care or group home placement.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Secondary analysis was employed using data from the "Voyages" study. Foster youth (N = 404) completed a battery of surveys including demographics, placement hist

BACKGROUND: Children in foster care and institutional settings experience disproportionately high rates of mental health disorders, yet large-scale data on psychiatric comorbidities in this population remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and patterns of psychiatric diagnoses within one year of placement in foster care or institutional care, with attention to demographic disparities and comorbidity burden.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used de-identified electronic health record data from the TriNetX network, identifying U.S. children placed in foster or institution
