Three cases of chronic nonhaemolytic jaundice with conjugated bilirubin in the serum are described in a Chinese family. Bromsulphthalein excretion tests gave results typical of the Dubin-Johnson syndrome. The value of biliary scintigraphy was studied in 180 patients with suspected biliary tract disease. Scintigraphy was performed after intravenous injection of technetium-99m labelled (1) N-substituted iminodiacetic acid derivative (HIDA) in 91 patients, and (2) butyl derivative of iminodiacetic acid (BIDA) in 89 patients. In eight patients without a history of gallbladder disease, cholecystostomy was performed for acute pancreatitis (four patients) and blunt abdominal trauma (four patients). We used Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in 77 patient in whom oral cholecystography failed to visualize the gallbladder. ERCP did not visualize the gallbladder in 42%, and poorly visualized it in 58%, however, there was no significant difference in the disease distribution between non- and poorly visualized cases. 63 of the 77 patients underwent surgery. A prospective study designed to establish the incidence of gallstones among 48 Nigerian homozygous sickle cell disease patients was made using oral cholecystography and grey-scale ultrasonography. The age range was 2 to 35 years with a mean of 16 years. The youngest patient with gallstones was a 51/2-year-old boy. Gallstones were demonstrated on cholecystosonography in 12 of 48 patients (25%).
