Outcomes of Percutaneous Cholecystostomy as a Bridging or Definitive Treatment for Acute Cholecystitis.

Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is a minimally invasive intervention for managing acute cholecystitis in patients unfit for immediate cholecystectomy. Although it is widely used, its outcomes and factors influencing clinical success are not well understood. Objectives The goal of this study was to assess the outcomes of PC by examining various factors such as gender, type of cholecystitis, and procedure timing to correlate with symptom improvement, mortality, and the need for additional medical interventions. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at The Royal Oldham Hos

Percutaneous Cholecystostomy to Manage a Hot Gallbladder: A Single Center Experience.

Objective A percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is a suitable option for treating acutely inflamed gallbladders. Its use has been postulated before for treating acute cholecystitis (AC), especially in elderly populations. The primary aim of our study is to analyze and present the positive results of PC as a bridge to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods All patients who underwent PC at our hospital, Princess Royal University Hospital, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, GBR, from October 2020 were reviewed using a retrospective approach. Results Our study comprises 123 patient

Should cholangiography be part of the management of every patient with percutaneous cholecystostomy?

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PCC) is a well-established treatment in patients with high surgical risk and those who failed conservative treatment. However, the role of cholangiography in the management of PCC patients is not clear. In our medical center, cholangiography is routinely performed before discharging patient with PCC. We aimed to evaluate the utility of this test and its effect on the patient's management. METHODS: The study included all patients managed with PCC between 2015 to 2017. The patients were divided to those with positive findings and those with no finding

Should percutaneous cholecystostomy be used in all cases difficult to manage?

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is the well-accepted management method for acute cholecystitis in patients suitable for surgery. Percutaneous cholecystostomy is planned and used in patients at high surgical risk due to acute symptomatic cholecystitis and/or acute or chronic comorbidity. Percutaneous cholecystostomy can provide permanent treatment, or it may act as a bridge for elective cholecystectomy. METHODS: We presented the outcomes of 50 patients who initially underwent ultrasound-guided transhepatic percutaneous cholecystostomy and 4-6 weeks later, an interval cholecystectomy. All patients

Percutaneous cholecystostomy in the management of acute cholecystitis - 10 years of experience.

INTRODUCTION: The preferred treatment for acute cholecystitis is cholecystectomy, but for patients with precluded general anesthesia due to critical illness or multiple medical comorbidities it is not suitable. Cholecystostomy could be a minimally invasive therapeutic alternative. AIM: To retrospectively evaluate the indications, technical features, efficacy, complications, patients' development and relationships among monitored parameters of percutaneous computed tomography (CT)-guided cholecystostomies in cases of acute cholecystitis and find the role of this procedure in appropriate treatm

Cholecystectomy Vs. Cholecystostomy for the Management of Acute Cholecystitis in Elderly Patients.

BACKGROUND: Data comparing outcomes following cholecystectomy and cholecystostomy tube placement (CTP) in elderly patients are lacking. We aimed to compare the post-procedural outcomes between cholecystectomy and CTP in elderly patients with acute cholecystitis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, population-based analysis using the National Inpatient Sample for the period 2000-2014. Patients ≥ 65 years old admitted with a primary diagnosis of acute cholecystitis and who underwent either cholecystectomy or CTP during their hospitalization were included. Percutaneous Cholecystostomy in Acute Cholecystitis-Predictors of Recurrence and Interval Cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) tube is a preferred option in acute cholecystitis for patients who are high risk for cholecystectomy (CCY). There are no evidence-based guidelines for patient care after PC. We identified the predictors of disease recurrence and successful interval CCY. METHODS: A retrospective review of 145 PC patients between 2008 and 2016 at a tertiary hospital was performed. Primary outcomes included mortality, readmissions, hospital and intensive care unit length of stay (LOS), disease recurrence, and interval CCY. RESULTS: There were 96 (67%) calculous and

Outcomes in the Utilization of Single Percutaneous Cholecystostomy in a Low-Income Population.

Numerous studies have investigated the applicable populations for percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) procedures, but the outcomes of PC in low-income populations (LIPs) have been insufficiently studied. Data for 11,184 patients who underwent PC were collected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan during 2003 and 2012. The overall crude rate of single PC for the LIP was 64% higher than that for the general population (GP). After propensity score matching for the LIP and GP at a ratio of 1:5, the outcome analysis of patients who underwent PC showed that in-hospital mortal

Percutaneous cholecystostomy in critically ill patients with a cholecystitis: a safe option.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is the standard procedure in patients with acute cholecystitis. However, some patients might not be able to undergo immediate surgery because of severe sepsis or underlying comorbid conditions. Percutaneous cholecystostomy is a minimally invasive radiological procedure under local anesthesia which seems to be an effective alternative to conservative treatment or immediate laparoscopic/open cholecystectomy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 35 patients who underwent percutaneous cholecystostomy between 2003 and 2009. RESULTS: Percutaneous cholecystostomy was tec

Percutaneous cholecystostomy as a bridge to definitive endoscopic gallbladder stent placement.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Percutaneous cholecystostomy (PC) is an effective treatment for acute cholecystitis (AC) in patients who are poor surgical candidates, although it is generally used as a bridge to cholecystectomy, given its long-term risks, the need for repeated procedures, and patient dissatisfaction. Ongoing patient comorbidity, however, might preclude cholecystectomy after recovery from the acute illness. METHODS: Four patients with AC who were poor immediate and long-term candidates for cholecystectomy underwent PC as primary therapy for AC, followed by endoscopic placement of a transpa

[The results of a long-term follow-up of patients with a percutaneous cholecystostomy].

19 out of 37 patients with percutaneous cholecystostomy were followed up for assessment of gallbladder function after percutaneous drainage. 17 out of 19 of the patients remained free from symptoms of gallbladder disease during a mean follow-up period of 25.8 months. Contractility of the gallbladder calculated by measurement of the sonographic diameter of the gallbladder with provocation tests was 62%. One patient was operated upon for choledocholithiasis three years after percutaneous cholecystostomy. Histology showed signs of chronic cholecystitis. It can be concluded that cholecystectomy is

A preliminary report of percutaneous cholecystostomy under ultrasonography and fluoroscopy guidance.

We carried out percutaneous cholecystostomy and cholangiography without incident under guidance of ultrasonography and fluoroscopy in three patients with obstructive jaundice, cholangitis, and acute cholecystitis. The technique appears to be safe and can be performed at the patient's bedside, which gives it an advantage over surgical drainage. Moreover, the percutaneous route can be used for biliary drainage when the transhepatic approach is not possible.

Factors affecting interval cholecystectomy and mortality in percutaneous cholecystostomy patients.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous cholecystostomy is an alternative or bridge to cholecystectomy (CCY) in high-risk patients with acute calculous cholecystitis. Our primary aim was to determine the parameters that could be used in interval CCY decision-making and to predict mortality in high-risk patients. METHODS: The medical records of 127 patients who underwent percutaneous cholecystostomy for acute calculous cholecystitis between 2010 and 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. The primary outcomes were the CCY rate and the factors affecting mortality in high-risk patients. Descriptive statistics and

What happens after percutaneous cholecystostomy tube for acute calculous cholecystitis?

BACKGROUND: Acute cholecystitis is commonly treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy, if feasible. However, critically ill patients can be managed with a percutaneous cholecystostomy tube (PCT) for biliary drainage. This is a temporizing measure and does not represent a final treatment. We aimed to compare the outcomes of performing an interval cholecystectomy vs. conservative management after PCT placement. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all patients with a PCT placed for acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC) at a single center from October 2010 to March 2015. RESULTS: Ninety
