BACKGROUND: Fenugreek and chromium are known to have anti-diabetic properties and this has been well demonstrated by multiple studies. Researches have been undertaken to study thebiofortification of chromium (Cr3+) in fenugreek. Some of the researchers have studied the biofortification from the soil irrigated with tannery waste water or from soil amended by tannery-sludge, with a view of enhancing the anti-diabetic effect of fenugreek plants. The present research work was also undertaken to increase the chromium content of fenugreek seeds, but through direct treatment of chromium picolinate so…

In order to assess the possibility of using lignin to remove Cr(III) from waters, the adsorption of Cr(III) on lignin isolated from black liquor, a waste product of the paper industry, was investigated. The influences of pH, lignin dosage, contact time, ionic strength, Cr(III) concentration and other metals were investigated. The Cr(III) adsorption was strongly dependent on pH and adsorbent dosage, but independent of ionic strength and other metal ions. The adsorption kinetic data can be described well with pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium data can be well fitted using Langmuir tw

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to measure the dermal and respiratory exposure levels of hexavalent chromium during electroplating work.
METHODS: Potential dermal exposure of the body was measured with patch samples and actual exposure of hands with hand-wash samples. For comparison, personal air samples were also collected.
RESULTS: The exposure varied widely between workers. The range of body and hand exposure to the electroplating solution was 0.17-28.1 mg/h and 0.04-6.37 mg/h, respectively. Hands and lower limbs were the most contaminated body parts.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of bre…

Chromium is a naturally occurring heavy metal found commonly in the environment in trivalent, Cr(III), and hexavalent, Cr(VI), forms. Cr(VI) compounds have been declared as a potent occupational carcinogen among workers in chrome plating, stainless steel, and pigment industries. The reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) results in the formation of reactive intermediates that together with oxidative stress oxidative tissue damage and a cascade of cellular events including modulation of apoptosis regulatory gene p53, contribute to the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity of Cr(VI)-containing …

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of Cr(III) (chromium chloride) and Cr(VI) (potassium dichromate) on RNA and DNA-chromium adducts formation in isolated nucleic acids and isolated pig lymphocytes. The incubation of cells with potassium dichromate and chromium chloride at concentrations of 10 and 100 microM results in binding of a 1.2-1.9 fold greater number of chromium atoms to nuclear DNA than to total cellular RNA. The incubation of total cellular RNA and nuclear DNA isolated from lymphocytes with CrCl3 and K2Cr2O7 yielded a binding of 1.1-1.6 fold more of Cr atoms to RNA…

Chromium is a highly toxic non-essential metal for microorganisms and plants. Due to its widespread industrial use, chromium (Cr) has become a serious pollutant in diverse environmental settings. The hexavalent form of the metal, Cr(VI), is considered a more toxic species than the relatively innocuous and less mobile Cr(III) form. The presence of Cr in the environment has selected microbial and plant variants able to tolerate high levels of Cr compounds. The diverse Cr-resistance mechanisms displayed by microorganisms, and probably by plants, include biosorption, diminished accumulation, preci…

This review summarizes the results of 15 controlled studies supplementing defined Cr(III) compounds to subjects with impaired glucose tolera … after long-term total parenteral alimentation responding to Cr supplementation have been reported. Chromium potentiates the action of insulin in vitro and in vivo; maximal in vitro activity requires a special chemical form, termed Glucose Tolerance Factor and tentatively identified as a Cr-nicotinic acid complex. Its complete structural identification is …

The known effects of trivalent chromium (Cr) in lowering blood levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL), raising high density lipoproteins (HDL) and improving glucose tolerance are summarised. Chromium deficiency cannot easily be established by direct means, but can be inferred by the reversal of symptoms and signs following the administration of trivalent chromium. This evidence can be supported by knowledge or suspicion of a deficiency in the diet, common in those who use highly refined cereal foods. It is considered that the beneficial effects of chromium repletion are now so well establish…

This article reviews approximately 700 results reported in the literature with 32 chromium compounds assayed in 130 short-term tests, using different targets and/or genetic end-points. The large majority of the results obtained with Cr(VI) compounds were positive, as a function of Cr(VI) solubility and bioavailability to target cells. On the other hand, Cr(III) compounds, although even more reactive than Cr(VI) with purified nucleic acids, did not induce genotoxic effects in the majority of studies using intact cells. Coupled with the findings of metabolic studies, the large data-base generate…

Evidence is provided that mutagenicity in Salmonella by a chromium(VI) salt and a chromium(III) compound has a differential dependence on the presence of oxygen. The mutagenic chromium(III) compound, cis-dichlorobis(2,2'-bipyridyl)chromium(III), reverted Salmonella strains, TA102 and TA2638, only under aerobic conditions. Potassium dichromate (chromium VI) required the presence of oxygen to revert the Salmonella strain TA102 but induced a moderate reversion frequency in TA2638 under anaerobic conditions. The data also support a role for oxygen radicals in chromium-mediated mutagenesis and sugg…

Forty-eight patients with a positive patch test to potassium dichromate 0.5% were retested after 4-7 years; 38 patients (79%) still had a positive patch test. Chromate allergy seems to be persistent. In 72% of the cases a history of occupational exposure to chromates could be proved.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is highly toxic and severely impairs plant growth and productivity. This study evaluated the role of exogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S), supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), in mitigating Cr (VI) stress in lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) grown in chromium-rich overburden soil (OBS) from the Sukinda chromite mine, Odisha, India. We hypothesized that H2S alleviates Cr (VI) toxicity by restricting Cr bioavailability and strengthening the glutathione (GSH)-mediated redox cycle. Cr (VI) stress reduced root and shoot length by 58 % and 62 %, whereas NaHS supplementat…

Chemical leaching techniques have been proven effective in removing heavy metal contaminants from soil using various leaching agents. Previous research has shown that both single-agent and composite leaching systems have been applied for the remediation of chromium-contaminated soils, with varying degrees of success depending on soil type and contaminant form. However, the removal rate of total chromium (Cr) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) often fluctuates based on the chemical composition of the leaching agents, as well as the soil's physicochemical properties, such as pH and Cr speciation s…
