ZW and XY Sex Chromosomes Drive Rapid and Distinctive Evolution of Sex-Biased Gene Expression.

Cichlids are a textbook model system of adaptive radiation and a fascinating example of rapid sex chromosome evolution. Yet in these fish, as in most other taxa, the mechanisms causing sex chromosome turnover and the subsequent impact thereof are unknown. Sexual antagonism was long thought to be a driver of sex chromosome emergence, but experimental support remains scarce. Here, we show that sex-biased genes, often used as indicators of sexual antagonism, are enriched in three different sex chromosome systems of Lake Tanganyika cichlid species that diverged less than 4 million years ago. Moreo…

Expression of pineal ultraviolet- and green-like opsins in the pineal organ and retina of teleosts.

In teleostean bony fishes, studies on the adults of various species have shown that pineal photoreceptors are maximally sensitive to short- and middle-wavelength light, possibly utilising both rod-like and pineal-specific opsins. Until recently, however, very little was known about the pineal opsins present in embryonic and larval teleosts and their relationships to opsins expressed by retinal photoreceptors. Our immunocytochemical studies have revealed that, in Atlantic halibut, herring and cod, pineal photoreceptors express principal phototransduction molecules during embryonic life before t

Characterization and localization of mRNA encoding the salmon-type gonadotrophin-releasing hormone precursor of the masu salmon.

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is considered to have an important role in the control of reproduction in salmonid fish, although we do not have any direct evidence. To clarify this problem by molecular techniques, we first determined the nucleotide sequence of the mRNA encoding the precursor of salmon-type GnRH (sGnRH) from the masu salmon, Oncorhynchus masou. The masu salmon sGnRH precursor was composed of a signal peptide, sGnRH and a GnRH-associated peptide (GAP) which was connected to sGnRH by a Gly-Lys-Arg sequence. The amino acid sequence of sGnRH and Gly-Lys-Arg were highly cons

Susceptibility to motion sickness in fish: a parabolic aircraft flight study.

Juvenile swordtail fish and larval cichlids were subjected to parabolic aircraft flights (PAFs) and individually observed. After the PAFs, inner ear otoliths and sensory epithelia were examined on the light microscopical level. Otolith asymmetry (differences in otolith size between the left and the right side) was especially pronounced in those fish, who exhibited a kinetotic behaviour (e.g., spinning movements) during microgravity. This speaks in favour of a theoretical concept according to which susceptibility to space motion sickness in humans may be based on asymmetric inner ear stones. Th…

Cellular basis of accelerated whole-tooth regeneration.

Teeth are ectodermal organs that have, throughout their long evolutionary history, retained the capacity for full regeneration and replacement, even in adult stages. Yet, because most mammals (e.g., humans, mice) lack lifelong dental replacement, we do not fully understand its tempo and mode, and we do not have a clear picture of the cell populations and signals that contribute to the process. Here, we used cichlid fishes from Lake Malawi, species that differ in tooth formula (tooth shape and number) but share one-for-one tooth replacement, to (i) explore the tempo of dental replacement after

Can Food Acquisition Priority Alter Emotion, Physiological Responses, and Social Rank in Fish?

Whether non-human animals can perceive and respond to inequitable resource distribution has become a prominent topic in behavioral and cogni … e behaviors, metabolic rates, dopamine levels, or social rank. These findings suggest that Demasoni cichlids may perceive inequity in food distribution, with differences in food intake and cortisol levels consistent with emotion-like states. However, because cortisol levels and feeding/nutritional state can influence each other, the extent to which these d …

Planting Strategies for Lettuce in an Aquaponic-BFT System with Nile Tilapia.

This study evaluated Lactuca sativa performance in an integrated aquaponic-biofloc system with Oreochromis niloticus using 500 L fish tanks, 100 L biofloc units, and NFT hydroponics under three planting strategies. The 30-day experiment showed no differences in water quality or fish performance among treatments. Treatment B (substrate without root cleaning) resulted in superior plant performance, with leaf height of 31.89 cm, lettuce productivity of 2.98 kg/m³, and highest system productivity of 8.15 kg/m³. Root-associated floc accumulation did not negatively affect growth. The integrated syst

Alterations in hematological parameters and the structure of peripheral erythrocytes in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to profenofos.

The burden of pesticide use from agricultural intensification lies in the fact that pesticides may end up in aquatic ecosystems and have pernicious effects on non-target organisms, including fish. Different blood biomarkers, including hemato-biochemical indices, erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA), and erythrocytic cellular abnormalities (ECA), were observed in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after exposure to varying sub-lethal concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40% of 96-h LC50) of profenofos at different time intervals (7, 14, 21, and 28 days). The results revealed that glucose

Distinct skin morphological and transcriptomic profiles between wild and albino Oscar Astronotus ocellatus.

Oscar Astronotus ocellatus is an important ornamental fish, including albino and wild varieties. Albino individuals attract aquarium hobbyists due to their unique body color, but studies on the species' albinism mechanism are currently scarce. Here, we investigated the morphological and transcriptomic profiles of the skin of albino and wild Oscar. The results showed that the albino type had fewer oval-shaped melanophores and immature melanosomes but that the wild type contained more stellate-shaped melanophores and mature melanosomes. Albino Oscar had a degenerative pigment layer without obvio

Toxicity of palm oil mill effluent on the early life stages of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus 1758).

Harmful effects of several pollutants have been reported on early life stages of fish. However, the effects of palm oil mill effluent (POME) on fish early life stages are still unexplored. Therefore, the objective of this present study was to elucidate the impact of POME on the early life stages of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fertilized eggs of Nile tilapia were exposed to four concentrations of POME (0, 1.565, 2.347, and 3.130 mg/L) in 20 plastic funnels. Each of the control and treatment groups was maintained in five replicates. The cumulative hatching rate, malformation rate, body

Ithyoclinostomum yamagutii n. sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in the great blue heron Ardea herodias L. (Aves: Ardeidae) from Mississippi, USA.

With only six recognised genera, the family Clinostomidae Lühe, 1901 remains a global research interest of parasitologists and ecologists. R … ular evidence from metacercariae suggests a second Ithyoclinostomum species may exist in freshwater cichlids in Central America and Mexico. In a recent survey of great blue herons Ardea herodias L. from commercial catfish production farms in Mississippi, USA, two specimens of an abnormally large (> 20 mm) clinostomid were encountered in the oesophagus of a …

Growth acceleration of Nile tilapia at 21 to 31 weeks of age with plasma-treated air-supplied water.

This study aimed to develop a technique to accelerate fish growth without using genetic modification or genome editing. We have prepared a reactor with four pairs of opposed electrodes and a high-voltage power supply for the discharge. An arc discharge generates a plasma-treated gas in the reactor. Plasma-treated gas containing active species such as nitric oxide (NO) was generated via an arc discharge in the atmosphere and inserted into an aquarium containing Nile tilapia. No ozone was detected in the plasma-treated gas. Plasma treatment gas was supplied to the 20 L tank at a flow rate of 10

The effects of colchicine on the ultrastructure of the dental epithelium and odontoblasts of teleost tooth buds.

Secretory granule ultrastructure of teleost inner dental epithelial (IDE) cells has been reported to be similar to procollagen granules of other cells synthesizing collagen. This study describes the ultrastructure of secretory products in odontogenic cells during enameloid matrix formation in cichlids after inhibition of granule secretion with colchicine. Thirty-six fish were injected with 0.1 mg colchicine, then three were killed first at 2-hr intervals for 12 hr, then daily for 5 days. Tooth buds were processed for transmission electron microscopy, and ultrastructural alterations were assess…

Genome assemblies for Chromidotilapia guntheri (Teleostei: Cichlidae) identify a novel candidate gene for vertebrate sex determination, RIN3.

Advances in genome sequencing have greatly accelerated the identification of sex chromosomes in a variety of species. Many of these species have experienced structural rearrangements that reduce recombination between the sex chromosomes, allowing the accumulation of sequence differences over many megabases. Identification of the genes that are responsible for sex determination within these sometimes large regions has proved difficult. Here, we identify an XY sex chromosome system on LG19 in the West African cichlid fish Chromidotilapia guntheri in which the region of differentiation extends ov

Interactive impact of salinity and oxygen level on the growth performance, digestive enzymes, serum biochemistry, antioxidative, immunity, and histological status of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Climate change, including global warming, is associated with an increase in water temperature, which leads to increased water evaporation from water bodies, resulting in elevated salinity and decreased dissolved oxygen (DO2) levels. This may deteriorate fish health and productivity, and threaten the sustainability of aquaculture. Hence, the current study was carried out to investigate the interactions between hypoxia and increased salinity, as well as their impact on growth parameters, digestive enzymes, serum biochemistry, antioxidative response, and histopathology in Nile tilapia (Oreochromi

Chondroitin Sulfate from Oreochromis niloticus Waste Reduces Leukocyte Influx in an Acute Peritonitis Model.

Oreochromis niloticus (tilapia) is one of the most cultivated fish species worldwide. Tilapia farming generates organic waste from fish removal processes in nurseries. Visceral waste can damage natural ecosystems. Therefore, the use of this material as a source of biomolecules helps reduce environmental impacts and improve pharmacological studies. Tilapia viscera were subjected to proteolysis and complexation with an ion-exchange resin. The obtained glycosaminoglycans were purified using ion exchange chromatography (DEAE-Sephacel). The electrophoretic profile and analysis of 1H/13C nuclear mag

Body shape convergence driven by small size optimum in marine angelfishes.

Convergent evolution of small body size occurs across many vertebrate clades and may reflect an evolutionary response to shared selective pressures. However it remains unclear if other aspects of phenotype undergo convergent evolution in miniaturized lineages. Here we present a comparative analysis of body size and shape evolution in marine angelfishes (Pomacanthidae), a reef fish family characterized by repeated transitions to small body size. We ask if lineages that evolve small sizes show convergent evolution in body shape. Our results reveal that angelfish lineages evolved three different
