From group climate to flow in ultimate frisbee: An indirect pathway through autonomous motivation.

Ultimate frisbee is a peer-regulated sport in which self-officiation makes interpersonal interaction integral to participation. Guided by Self-Determination Theory, this study examined cross-sectional structural associations among Group Climate, Autonomous Motivation, and global Flow Experience in 368 ultimate frisbee participants in China. Group Climate reflected Engagement and the relative absence of Conflict. Participants completed Chinese-language measures of group climate, sport motivation, and flow; confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and bootstrap procedures were

The response of streams in the Adirondack region of New York to projected changes in sulfur and nitrogen deposition under changing climate.

Modeling studies project that in the future surface waters in the northeast US will continue to recover from acidification over decades following reductions in atmospheric sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions. However, these studies generally assume stationary climatic conditions over the simulation period and ignore the linkages between soil and surface water recovery from acid deposition and changing climate, despite fundamental impacts to watershed processes and comparable time scales for both phenomena. In this study, the integrated biogeochemical model PnET-BGC was applied to two

Climate Change and Food Allergy: Adaptations and Risks at the Intersection of Environment and Health.

Climate change has emerged as a major global public health challenge, and its impact on allergic diseases, particularly food allergy, has received increasing attention. It enhances allergic exposure risks through multiple pathways, including alterations in the expression of allergenic proteins, shifts in the geographic distribution of allergenic species, increased allergenic microbial pollution, and changes in pollen exposure patterns that may exacerbate allergic responses. Furthermore, climate change could elevate individual susceptibility to food allergy via diverse biological mechanisms, su

Hunters of the Ice Age: The biology of Upper Paleolithic people.

The Upper Paleolithic represents both the phase during which anatomically modern humans appeared and the climax of hunter-gatherer cultures. Demographic expansion into new areas that took place during this period and the diffusion of burial practices resulted in an unprecedented number of well-preserved human remains. This skeletal record, dovetailed with archeological, environmental, and chronological contexts, allows testing of hypotheses regarding biological processes at the population level. In this article, we review key studies about the biology of Upper Paleolithic populations based pri

An explainable and causally informed machine learning framework for hydrological drought transitions, propagation, and vulnerability.

Hydrological droughts (HDs) pose increasing challenges to water-system management, yet the processes governing their wet-dry transitions, propagation delays, and resulting vulnerability remain poorly resolved. Here, we developed an explainable and causally informed machine-learning (ECML) framework to distinguish basin-wide attribution from region-specific relationships and applied it to the monsoon-influenced Yuan-Red River Basin. Meteorological predictors accounted for 63.97% of the total predictive attribution to HD variability, led by precipitation of 36.81%, which exhibited a nonlinear pr

Modelling Xylella fastidiosa Infection Dynamics in Grapevines: A Physiologically Based Approach.

Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa (Xff), the causal agent of Pierce's Disease (PD) in grapevine, is a major threat to global viticulture. However, the mechanisms governing infection establishment, persistence, and recovery within grapevine hosts remain insufficiently characterized. We developed a novel physiologically based infection model that explicitly describes the population dynamics and within-plant spread of Xff in grapevine plants as a function of temperature and host phenology. Grapevines are represented as structured hosts composed of two interacting compartments: permanent woody

Morphological diversity of Triatoma infestans across biogeographic zones of Chile.

Triatoma infestans, the primary domiciliary vector of Chagas disease in Chile, has a broad geographic distribution and is characterized by high synanthropy and strong colonization capacity. Landscape characteristics are key factors in understanding population distribution and the processes that shape morphological variation. This study aimed to characterize the structures associated with dispersal and feeding using geometric morphometrics in domiciliary adults of T. infestans (n = 353 total specimens analyzed) along a latitudinal gradient (∼1,255 km). Furthermore, the specimens' localities wer

Adaptive introgression as a driver of local adaptation to climate in European white oaks.

Latitudinal and elevational gradients provide valuable experimental settings for studies of the potential impact of global warming on forest tree species. The availability of long-term phenological surveys in common garden experiments for traits associated with climate, such as bud flushing for sessile oaks (Quercus petraea), provide an ideal opportunity to investigate this impact. We sequenced 18 sessile oak populations and used available sequencing data for three other closely related European white oak species (Quercus pyrenaica, Quercus pubescens, and Quercus robur) to explore the evolutio

Evidence for divergent patterns of local selection driving venom variation in Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus).

Snake venoms represent an enriched system for investigating the evolutionary processes that lead to complex and dynamic trophic adaptations. It has long been hypothesized that natural selection may drive geographic variation in venom composition, yet previous studies have lacked the population genetic context to examine these patterns. We leverage range-wide sampling of Mojave Rattlesnakes (Crotalus scutulatus) and use a combination of venom, morphological, phylogenetic, population genetic, and environmental data to characterize the striking dichotomy of neurotoxic (Type A) and hemorrhagic (Ty

Climate Change Worry and Flourishing Among Chinese University Students: The Roles of Anxiety-Depressive Symptoms and Physical Activity.

Background/Objectives: Climate change worry is an emerging concern in youth mental health, but little is known about how it is associated with positive psychological functioning among university students. This study examined whether climate change worry was associated with flourishing and whether this association showed a cross-sectional statistical indirect effect through anxiety and depressive symptoms, with physical activity specified as a first-stage boundary condition. Methods: A cross-sectional anonymous survey was conducted in 2026 using convenience sampling among students from four uni

Defining climate change acceptance in undergraduate science student populations: A Delphi study.

Acceptance of climate change often promotes pro-environmental behavior and encourages greater support of climate change policy and mitigation strategies. Despite its important role, no standardized definition of climate change acceptance exists in the published literature, leading to significant variability in how it is measured by researchers. Additionally, climate change is included in many educational frameworks as a vital curricular topic for establishing scientific literacy; however, student acceptance is neglected as a key factor. This ambiguity makes it difficult to compare research fin

Possible climates on terrestrial exoplanets.

What kind of environment may exist on terrestrial planets around other stars? In spite of the lack of direct observations, it may not be premature to speculate on exoplanetary climates, for instance, to optimize future telescopic observations or to assess the probability of habitable worlds. To begin with, climate primarily depends on (i) the atmospheric composition and the volatile inventory; (ii) the incident stellar flux; and (iii) the tidal evolution of the planetary spin, which can notably lock a planet with a permanent night side. The atmospheric composition and mass depends on complex p

Spatial and temporal variation in nest temperatures forecasts sex ratio skews in a crocodilian with environmental sex determination.

Species displaying temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) are especially vulnerable to the effects of a rapidly changing global climate due to their profound sensitivity to thermal cues during development. Predicting the consequences of climate change for these species, including skewed offspring sex ratios, depends on understanding how climatic factors interface with features of maternal nesting behaviour to shape the developmental environment. Here, we measure thermal profiles in 86 nests at two geographically distinct sites in the northern and southern regions of the American alligat

Elevated CO2 and Temperature Alter Grass Pollen's Ability to Modify Transcriptome and Function of the Nasal Epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Climate change increases exposure to pollen, but the effects of climate-related factors on the potency of pollen to trigger early events in the epithelium are unknown, despite their significant impact on respiratory health. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether climate change affects the capacity of grass pollen to mediate cell functions in human nasal epithelium. METHODS: Toxicological and immunological responses, and the transcriptomes were analyzed after exposing reconstituted human nasal epithelial tissues to pollen collected from grasses (timothy and meadow foxtail) gro

Assessing the climate impact of dairy farming: Incorporation of climate modelling and food-feed competition.

Dairy production is a major source of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially non‑carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Climate impact assessments of dairy farming need to account for differences between short- and long-lived GHGs, and for the net contribution of dairy production to human food supply. Based on survey data from 48 confined dairy farms in Henan, China, we found that in the production of one kg of human-edible protein (HEP) in milk and meat, an average of 18.1 kg CO2, 1.16 kg methane (CH4) and 0.03 kg nitrous oxide (N2O) were emitted. Results from a reduced-complexity climate

Climate change and mental health: a causal pathways framework.

OBJECTIVES: Climate change will bring more frequent, long lasting and severe adverse weather events and these changes will affect mental health. We propose an explanatory framework to enhance consideration of how these effects may operate and to encourage debate about this important aspect of the health impacts of climate change. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: Climate change may affect mental health directly by exposing people to trauma. It may also affect mental health indirectly, by affecting (1) physical health (for example, extreme heat exposure causes heat exhaustion in vulnerable

Cascading Effects of the Family Context in Adolescence: Implications for Young Adult Antisocial Behavior and Intergenerational Transmission of Risk.

Inspired by the tremendous impact of Robert McMahon's career, this study evaluated an intergenerational cascade model in which young adult conduct problems may serve as a risk pathway linking generation 1 (G1) parenting and family climate in adolescence with generation 2 parenting quality and family climate with their children (G2-G3). Our sample included 396 parents (Mage = 28.3; 70% women; child Mage = 3.96, 48% girls) who have participated in the PROSPER study since they were in 6th grade. Our developmental model included a random intercept cross-lagged panel model assessing bidirectional r

Coastal dynamics and Quaternary sea-level changes shaped genomic divergence and synchronous demographic variation in endemic restinga lizards from northeastern Brazil.

The Quaternary period was marked by significant climatic and sea-level fluctuations that had a strong impact on coastal ecosystems worldwide. Sea-level changes played a key role in the formation of restinga ecosystems along the Brazilian coast. These Quaternary sandy beach-dune deposits support unique ecosystems, characterized by their recent origin, constant environmental dynamics, and strong influence of saline, aeolian, and solar factors. The lizards Tropidurus hygomi, Glaucomastix abaetensis, and Glaucomastix itabaianensis are endemic and sympatric species found in restinga formations alon

Elevated CO2 modulates miRNA expression level differentially in Arabidopsis thaliana populations originated at different elevations of Indian West Himalayas.

Plants response towards increasing atmospheric [CO2] have predominantly been investigated in great details in context to morpho-physiology and gene regulation. While miRNAs are known to play critical roles in stress responses, the impact of elevated CO₂ on miRNA regulation especially in plant populations evolved under different climatic conditions remains unexplored. Plant populations evolved at different climatic conditions may respond differently towards specific stress. Here, we investigated the expression pattern of miRNAs in the two Indian Arabidopsis thaliana populations evolved at very
