IDENTIFICATION OF SUBPHENOTYPES OF SEPSIS-ASSOCIATED LIVER DYSFUNCTION USING CLUSTER ANALYSIS.

Objectives: We attempted to identify and validate the subphenotypes of sepsis-associated liver dysfunction (SALD) using routine clinical inf … validation cohort. We identified four subphenotypes of SALD (subphenotype α, β, γ, δ) using K-means cluster analysis in 5234 patients in derivation cohort. The baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between the phenotypes using one-way analysis of variance/Kruskal-Wallis test and the χ 2 test. Moreover, we used line charts to illustrate the t …

Cluster Analysis of Urban Acoustic Environments on Barcelona Sensor Network Data.

As cities grow in size and number of inhabitants, continuous monitoring of the environmental impact of sound sources becomes essential for the assessment of the urban acoustic environments. This requires the use of management systems that should be fed with large amounts of data captured by acoustic sensors, mostly remote nodes that belong to a wireless acoustic sensor network. These systems help city managers to conduct data-driven analysis and propose action plans in different areas of the city, for instance, to reduce citizens' exposure to noise. In this paper, unsupervised learning techniq

Family COVID-19 cluster analysis of an infant without respiratory symptoms.

Diagnosing cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with only non-respiratory symptoms has been challenging. We reported the diagnosis of a child who tested positive for COVID-19 with abdominal pain/diarrhea and tracked his family cluster. One member of the family tested positive for COVID-19 on real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction assay and three other family members had anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Multiview Cluster Analysis Identifies Variable Corticosteroid Response Phenotypes in Severe Asthma.

Rationale: Corticosteroids (CSs) are the most effective asthma therapy, but responses are heterogeneous and systemic CSs lead to long-term side effects. Therefore, an improved understanding of the contributing factors in CS responses could enhance precision management. Although several factors have been associated with CS responsiveness, no integrated/cluster approach has yet been undertaken to identify differential CS responses. Objectives: To identify asthma subphenotypes with differential responses to CS treatment using an unsupervised multiview learning approach. Methods: Multiple-kernel k

Multi-View Cluster Analysis with Incomplete Data to Understand Treatment Effects.

Multi-view cluster analysis, as a popular granular computing method, aims to partition sample subjects into consistent clusters across different views in which the subjects are characterized. Frequently, data entries can be missing from some of the views. The latest multi-view co-clustering methods cannot effectively deal with incomplete data, especially when there are mixed patterns of missing values. We propose an enhanced formulation for a family of multi-view co-clustering methods to cope with the missing data problem by introducing an indicator matrix whose elements indicate which data en…

Periorbital melasma: Hierarchical cluster analysis of clinical features in Asian patients.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown melasma lesions to be distributed across the face in centrofacial, malar, and mandibular patterns. Meanwhile, however, melasma lesions of the periorbital area have yet to be thoroughly described. METHODS: We analyzed normal and ultraviolet light-exposed photographs of patients with melasma. The periorbital melasma lesions were measured according to anatomical reference points and a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. RESULTS: The periorbital melasma lesions showed clinical features of fine and homogenous melasma pigmentation, involving both the upper a…

Semiparametric Bayesian analysis of accelerated failure time models with cluster structures.

In this paper, we develop a Bayesian semiparametric accelerated failure time model for survival data with cluster structures. Our model allows distributional heterogeneity across clusters and accommodates their relationships through a density ratio approach. Moreover, a nonparametric mixture of Dirichlet processes prior is placed on the baseline distribution to yield full distributional flexibility. We illustrate through simulations that our model can greatly improve estimation accuracy by effectively pooling information from multiple clusters, while taking into account the heterogeneity in th

Cardiovascular reactivity patterns and pathways to hypertension: a multivariate cluster analysis.

Substantial evidence links exaggerated mental stress induced blood pressure reactivity to future hypertension, but the results for heart rate reactivity are less clear. For this reason multivariate cluster analysis was carried out to examine the relationship between heart rate and blood pressure reactivity patterns and hypertension in a large prospective cohort (age range 55-60 years). Four clusters emerged with statistically different systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate reactivity patterns. Cluster 1 was characterised by a relatively exaggerated blood pressure and heart rate …

Identification and characterization of near-fatal asthma phenotypes by cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Near-fatal asthma (NFA) is a heterogeneous clinical entity and several profiles of patients have been described according to different clinical, pathophysiological and histological features. However, there are no previous studies that identify in a unbiased way--using statistical methods such as clusters analysis--different phenotypes of NFA. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify and to characterize phenotypes of near fatal asthma using a cluster analysis. METHODS: Over a period of 2 years, 33 Spanish hospitals enrolled 179 asthmatics admitted for an episode of N…

The different clinical faces of obstructive sleep apnoea: a cluster analysis.

Although commonly observed in clinical practice, the heterogeneity of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) clinical presentation has not been formally characterised. This study was the first to apply cluster analysis to identify subtypes of patients with OSA who experience distinct combinations of symptoms and comorbidities. An analysis of baseline data from the Icelandic Sleep Apnoea Cohort (822 patients with newly diagnosed moderate-to-severe OSA) was performed. Three distinct clusters were identified. They were classified as the "disturbed sleep group" (cluster 1), "minimally symptomatic group" (…

Developing appropriate methods for cost-effectiveness analysis of cluster randomized trials.

AIM: Cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) may use data from cluster randomized trials (CRTs), where the unit of randomization is the cluster, not the individual. However, most studies use analytical methods that ignore clustering. This article compares alternative statistical methods for accommodating clustering in CEAs of CRTs. METHODS: Our simulation study compared the performance of statistical methods for CEAs of CRTs with 2 treatment arms. The study considered a method that ignored clustering--seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) without a robust standard error (SE)--and 4 methods that rec

Molecular reclassification of Crohn's disease by cluster analysis of genetic variants.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's Disease (CD) has a heterogeneous presentation, and is typically classified according to extent and location of disease. The genetic susceptibility to CD is well known and genome-wide association scans (GWAS) and meta-analysis thereof have identified over 30 susceptibility loci. Except for the association between ileal CD and NOD2 mutations, efforts in trying to link CD genetics to clinical subphenotypes have not been very successful. We hypothesized that the large number of confirmed genetic variants enables (better) classification of CD patients. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FIN

Fourier transform infrared spectromicroscopy and hierarchical cluster analysis of human meningiomas.

Limitations of conventional light microscopy in pathological diagnosis of brain tumors include subjective bias in interpretation and discordance of nomenclature. A study using mid-infrared (IR) spectromicroscopy was undertaken to determine whether meningiomas, a group of brain tumors prone to recurrence, could be identified by the unique spectral 'fingerprints' of their chemical composition. Paired, thin (5-microm) cryosections of snap-frozen human meningioma tumor samples removed at elective surgery were mounted on glass (hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue section) and infrared (unstained t

Study of prognosis in acute myeloid leukemias (AML) by cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cluster analysis is particularly effective in detecting homogeneous subgroups among large series of observations. We applied this relatively uncommon approach to the study of prognosis in 137 patients affected by acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS AND RESULTS: Employing simple presentation parameters (age, WBC, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly) we used cluster analysis to define 3 groups with different overall survival (p = 0.0019). This classification was obtained following a rescaling of the variables and principal component analysis. Validation was performed through random definit…

Analysis of an inversion within the human beta globin gene cluster.

We have cloned and sequenced the DNA from two regions of the defective beta-globin gene cluster from a patient with Indian A gamma delta beta thalassaemia, and confirmed the complex and unusual pattern of rearrangement involving two separate deletions (0.8 kb and 7.5 kb) the inversion of the 15.5 kb segment separating them, as previously proposed from gene mapping studies [1]. All four breakpoints occur within the transcribed region of the globin genes and at one junction are found six nucleotides of unknown origin. This unique rearrangement results in enhanced expression of the upstream fetal
