A dismantling study of comprehensive cognitive remediation for improving employment outcomes: what is the role of computer cognitive training?

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive cognitive remediation improves cognitive and functional outcomes in people with serious mental illness, but the specific components required for effective programs are uncertain. The most common methods to improve cognition are facilitated computerized cognitive training with coaching and teaching cognitive self-management strategies. We compared these methods by dismantling the Thinking Skills for Work program, a comprehensive, validated cognitive remediation program that incorporates both strategies. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial we assigned 203 unemplo

The Effect of Smartphone-Based Cognitive Training on the Functional/Cognitive Markers of Schizophrenia: A One-Year Randomized Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is associated with long-term disability that results in the deterioration of both the social and professional status of individuals with schizophrenia. The impact of antipsychotic therapy on cognitive function is insufficient. Cognitive training is therefore proposed as a tool for cognitive rehabilitation in schizophrenia. In this study we investigated the effect of self-administered cognitive training using a smartphone-based application on the cognitive function of paranoid schizophrenia patients focusing on response time, correct answer rate, incorrect answe

Dissociable neural mechanisms of cognitive enhancement through transcranial stimulation and behavioral training.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and adaptive working memory (WM) training are promising cognitive enhancement approaches; however, their neural mechanisms and potential synergies remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We directly compared how tDCS and WM training modulate neural oscillations during WM performance and examined whether combining both interventions produces additive effects. METHODS: We randomized 112 healthy adults into four groups: control (sham tDCS + non-adaptive 1-back), tDCS-only (active tDCS + non-adaptive 1-back), training-only (sham tDCS + adap

Exercise training mitigates age-related cognitive decline by attenuating TMAO-induced inflammation.

The metabolites produced by the gut microbiota play a role in age-related cognitive decline through the gut-brain axis. Within this axis, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) permeates the intestinal epithelial barrier and enters systemic circulation, triggering inflammation in the central nervous system and ultimately leading to cognitive decline. However, it remains unclear whether exercise training's specific mechanism for delaying age-related cognitive decline is associated with TMAO regulation and inhibition of neuroinflammation. The aging rat model was established by intraperitoneal injection o

Resistance training and subcortical vascular cognitive impairment: A 12-month randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: It is unknown whether progressive resistance training (PRT) improves cognitive function in adults with cerebral small vessel disease and mild cognitive impairment (i.e., subcortical vascular cognitive impairment [SVCI]). METHODS: We conducted a 12-month randomized trial comparing PRT versus balance and tone exercises (BAT) on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Cognitive Plus (ADAS-Cog-Plus). RESULTS: Ninety-one participants were randomized (PRT = 45; BAT = 46); 76 completed the trial. Adherence was not different between groups (p = 0.18). At 12 months, PRT significantly i

Long-term basketball training shapes cerebellar-frontal integration for enhanced cognitive control.

BACKGROUND: In competitive sports, elite athletes demonstrate exceptional proficiency in resolving sensorimotor conflicts, exemplified by the basketball head-fake phenomenon. Whether long-term basketball training leads to adaptive cognitive control in athletes and the underlying neural mechanisms is still unclear. METHODS: Using a spatial conflict task called Swimmy and functional magnetic resonance imaging, this study investigated the brain function of 50 basketball athletes and 55 gender- and age-matched healthy controls during the Swimmy tasks. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that basketball

Cognitive training modifies frequency EEG bands and neuropsychological measures in Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome (RS) is a childhood neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a primary disturbance in neuronal development. Neurological abnormalities in RS are reflected in several behavioral and cognitive impairments such as stereotypies, loss of speech and hand skills, gait apraxia, irregular breathing with hyperventilation while awake, and frequent seizures. Cognitive training can enhance both neuropsychological and neurophysiological parameters. The aim of this study was to investigate whether behaviors and brain activity were modified by training in RS. The modifications were assessed

Cognitive training for improving executive function in chemotherapy-treated breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: A majority of breast cancer (BC) survivors, particularly those treated with chemotherapy, experience long-term cognitive deficits that significantly reduce quality of life. Among the cognitive domains most commonly affected include executive functions (EF), such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, multitasking, planning, and attention. Previous studies in other populations have shown that cognitive training, a behavioral method for treating cognitive deficits, can result in significant improvements in a number of cognitive skills, including EF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this

The effectiveness of a training for patients with unexplained physical symptoms: protocol of a cognitive behavioral group training and randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In primary care, up to 74% of physical symptoms is classified as unexplained. These symptoms can cause high levels of distress and healthcare utilization. Cognitive behavioral therapy has shown to be effective, but does not seem to be attractive to patients. An exception herein is a therapy based on the consequences model, which distinguishes itself by its labeling of psychosocial distress in terms of consequences rather than as causes of physical symptoms. In secondary care, 81% of the patients accepts this therapy, but in primary care the outcome is poor. We assume that positive
