A case of perforation of a congenital sigmoid diverticulum producing diffuse peritonitis in a 4-year-old boy is presented. Physical examination showed an acute abdomen despite a normal computed tomography study. Successful surgical treatment was achieved by excision of the diverticulum, adjacent bowel, and an end-to-end anastomosis.

This retrospective descriptive study of Sigmoid colon perforation by ingested Sandorica seed in patients who were admitted to Prachomklao Hospital from 1996 to 2000. Nine cases were included in this study. Most cases were elderly with a mean age of 65 years (range 52-78 years). The main symptoms were abdominal pain with generalized peritonitis and severe tenderness at the suprapubic area, ileus and persistent vomiting. In all cases, the diagnosis was made at operation, with removal of the Sandorica seed, closure of the perforation at the rectosigmoid colon with simple suture and proximal trans

The purpose of this communication is to present a method that assesses the sigmoid colon (SC) volume, pressure and compliance both quantitatively and qualitatively. The response of the SC pressure to SC distension was recorded in 12 healthy volunteers. The SC was distended by means of a condom, which was applied to an 8 F tube and inflated with carbon dioxide at a rate of 150 ml/min. The SC pressure was measured by a saline-perfused 8 F tube and the intra-abdominal pressure by a catheter placed in the urinary bladder. A curve called 'sigmoidometrogram' could be recorded and assessed qualitativ

Metastases to the uterus from extragenital cancers are significantly rarer than metastases to the ovaries. Of the approximately 200 cases of metastases to the uterus from extragenital cancers that have been reported in the literature, more than half are cases of metastases from breast carcinoma and only 16 are cases of metastases from colorectal carcinoma. A case of isolated metastases restricted to the myometrium of the right uterine comu from sigmoid colon carcinoma, without involvement of the ovaries, is described. The patient who six months previously had surgery for sigmoid colon carcinom

Atheroemboli-associated inflammatory type polyps localized to a portion of the sigmoid colon occurred in a 68-year-old diabetic man presenting with a 2-year history of bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. The patient underwent segmental resection of the sigmoid colon. The specimen contained 15 polyps ranging from 0.3 to 1.9 cm in greatest dimension, localized to an 8-cm length of sigmoid colon. The polyps had an edematous submucosa with a superficially ulcerated mucosa. Microscopically, arterioles within the submucosa of the polyps contained organized atheroemboli. The overlying mucosa was larg

The study discusses the experience of treatment of 207 patients with locally-advanced cancer of the sigmoid colon who made up 13.5% of the total number of cases of cancer of this site seen in the clinic in 1972-1990. Radical surgery was performed in 170 (82.1%) patients. Postoperative lethality rate was 5.8%, five-year survival rate--70.5 +/- 5.6%. The use of adjuvant preoperative radiotherapy assured a higher resection rate and had no adverse effect on immediate results.

Smooth muscle neoplasms may occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, but are rare in hindgut derivatives. We report a case of colonic leiomyoma which had undergone cystic degeneration and presented as a huge abdominal mass. The diagnosis was aided preoperatively by C.T. scanning and the cyst shown subsequently to contain 13 litres of fluid. We believe this could be the largest reported cyst of this type.

A granular cell myoblastoma of the upper sigmoid colon is reported in a 53-year-old male. The tumor was detected during investigation of abdominal pain and was removed by colonoscopic polypectomy. Colonoscopy provides a new method of treatment for these unusual colonic lesions and avoids the need for surgery. To our knowledge the tumor has not been reported previously in the sigmoid colon.

We describe a case of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) with sigmoid colon stricture. The patient, a woman in her 30 s, had a 12-year history of ileocolitis-type Crohn's disease. The colonoscope could not pass because of the sigmoid colon stricture, and the patient was referred to our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and fever. At 2-month postreferral, the patient presented with severe abdominal pain and fever. Computed tomography and intestinal ultrasonography revealed no bowel obstruction, whereas wall thickening was observed in the sigmoid colon and small bowel. Our medical inter

Complete mesocolic excision in radical colorectal cancer surgery enhances both surgical quality and the accuracy of pathological staging. In the context of sigmoid colon cancer, the optimal extent of lymphadenectomy and the appropriate level of vascular ligation remain controversial. High ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery may facilitate more thorough lymph node dissection and allow for tension-free anastomosis. However, it requires a comprehensive assessment of postoperative complication risks and the preservation of organ function. Para-aortic lymph node dissection has shown potentia

Ovarian cysts are usually asymptomatic and self-resolvable, but large cysts can increase the risk of ovarian torsion or rupture and may be indicated for surgical intervention. We present the case of a large left ovarian cyst in which laparoscopic left salpingo-oophorectomy was challenged by an overlying sigmoid colon with dense adhesions. A 47-year-old female patient presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. Ultrasound and computed tomography scans found a large left ovarian cyst and multiple small right ovarian cysts. Due to the size of the left ov

BACKROUND: The association of rectal prolapse and colorectal cancer is quite rare and only a few cases have been reported previously in the literature. It is unclear whether colorectal cancer triggers rectal prolapse.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old male patient presented to our emergency department with complete rectal prolapse, and an anterior resection was performed after rectal digital examination revealed a mass. The pathology result came back as mucinous adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon and the postoperative period was uneventful.
CONCLUSIONS: Considering the age group in which rec
