Causes and trends of adult mortality in southern Ethiopia: an eight-year follow up database study.

BACKGROUND: Broad and specific causes of adult mortalities are often neglected indicators of wellbeing in low-income countries like Ethiopia due to lack of strong vital statistics. Thus, this database study aimed to assess the causes of adult mortality using demographic surveillance data. METHODS: An 8-year (12 September 2009-11 September 2017) surveillance data from the Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance Site was used for this study. Verbal autopsy methods and ICD codes were used to identify the causes of the adult deaths. The collected data were entered to the database by data c

The Development of Surveillance Systems.

Surveillance systems in public health practice have increased in number and sophistication with advances in data collection, analysis, and communication. When the Communicable Disease Center (now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) was founded some 70 years ago, surveillance referred to the close observation of individuals with suspected smallpox, plague, or cholera. Alexander Langmuir, head of the Epidemiology Branch, redefined surveillance as the epidemiology-based critical factor in infectious disease control. I joined Langmuir as assistant chief in 1955 and was appointed chief

Economic value of pre-travel health interventions for communicable diseases in international travellers.

BACKGROUND: Pre-travel health interventions can reduce the acquisition of communicable diseases and decrease the risk of transmission during or after international travel. We sought to inform policy and research priorities with a scoping literature review of studies that assess the cost-effectiveness of pre-travel interventions. METHODS: We assessed 44 economic evaluation studies published from 1946-2023, regarding pre-travel prevention of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza, malaria, rabies, travellers' diarrhoea, cholera, polio, typhoid fever, measles, and Japanese encephalitis. RESULTS: P

The revised international health regulations and their relevance to travel medicine.

The revised International Health Regulations 2005 (IHR 2005) will enter into force in June 2007. Here we give an overview of the IHR (2005) and their relevance to the travel medicine practitioner. The two specific applications of the IHR (2005) most likely to be encountered by travelers are the disinsection of aircraft to prevent importation of disease vectors and the yellow fever vaccination requirements imposed by certain countries. A model of the revised international certificate of vaccination or prophylaxis will be shown. The IHR (2005) has moved away from the definition of fixed maximum

[Methods for diminishing mortality from infectious diseases].

The paper reports analysis of the "Russian Cross" demographic phenomenon characteristic of the present-day Russia, that is a marked excess of mortality over the birth rate leading to the reduction of the country's population at a rate of 750-800 thou people per year. The main causes and factors of excess mortality are considered with reference to deaths from infectious (viral and microbial) diseases. Experts of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences proposed the working concept of the research program "Avoidable population mortality from infectious diseases in 2010-2020". Its implementation e

[Pilgimage and other mass gatherings: epidemiology and prevention].

Hajj is the typical example of a mass gathering. Pilgrims should receive appropriate counselling. Following the late 20th century epidemics, meningococcal ACWY vaccination is obligatory for Saudi Arabia. Respiratory illnesses are frequent and influenza vaccination recommended. Elderly and ill travellers should be aware of the physical constrains during the pilgrimage and the risk of trauma. No epidemic was detected during big sports events, but surveillance is warranted and recommendations need to take local factors into account. Epidemics of influenza and norovirus infections are frequently r

[Changes in the epidemiology of infectious diseases in Chile from 1990 to 2000].

In the last decade in Chile, there was a large reduction in the rate of communicable diseases, especially typhoid fever, and those preventable through the universal vaccination programs. Exceptions were hepatitis A and Pertussis. The reduction in tuberculosis, has lead the country to a threshold in which the elimination of tuberculosis as a public health problem is reachable. The HIV epidemic is still expanding, at higher rate among women and heterosexual men, keeping drug addiction as a low ranked risk factor. At the end of the century, universal or expanded access to HIV therapy was still no

The neglected.

The dividing line between non-communicable and communicable disease is quite blurred. This has been explained through an analogy between neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and spatial neglect. The electronic databases such as MEDLINE, Tropical Diseases Research Division at the WHO and Google Scholar were consulted and reference lists of articles were searched for relevant material. Spatial neglect is a common complication following stroke. Both NTDs and spatial neglect demonstrate a preference for space and pose challenges in control and management. Although they may appear to be different ent

Transport and Management of Patients With Confirmed or Suspected Ebola Virus Disease.

The foundation of safe care for patients with confirmed or suspected Ebola virus disease is effective infection control practice, which requires implementation of appropriate administrative policies, work practices, and environmental controls, accompanied by focused education, training, and supervision. In 2002, Emory University partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop a capability for the evaluation and management of individuals with serious communicable disease. In 2005, the University of Nebraska developed a similar isolation capability. In each case, the hos

The double burden of disease among mining workers in Papua, Indonesia: at the crossroads between Old and New health paradigms.

BACKGROUND: As the global shift toward non-communicable diseases overlaps with the unfinished agenda of confronting infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries, epidemiological links across both burdens must be recognized. This study examined the non-communicable disease-infectious disease overlap in the specific comorbidity rates for key diseases in an occupational cohort in Papua, Indonesia. METHODS: Diagnosed cases of ischaemic heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes (types 1 and 2), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, cancer, HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, and ma

Understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic response on GI infection surveillance trends in England, January 2020-April 2022.

Stepwise non-pharmaceutical interventions and health system changes implemented as part of the COVID-19 response have had implications on the incidence, diagnosis, and reporting of other communicable diseases. Here, we established the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak response on gastrointestinal (GI) infection trends using routinely collected surveillance data from six national English laboratory, outbreak, and syndromic surveillance systems using key dates of governmental policy to assign phases for comparison between pandemic and historic data. Following decreases across all indicators during
