Individuals with Intellectual disabilities and augmentative and alternative communication: Analysis of survey data on uptake of aided AAC, and loneliness experiences.

This study describes uptake of augmentative and alternative communication systems by adults with intellectual disabilities; their ability to self-report at interview; differences in self-reported loneliness experiences by communication mode; and predictors of loneliness. We analyzed National Core Indicators data from 26 US states involving over 13,000 service users grouped by primary means of expression: natural speech, gestures/body language, manual signs, or communication aid/device (aided AAC). Uptake of aided AAC was low; only 0.8% of participants used aided AAC as their primary means of e

Programing AAC just-in-time for beginning communicators: the process.

Individuals who have limited or no speech as a result of intellectual and developmental disabilities and who are beginning communicators (i.e., are learning early linguistic skills such as first words and early semantic relations) require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to build both their expressive communication and their internal language structures. Programing AAC just-in-time is a promising clinical approach to intervention for beginning communicators because of its alignment with early language development theory. Early research efforts also provide emerging evidence to

The effect of Smart-Glove exchange-based system vs. PECS® on communication initiation in minimally verbal toddlers with autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) show low engagement and priority of video over other activities. The Smart-Glove system is an augmentative and alternative communication tool combining video visual scene display (VVSD) with a picture exchange-based approach. This study compares the effectiveness of integrating Smart-Glove during PECS® phase 1 instructional strategy to teach independent initiation in minimally verbal toddlers with ASD. Four participants who failed to master PECS® Phase 1 over eight months at a specialized daycare were included. An alternating treatment design eva

Neural Point-and-Click Communication by a Person With Incomplete Locked-In Syndrome.

A goal of brain-computer interface research is to develop fast and reliable means of communication for individuals with paralysis and anarthria. We evaluated the ability of an individual with incomplete locked-in syndrome enrolled in the BrainGate Neural Interface System pilot clinical trial to communicate using neural point-and-click control. A general-purpose interface was developed to provide control of a computer cursor in tandem with one of two on-screen virtual keyboards. The novel BrainGate Radial Keyboard was compared to a standard QWERTY keyboard in a balanced copy-spelling task. The

AI enabled sign language recognition and VR space bidirectional communication using triboelectric smart glove.

Sign language recognition, especially the sentence recognition, is of great significance for lowering the communication barrier between the hearing/speech impaired and the non-signers. The general glove solutions, which are employed to detect motions of our dexterous hands, only achieve recognizing discrete single gestures (i.e., numbers, letters, or words) instead of sentences, far from satisfying the meet of the signers' daily communication. Here, we propose an artificial intelligence enabled sign language recognition and communication system comprising sensing gloves, deep learning block, a

Speech-to-text intervention to support text production among students with writing difficulties: a single-case study in nordic countries.

Studies report that speech-to-text applications (STT) may support students with writing difficulties in text production. However, existing research is sparse, shows mixed results, and lacks information on STT interventions and their applicability in schools. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether a systematic and intensive assistive technology intervention focusing on STT can improve text production. A modified multiple-baseline across-subject design was used involving eight middle school students, four Norwegian and four Swedish. Their STT-produced narrative texts were collected d

A socio-emotional analysis of technology use by people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) is often thought to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and is considered an important aspect of digital inclusion. However, inclusion practices often fail to address societal inequalities that lead to and sustain exclusion. The aim of this research was to enhance understandings of the relationships people with ID form with technology by critically analysing the underlying assumptions of inclusion practices. METHOD: We employed a post-qualitative approach to reanalyse previously collected data

Efficacy and social validity of intervention using speech generating device and tactile symbols to develop communication and language in a child with visual impairment and additional disability.

Visual impairment (VI) can significantly hinder language development in children. While VI alone may not drastically alter the trajectory of language acquisition, the presence of additional disabilities can pose significant challenges. Despite these difficulties, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies, such as speech-generating devices (SGDs) and tactile symbols, have shown promise in supporting communication and language development in such children. This study investigated the efficacy of a targeted AAC intervention utilizing an SGD and individualized tactile symbols to

Non-invasive brain-computer interface system: towards its application as assistive technology.

The quality of life of people suffering from severe motor disabilities can benefit from the use of current assistive technology capable of ameliorating communication, house-environment management and mobility, according to the user's residual motor abilities. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are systems that can translate brain activity into signals that control external devices. Thus they can represent the only technology for severely paralyzed patients to increase or maintain their communication and control options. Here we report on a pilot study in which a system was implemented and valida

Aided Enhanced milieu teaching to develop symbolic and social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Children who lack functional spoken language are candidates for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Aided AAC and naturalistic interventions offer the potential to extend the communication functions demonstrated by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who are nonspeaking. Related intervention research, however, has been limited, in that interventions have generally targeted a limited range of communication functions taught in highly structured, decontextualized environments. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of an intervention that combined aided AAC w

Testing an AAC system that transforms pictograms into natural language with persons with cerebral palsy.

In this article, we describe a compansion system that transforms the telegraphic language that comes from the use of pictogram-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) into natural language. The system was tested with four participants with severe cerebral palsy and ranging degrees of linguistic competence and intellectual disabilities. Participants had used pictogram-based AAC at least for the past 30 years each and presented a stable linguistic profile. During tests, which consisted of a total of 40 sessions, participants were able to learn new linguistic skills, such as the us

A validated case study of facilitated communication.

The case of a 13-year-old boy with autism, severe mental retardation, and a seizure disorder who was able to demonstrate valid facilitated communication was described. In three independent trials, short stories were presented to him, followed by validation test procedures with an uninformed facilitator providing physical support to the subject's arm. In Trials 1 and 3, several specific answers were provided that clearly indicated that the young man, not the uninformed facilitator, was the source of the information. Moreover, some responses seemed to imply that the subject was employing simple

AAC barriers and facilitators for children with Koolen de Vries syndrome and childhood apraxia of speech: parent perceptions.

Despite the potential positive impact of augmentative and alternative communication, the literature suggests that many individuals with disabilities experience barriers in developing communication skills and access to appropriate supports. Parents can provide valuable insight into the barriers and facilitators experienced by their children with complex communication needs. Previous studies exploring parent perspectives of the complex communication needs of children with various disabilities have revealed similarities and differences in experiences. This supports the need to examine the barrier
