User Adaptive Text Predictor for Mentally Disabled Huntington's Patients.

This paper describes in detail the design of the specialized text predictor for patients with Huntington's disease. The main aim of the specialized text predictor is to improve the text input rate by limiting the phrases that the user can type in. We show that such specialized predictor can significantly improve text input rate compared to a standard general purpose text predictor. Specialized text predictor, however, makes it more difficult for the user to express his own ideas. We further improved the text predictor by using the sematic database to extract synonym, hypernym, and hyponym term

Giving new life to an outdated spectrofluorometer for static and time-resolved UCNP optical characterization.

The obsolescence of proprietary, closed-source software and electronics renders high-quality scientific equipment inoperable, particularly affecting low-income countries where replacement costs hinder research and student training. Institutions often prioritize renewing equipment that addresses the needs of a larger user base, thereby limiting the emergence of research lines, such as up-conversion studies, that require more specific equipment. Refurbishing older equipment with open-source solutions offers a cost-effective way to extend its lifespan while introducing new functionalities. In thi

Segmentation of the placenta and its vascular tree in Doppler ultrasound for fetal surgery planning.

PURPOSE: Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a serious condition that occurs in about 10-15% of monochorionic twin pregnancies. In most instances, the blood flow is unevenly distributed throughout the placenta anastomoses leading to the death of both fetuses if no surgical procedure is performed. Fetoscopic laser coagulation is the optimal therapy to considerably improve co-twin prognosis by clogging the abnormal anastomoses. Notwithstanding progress in recent years, TTTS surgery is highly risky. Computer-assisted planning of the intervention can thus improve the outcome. METHODS: In

Meeting the challenge of continuing education with eLearning.

For many of us, the concept of "e" anything invokes a sense of skepticism and even dread. However, the Web and all it has to offer is certainly an integral part of modern life and, once reconciled, offers great opportunities for commerce and knowledge building. One particular area of promise is that of online learning or "eLearning" as it is referred to in the literature. Particularly for sonographers and technologists, the ability to travel to seminars and conferences on hospital budgets and time is a distant memory. Conversely, the pressure to stay current with CE requirements is greater tha

On-Device Deep Personalization for Robust Activity Data Collection.

One of the biggest challenges of activity data collection is the need to rely on users and keep them engaged to continually provide labels. Recent breakthroughs in mobile platforms have proven effective in bringing deep neural networks powered intelligence into mobile devices. This study proposes a novel on-device personalization for data labeling for an activity recognition system using mobile sensing. The key idea behind this system is that estimated activities personalized for a specific individual user can be used as feedback to motivate user contribution and improve data labeling quality.

Change in brain activity through virtual reality-based brain-machine communication in a chronic tetraplegic subject with muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: For severely paralyzed people, a brain-computer interface (BCI) provides a way of re-establishing communication. Although subjects with muscular dystrophy (MD) appear to be potential BCI users, the actual long-term effects of BCI use on brain activities in MD subjects have yet to be clarified. To investigate these effects, we followed BCI use by a chronic tetraplegic subject with MD over 5 months. The topographic changes in an electroencephalogram (EEG) after long-term use of the virtual reality (VR)-based BCI were also assessed. Our originally developed BCI system was used to clas

Speech enhancement based on neural networks improves speech intelligibility in noise for cochlear implant users.

Speech understanding in noisy environments is still one of the major challenges for cochlear implant (CI) users in everyday life. We evaluated a speech enhancement algorithm based on neural networks (NNSE) for improving speech intelligibility in noise for CI users. The algorithm decomposes the noisy speech signal into time-frequency units, extracts a set of auditory-inspired features and feeds them to the neural network to produce an estimation of which frequency channels contain more perceptually important information (higher signal-to-noise ratio, SNR). This estimate is used to attenuate noi

Exploring Regular Exercisers' Experiences with Readiness/Recovery Scores Produced by Wearable Devices: A Descriptive Qualitative Study.

Meta-session autoregulation, a person-adaptive exercise programming approach, is characterized by individuals' matching exercise demands specifically to their current readiness states. Some consumer wearables provide 'recovery' or 'readiness' scores, computed primarily based on heart rate variability. Despite the growing popularity of consumer wearables and interest in person-adaptive programming, limited research exists on how exercisers interact, interpret and use these scores. This study explores individuals' experiences with wearable devices and their associated readiness or recovery score

Effect of mindfulness meditation on brain-computer interface performance.

Electroencephalogram based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) enable stroke and motor neuron disease patients to communicate and control devices. Mindfulness meditation has been claimed to enhance metacognitive regulation. The current study explores whether mindfulness meditation training can thus improve the performance of BCI users. To eliminate the possibility of expectation of improvement influencing the results, we introduced a music training condition. A norming study found that both meditation and music interventions elicited clear expectations for improvement on the BCI task, with the st

The Home Health Virtual Simulation Training System Facilitates Home Hazard Identification and Mitigation Strategies.

Home healthcare workers (HHWs) are frequently exposed to occupational safety hazards when servicing clients in their homes. These hazards may take different forms, many of which could be broadly categorized as "Electric, Fire and Burn," "Environmental," or "Slip, Trip, and Lift" hazards. To address this issue, a home healthcare virtual simulation training system (HH-VSTS) was developed. Although prior studies have assessed the usability, usefulness, and desirability of the system, there was a need to determine if the knowledge gained through this training process generalizes to a real-world se

The Berlin Brain-Computer Interface: EEG-based communication without subject training.

The Berlin Brain-Computer Interface (BBCI) project develops a noninvasive BCI system whose key features are 1) the use of well-established motor competences as control paradigms, 2) high-dimensional features from 128-channel electroencephalogram (EEG), and 3) advanced machine learning techniques. As reported earlier, our experiments demonstrate that very high information transfer rates can be achieved using the readiness potential (RP) when predicting the laterality of upcoming left- versus right-hand movements in healthy subjects. A more recent study showed that the RP similarily accompanies

Electrical spinal cord stimulation promotes focal sensorimotor activation that accelerates brain-computer interface skill learning.

Injuries affecting the central nervous system may disrupt neural pathways to muscles causing motor deficits. Yet the brain exhibits sensorimotor rhythms (SMRs) during movement intents, and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can decode SMRs to control assistive devices and promote functional recovery. However, noninvasive BCIs suffer from the instability of SMRs, requiring longitudinal training for users to learn proper SMR modulation. Here, we accelerate this skill learning process by applying cervical transcutaneous electrical spinal stimulation (TESS) to inhibit the motor cortex prior to longi

Multidimensional control using a mobile-phone based brain-muscle-computer interface.

Many well-known brain-computer interfaces measure signals at the brain, and then rely on the brain's ability to learn via operant conditioning in order to control objects in the environment. In our lab, we have been developing brain-muscle-computer interfaces, which measure signals at a single muscle and then rely on the brain's ability to learn neuromuscular skills via operant conditioning. Here, we report a new mobile-phone based brain-muscle-computer interface prototype for severely paralyzed persons, based on previous results from our group showing that humans may actively create specified

SADMFR guidelines for the use of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography/ Digital Volume Tomography.

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has been introduced in 1998. This radiological imaging procedure has been provided for dentistry and is comparable to computed tomography (CT) in medicine. It is expected that CBCT will have the same success in dental diagnostic imaging as computed tomography had in medicine. Just as CT is responsible for a significant rise in radiation dose to the population from medical X-ray diagnostics, CBCT studies will be accompanied by a significant increase of the dose to our patients by dentistry. Because of the growing concern for an uncritical and consequently ra

On the Way to New Horizons: Telemedicine in Oncology.

Breathtaking insights into carcinogenesis and tumor biology have been gained mainly by recent technical advances in molecular-biological and genetic techniques. Thus, dimensions of earlier diagnosis and the development of new concepts in therapy arise, which were previously unavailable. There is no doubt that through these techniques the future role and tasks of surgical oncology will change. New indications will result, for example, in the context of prophylactic therapy of hereditary malignant disease or the removal of tissue predisposed to tumors. However, modes of therapy orientated toward

Modeling interactions with a computer representation of the upper gastrointestinal system.

Our goal is to simulate interactions with a computer model of the esophagus and the stomach, built from the Visible Human database, and reported in previous works. The optical distortion of the endoscope was simulated during navigation allowing the user a quantitative assessment of distortion when measures an injury. Another improvement to our model is the inclusion of abnormal anatomy, from two types, the first one is related to the color features of the disease and the second is a direct modification in the triangle structure of the mesh, with the goal to simulate blisters and injures in the
