Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) and mismatch negativity (MMN) in healthy children and those with attention-deficit or tourette/tic symptoms.

The study compares 5 auditory event-related potential (ERP) components (P1 to P3) after 3 tones differing in pitch and rarity, and contrasts the mismatch negativity (MMN) between them in 12 children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; mean 10.2 years of age), 12 healthy controls pairwise matched for age (controls), and 10 with Chronic Tic or Tourette Syndrome (TS). Topographic recordings were derived from 19 scalp electrodes. Four major effects are reported. (a) Shorter latencies in ADHD patients were evident as early as 100 ms. (b) Both ADHD and TS groups showed very large P2

Gender differences in preattentive processing of facial expressions: an ERP study.

To investigate gender differences in pre-attentive processing of facial expressions we recorded the expression mismatch negativity (EMMN) in the deviant-standard-reverse oddball paradigm. For female participants, sad faces elicited larger EMMN than happy faces, but this difference disappeared in the left hemisphere. For male participants, EMMN was not modulated by facial expressions, regardless of in the left or right hemispheres. While the source analysis indicated that for both genders prefrontal activations were observed for sad EMMN, more sources were involved for male than female particip

Event-related brain potentials elicited by rhyming and non-rhyming pictures differentiate subgroups of reading disabled adolescents.

Event-related brain potentials were recorded while disabled adolescent subjects read and judged whether two sequentially presented pictures had names that rhymed. Subjects with relatively good phonetic skills displayed an N400 priming effect, i.e., a significant reduction in the amplitude of the negative peak, occurring approximately 400 msec post-stimulus, for pictures with names that rhymed with preceding pictures as compared with pictures that had names that did not rhyme with the prime. No such effect was evident for subjects with relatively poor phonetic skills. This lack of an N400 primi

Complex event-related potentials (P300 and CNV) and MSLT in the assessment of excessive daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy-cataplexy.

The P300 and contingent negative variation (CNV) evoked potential (EP) paradigms were performed by 12 untreated narcoleptics and controls immediately prior to each nap of the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) in order to assess whether they might hold promise as rapid quantitative techniques to assess excessive daytime sleepiness. The Stanford Sleepiness Scale (SSS) was also completed across test days and immediately before and after both the evoked potential recordings and MSLT naps. MSLT findings confirmed shorter sleep latencies and frequent SOREMPs in narcoleptics and a strong mid-afterno…

Electroencephalographic Correlates of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

This chapter reviews EEG research in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), focusing on Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) such as the Contingent Negative Variation, N2, Error-Related Negativity, the feedback Error-Related Negativity and the Readiness Potential and their neural bases. The functional significance, utility and correlation of these ERPs with OCD symptoms will be discussed, alongside novel theories for integrating the research findings. I will consider hypotheses including goal-directed behaviour, overreliance on habits, dissociations between action and knowledge, and excessive intoler…

Deficits in sequential processing manifest in motor and linguistic tasks in a multigenerational family with childhood apraxia of speech.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a global deficit in sequential processing as candidate endophenotypein a family with familial childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Of 10 adults and 13 children in a three-generational family with speech sound disorder (SSD) consistent with CAS, 3 adults and 6 children had past or present SSD diagnoses. Two preschoolers with unremediated CAS showed a high number of sequencing errors during single-word production. Performance on tasks with high sequential processing loads differentiated between the affected and unaffected family members, whereas there were

The effect of talker and intonation variability on speech perception in noise in children with dyslexia.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors aimed to determine whether children with dyslexia (hereafter referred to as "DYS children") are more affected than children with average reading ability (hereafter referred to as "AR children") by talker and intonation variability when perceiving speech in noise. METHOD: Thirty-four DYS and 25 AR children were tested on their perception of consonants in naturally produced CV tokens in multitalker babble. Twelve CVs were presented for identification in four conditions varying in the degree of talker and intonation variability. Consonant place (/bi/-/di/) and

EEG correlation during the solving of simple and complex logical-mathematical problems.

Solving logical-mathematical word problems is a complex task that requires numerous cognitive operations, including comprehension, reasoning, and calculation. These abilities have been associated with activation of the parietal, temporal, and prefrontal cortices. It has been suggested that the reasoning involved in solving logical-mathematical problems requires the coordinated functionality of all these cortical areas. In this study was evaluated the activation and electroencephalographic (EEG) correlation of the prefrontal, temporal, and parietal regions in young men while solving logical-mat

Auditory mismatch negativity and P3a in response to duration and frequency changes in the early stages of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: A shorter duration of untreated psychosis in patients with schizophrenia results in better symptomatic and functional outcomes. Therefore, identifying biological markers in the early stages of psychosis is an important step toward early detection and intervention. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a are leading candidate biomarkers. MMN measures differ in their sensitivity to varying deviants. However, this has not been fully addressed in assessing the early stages of psychosis. In the current study, we examined MMN/P3a to duration deviant (dMMN/dP3a) and frequency deviant (fMMN/fP3a

Characterizing the morphosyntactic processing deficit and its relationship to phonology in developmental dyslexia.

This study explores the morphosyntactic processing deficit in developmental dyslexia, addressing the on-going debate on the linguistic nature of the disorder, and directly testing the hypothesis that the deficit is based on underlying processing difficulties, such as acoustic and/or phonological impairments. Short German sentences consisting of a pronoun and a verb, either correct or containing a morphosyntactic violation, were auditorily presented to 17 German-speaking adults with dyslexia, and 17 matched control participants, while an EEG was recorded. In order to investigate the interaction

Long-term neuroplasticity in spinal cord injury patients: a study on movement-related brain potentials.

Neuroplastic changes that take place in the brain after sustaining a spinal cord injury have generally been studied encompassing various post-injury time periods, sometimes ranging from just a few days to many years. Although research on the low-end of this time spectrum has established that neuroplastic changes can be detected shortly after trauma, electroencephalographic changes that take place in long-term injuries are still poorly defined. To investigate this, the present study recorded the movement-related brain potentials from 9 long suffering spinal cord injury patients (post-injury ran

Speech-feature discrimination in children with Asperger syndrome as determined with the multi-feature mismatch negativity paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Asperger syndrome, belonging to the autistic spectrum of disorders, involves deficits in social interaction and prosodic use of language but normal development of formal language abilities. Auditory processing involves both hyper- and hypoactive reactivity to acoustic changes. METHODS: Responses composed of mismatch negativity (MMN) and obligatory components were recorded for five types of deviations in syllables (vowel, vowel duration, consonant, syllable frequency, syllable intensity) with the multi-feature paradigm from 8-12-year old children with Asperger syndrome. RESULTS: Ch

Event-related potentials to pitch and rise time change in children with reading disabilities and typically reading children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether children with reading disabilities (RD) process rise time and pitch changes differently to control children as a function of the interval between two tones. METHODS: Children participated in passive oddball event-related potential (ERP) measurements using paired stimuli. Mismatch negativity (MMN), P3a and late discriminative negativity (LDN) responses to rise time and pitch changes were examined. RESULTS: Control children produced larger responses than children with RD to pitch change in the P3a component but only when th

Coherence analysis differentiates between cortical myoclonic tremor and essential tremor.

Familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy (FCMTE) is characterized by a distal kinetic tremor, infrequent epileptic attacks, and autosomal dominant inheritance. The tremor is thought to originate from the motor cortex. In our patient group, a premovement cortical spike could not be established on electroencephalogram (EEG) back-averaging. Corticomuscular and intermuscular coherence analysis can demonstrate a cortical common drive to muscles. We carried out coherence analysis of electromyography (EMG) of forearm muscles and EEG of contralateral motor cortex in 7 FCMTE patients, 8 essenti

Multimodal EEG analysis in man suggests impairment-specific changes in movement-related electric brain activity after stroke.

Movement-related slow cortical potentials and event-related desynchronization of alpha (alpha-ERD) and beta (beta-ERD) activity after self-paced voluntary triangular finger movements were studied in 13 ischaemic supratentorial stroke patients and 10 age-matched control subjects during movement preparation and actual performance. The stroke patients suffered from central arm paresis (n = 8), somatosensory deficits (n = 3) or ideomotor apraxia (n = 2). The multimodal EEG analysis suggested impairment-specific changes in the movement-related electrical activity of the brain. The readiness potenti

Impaired mismatch negativity (MMN) generation in schizophrenia as a function of stimulus deviance, probability, and interstimulus/interdeviant interval.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder associated with disturbances in perception and cognition. Event-related potentials (ERP) provide a mechanism for evaluating potential mechanisms underlying neurophysiological dysfunction in schizophrenia. Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a short-duration auditory cognitive ERP component that indexes operation of the auditory sensory ('echoic') memory system. Prior studies have demonstrated impaired MMN generation in schizophrenia along with deficits in auditory sensory memory performance. MMN is elicited in an auditory oddball paradigm in which a sequence

Treatment in early psychosis with N-acetyl-cysteine for 6months improves low-level auditory processing: Pilot study.

Sensory impairments constitute core dysfunctions in schizophrenia. In the auditory modality, impaired mismatch negativity (MMN) has been observed in chronic schizophrenia and may reflect N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) hypo-function, consistent with models of schizophrenia based on oxidative stress. Moreover, a recent study demonstrated deficits in the N100 component of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) in early psychosis patients. Previous work has shown that add-on administration of the glutathione precursor N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) improves the MMN and clinical symptoms in chronic schizophreni

Cortical excitability in chronic migraine.

A proportion of episodic migraine patients experiences a progressive increase in attack frequency leading to chronic migraine (CM). The most frequent external factor that leads to headache chronification is medication overuse. The neurobiological bases of headache chronification and of the vicious circle of medication overconsumption are not completely elucidated. More recently, the same neurophysiological methods used to study episodic migraine were applied to CM and medication-overuse headache (MOH). Studies of cortical responsivity tend overall to indicate an increase in excitability, in pa

Benefits of multi-domain feature of mismatch negativity extracted by non-negative tensor factorization from EEG collected by low-density array.

Through exploiting temporal, spectral, time-frequency representations, and spatial properties of mismatch negativity (MMN) simultaneously, this study extracts a multi-domain feature of MMN mainly using non-negative tensor factorization. In our experiment, the peak amplitude of MMN between children with reading disability and children with attention deficit was not significantly different, whereas the new feature of MMN significantly discriminated the two groups of children. This is because the feature was derived from multi-domain information with significant reduction of the heterogeneous eff
