Condom, modern contraceptive, and dual method use are associated with HIV status and relationship concurrency in a context of high mobility: A cross-sectional study of women of reproductive age in rural Kenya and Uganda, 2016.

OBJECTIVES: Mobility (international/internal migration, and localized mobility) is a key driver of the HIV epidemic. While mobility is associated with higher-risk sexual behavior in women, a possible association with condom, modern contraceptive, and dual method use among women living with HIV (WLHIV), is unknown. In addition, HIV status and sexual behaviors such as relationship concurrency may also affect condom, modern contraceptive, and dual method use. STUDY DESIGN: We surveyed sexually active women (N = 1067) aged 15 to 49 in 12 communities in Kenya and Uganda participating in a test-and

Factors Influencing Contraceptive Use Among Sexually Active U.S. Middle and High School Students, 2015 to 2019.

Objective The objective of this study is to see whether factors including the age of first sexual intercourse, sexual orientation, age at the time of survey administration, race/ethnicity, and sex affect condom and other types of contraceptive usage among United States middle and high school students. Methods We analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control's Youth Risk Behavior Surveys from the years 2015 to 2019. Students were asked questions about condom and specific type of contraceptive use (e.g. birth control pills, intrauterine device/implant, shot/patch/ring, withdrawal), age of f

Predictors of contraceptive switching and discontinuation within the first 6 months of use among Highly Effective Reversible Contraceptive Initiative Salt Lake study participants.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of women will switch or discontinue using their selected contraceptive method in the first year. Research on early switching or discontinuation provides important clinical and public health insights, although few studies have assessed associated factors, particularly among longitudinal cohorts. OBJECTIVE: The current study explores attributes associated with early contraceptive method switching or discontinuation (<6 months of initiation) among participants enrolled in the intervention cohorts of the Highly Effective Reversible Contraceptive Initiative Salt Lake Contra

Inequalities in short-acting reversible, long-acting reversible and permanent contraception use among currently married women in India.

BACKGROUND: In India, the usage of modern contraception methods among women is relatively lower in comparison to other developed economies. Even within India, there is a state-wise variation in family planning use that leads to unintended pregnancies. Significantly less evidence is available regarding the determinants of modern contraception use and the level of inequalities associated with this. Therefore, the present study has examined the level of inequalities in modern contraception use among currently married women in India. METHODS: This study used the fourth round of National Family He

The Experience and Impact of Contraceptive Stockouts Among Women, Providers and Policymakers in Two Districts of Uganda.

CONTEXT: Little is known about the impact of contraceptive stockouts on women and health care providers, or how policymakers perceive and handle such stockouts. METHODS: In May-July 2015, a qualitative study on experiences of contraceptive stockouts was conducted in two districts of Uganda. It comprised three data collection components: eight focus groups with 50 women, 24 individual in-depth interviews with family planning service providers and facility managers, and 11 in-depth interviews with district-level policymakers and decision makers. Data analysis followed the content analysis appro

Knowledge and practice of family planning in Dschang municipality, Cameroon.

This study was conducted to examine factors which influence contraception in order to ameliorate services. For 12 consecutive months, 706 consenting women on fertility control presenting at the Dschang District Hospital, Cameroon were interviewed and cervical/blood samples collected for analysis. Study respondents were aged 15-50 years (mean 33.61 +/- 6.29 years). Levonorgestrel implants (46.7%) and medroxyprogesterone injections (27.6%) were cost effective over the intrauterine copper device (9.5%), Norgestrel (7.8%), Norethisterone enanthate (6.7%), male condoms (6.4%), Progestin only pills

Couples' Preferences for "2 in 1" Multipurpose Prevention Technologies to Prevent Both HIV and Pregnancy: Results of a Discrete Choice Experiment in Uganda and Zimbabwe.

End-user input early in biomedical product development may optimize design to support high uptake and adherence. We interviewed 400 couples (800 total participants) in Uganda and Zimbabwe to assess their preferences for multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) for HIV and pregnancy prevention. Using a discrete choice experiment, couples made a series of choices between hypothetical MPTs, including oral tablets and vaginal rings, inserts, and films and completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire assessing sociodemographic and behavioral measures. Most couples preferred presented MPTs

Refugee women's experiences with contraceptive care after resettlement in high-income countries: A critical interpretive synthesis.

Refugee women often share histories of forced displacement, economic hardship, or gender-based violence and may face common barriers to reproductive health care access after resettlement in high-income countries. This Critical Interpretive Synthesis integrates the available data on contraceptive care for refugee women after resettlement. The review examined shared aspects of the refugee experience that impact women's access to high-quality contraceptive care and transcend the particularities of specific health systems or countries of origin. These include possible shifts in gendered norms and

[Contraception for the diabetic woman].

The various contraceptive methods available today are examined here: natural methods; sterilization; intrauterine devices; oral contraceptives. The analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each of them indicates that in the diabetic woman low dosages of estrogen-progestins are the most suitable for short-term contraception since they do not seem to influence diabetic control. Once the patient has completed her family, the choice of method for long-term contraception is intrauterine devices or sterilization.

Pregnancy desire and dual method contraceptive use among people living with HIV attending clinical care in Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania.

AIM: To describe factors associated with pregnancy desire and dual method use among people living with HIV in clinical care in sub-Saharan Africa. DESIGN: Sexually active HIV-positive adults were enrolled in 18 HIV clinics in Kenya, Namibia and Tanzania. Demographic, clinical and reproductive health data were captured by interview and medical record abstraction. Correlates of desiring a pregnancy within the next 6 months, and dual method use [defined as consistent condom use together with a highly effective method of contraception (hormonal, intrauterine device (IUD), permanent)], among those

New contraceptive options.

New contraceptive modalities that are being introduced into the US marketplace reflect many changes in the delivery of existing steroidal products. These products are available now not only as oral medications but also as transdermal, intravaginal, intrauterine, and implantable or injectable devices. Each of these has its own unique profile and enhances the ability of consumers to pick and choose the product that is most acceptable to them. However, development of new barrier contraceptives, particularly those that have the potential to reduce the heterosexual transmission of HIV or to reduce
