This study aims to analyze Chile's policy governing access to the emergency contraceptive pill from the perspective of Walt and Gilson's policy triangle. Its purpose is to generate evidence on relevant actors, implementation, activities, and decisions taken. Through a retrospective case study with a qualitative-analytical approach, supported by a literature review, official reports available online, and analysis of relevant documents, an empirical analysis was conducted using a qualitative-descriptive synthesis matrix based on the Policy Triangle. The analysis followed a historical structure o

BACKGROUND: Emergency contraception has been known for several decades, and dedicated products have been on the market for close to 20 years. Yet it is unclear whether women, particularly in low-resource countries, have access to this important second-chance method of contraception.
OBJECTIVES: To review relevant policies, regulations, and other factors related to access to emergency contraception worldwide.
SEARCH STRATEGY: A wide range of gray literature was reviewed, several specific studies were commissioned, and a number of online databases were searched.
MAIN RESULTS: Several positive

This study investigated the use of Primolut N tablet which contains norethisterone 5mg popularly called N-tablet by users as a pre-coital contraceptive by women in the Kumasi metropolis of Ghana. Clients who called at any of the twenty (20) selected Pharmacies in residential areas within the Kumasi metropolis demanding the drug, with or without valid prescriptions were interviewed using a guide. Of the two hundred and twenty (220) users interviewed, 94% demanded the drug for contraception and 6% for menstrual disorders. Sixty one percent of those demanding it for contraception were between the

A two-dose regimen of intravenous conjugated estrogen as a postcoital interceptive was studied retrospectively. One hundred eighteen women who presented themselves at the Louisville General Hospital emergency room with a history of involuntary intercourse received 50 mg of intravenous conjugated estrogen at the conclusion of their initial medical evaluation and a second 50-mg injection approximately 24 hours later. Three pregnancies occurred among the 92 women who were seen again 30 days or more after treatment. These women reported other episodes of unprotected intercourse in the treatment cy

Women have been using emergency contraception (EC) for decades. Population studies have not shown that increased access to EC decreases abortion rates this is likely because of inconsistent and infrequent use even when it is available. Special populations, such as adolescents, have been shown to be just as good as their adult counterparts in comprehending EC instructions, and its use does not lead to more risky sexual practices or behaviors. There is little evidence on the administration of EC to victims of sexual assault, but what is available reveals more women who are victims of sexual assa

INTRODUCTION: Emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) use is reported to have increased in several countries over time. In this multi-country population-based questionnaire study, we aimed to describe the patterns of ECP use and identify factors associated with its use.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2011-2012, women aged 18-45 years were randomly selected from national registers in Denmark, Norway and Sweden and invited to respond to questions related to lifestyle and contraceptive use. We used generalized logistic models to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) comparing women w

BACKGROUND: Emergency postcoital contraception prevents pregnancy, but it must be prescribed by a doctor and taken within 72 hours of intercourse. It has been proposed that emergency contraception be made available without a prescription. We undertook a study to learn how women might behave if given a supply of emergency contraceptive pills to keep at home.
METHODS: We assigned 553 women to be given a replaceable supply of hormonal emergency contraceptive pills to take home (the treatment group) and 530 women to use emergency contraception obtained by visiting a doctor (the control group). Th

OBJECTIVE: To estimate and compare the effectiveness of the levonorgestrel and Yuzpe regimens for hormonal emergency contraception in routine clinical practice.
METHODS: A retrospective population-based study included women who accessed emergency contraceptives for immediate use prescribed by community pharmacists in British Columbia, Canada, between December 2000 and December 2002. Linked administrative healthcare data were used to discern the timings of menses, unprotected intercourse, and any pregnancy-related health services. A panel of experts evaluated the compatibility of observed preg

OBJECTIVES: In Scotland most women get emergency contraception (EC) from pharmacies. Pharmacists currently cannot provide effective ongoing contraception after EC. In this pilot study, we aimed to determine the feasibility of a larger study designed to ascertain if pharmacy-based interventions can increase the uptake of effective contraception after EC.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a pilot study of women presenting for levonorgestrel EC to community pharmacies in Edinburgh, UK, in 2012. Pharmacies were cluster randomized to provide either standard care or one of two interventions: (a) one packet of

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess adolescent women's preferences for specific microbicide characteristics including pregnancy prevention, timing of application, potential for side effects, and whether it targeted human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or other sexually transmitted infections (STI). Potential differences in microbicide preferences by adolescent age group and behavioral patterns including engaging in sexual intercourse and use of hormonal contraception were examined, as it was hypothesized that as adolescents progress into adulthood and gain sexual experience their pr

A major barrier to the widespread acceptability and use of emergency contraception (EC) are concerns regarding the mechanisms of action of EC methods. Today, levonorgestrel (LNG) in a single dose of 1.5 mg taken within 120 h of an unprotected intercourse is the most widely used EC method worldwide. It has been demonstrated that LNG-EC acts through an effect on follicular development to delay or inhibit ovulation but has no effect once luteinizing hormone has started to increase. Thereafter, LNG-EC cannot prevent ovulation and it does not prevent fertilization or affect the human fallopian tube

OBJECTIVE: To determine long-term trends in emergency contraception (EC) management by general practitioners in Australia.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Data from April 2000 to March 2012 were drawn from the BEACH (Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health) program, a continuous cross-sectional survey of GP activity. We analysed consultations involving EC management, unwanted pregnancy management and emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) prescribing per 1000 GP encounters with women aged 14-54 years. Summary statistics were calculated with 95% confidence intervals.
RESULTS: In 2000-2001,

The efficacy of various doses of RU 486 in terminating pregnancy before and after the luteal-placental shift (LPS) in the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) was assessed through sonographic examination and measurements of steroid hormones and their metabolites. Intramuscular injection of 1.0, 2.5, 12.5, or 25.0 mg/kg was administered either from gestational day (GD) 15-18 (Group 1; N = 11) or GD 23-26 (Group 2; N = 9). The timing of treatment was determined by the detection of the preovulatory estrogen peak via daily urinary estrone conjugate (E1C) measurements. In Group 1, a 90.9% preg

BACKGROUND: Proper use of emergency contraception can reduce unintended pregnancy and the risk of abortion. Despite this fact, there is a high rate of unwanted pregnancies among adolescents in Ethiopia. Therefore, determining the level of knowledge and use of Emergency contraceptives (EC) among female youth is important.
OBJECTIVE: To assess Knowledge and use of EC methods and their associated factors among female college students in Gondar City, Northwest Ethiopia, 2023.
METHODS: Institution-based cross-sectional study was employed among 814 female college students in Gondar City from April

BACKGROUND: Unless women start effective contraception after oral emergency contraception, they remain at risk of unintended pregnancy. Most women in the UK obtain emergency contraception from community pharmacies. We hypothesised that pharmacist provision of the progestogen-only pill as a bridging interim method of contraception with emergency contraception plus an invitation to a sexual and reproductive health clinic, in which all methods of contraception are available, would result in increased subsequent use of effective contraception.
METHODS: We did a pragmatic cluster-randomised crosso

INTRODUCTION: Several selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) show promise in several areas of medicine and this work has been summarized by us in 2008.
AREAS COVERED: Since the publication of our reviews, several developments have taken place in the field of reproductive medicine. The first is emergency contraception (EC). Two SPRMs are clinically utilized today: mifepristone (MFP) and ulipristal acetate (UPA). MFP is available for EC in up to 120 h following unprotected intercourse. A dose of 10 mg is significantly more effective than levonorgestrel (LNG). In a metanalysis of the
