Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2021eng
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate outcomes following arthroscopic elbow contracture release to describe the use of arthroscopy for improvement in extension/flexion and pronation/supination arcs of motion at a single institution for degenerative and posttraumatic etiologies.
METHODS: Consecutive arthroscopic elbow arthrolysis performed between 2003 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Basic patient demographics, indications for surgery, preoperative and postoperative elbow range of motion, postoperative patient outcome score, and all complications were recorded and analy…

OBJECTIVE: To determine if children who present with an elbow flexion contracture (EFC) from brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) are more likely to develop shoulder contracture and undergo surgical treatment.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of children <2 years of age with BPBI who presented to a single children's hospital from 1993 to 2020. Age, elbow and shoulder range of motion (ROM), imaging measurements, and surgical treatment and outcome were analyzed. Patients with an EFC of ≥10° were included in the study sample. Data from 2445 clinical evaluations (1190 patients) were assessed. Th…

Dupuytren's contracture nodules, but not cords, contain myofibroblasts. These cells, which combine many electron microscopic, physiologic, and immunohistochemical characteristics of fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells, are probably the active force of contraction. Prominent myofibroblasts and intracellular microtubules correlate with increased likelihood of clinical recurrence after surgery. Tissue culture of cells derived from Dupuytren's contracture myofibroblasts show consistently slower cell replication than from fibroblasts and show persistence of electron microscopic characteristics in e…

Hemophilic contracture is seen most commonly as an equinus deformity of the ankle, or at the knee or elbow in the form of a flexion deformity. The cause is either fibrosis following intramuscular hematoma, which may be complicated by a peripheral nerve palsy causing muscle imbalance, or is associated with chronic hemophilic arthropathy following recurrent hemarthroses. The introduction of home therapy is an important preventive measure, and treatment is primarily by physiotherapy, splintage, and corrective devices. The late or severe case may require surgical correction in the form of soft tis…

In 1979 the first Negro patient with Dupuytren's Contracture who had no evidence of Caucasoid Admixture in his genetic make-up was reported on. Another five such cases are presented.

The palmar fascial ligaments have been examined by microdissection using an operating microscope in fresh and preserved cadaveric hands. The … n a series of clinical cases; nodules, skin pits, distortion of the palmar creases, cords and joint contractures, and the pathogenesis of the disease is related to the anatomy of the palmar ligaments. The disease is described as a process of contracture along anatomical pathways. A hypothesis for the development of Dupuytren's Disease is presented whereby the …
