Context of substance initiation among urban Native Americans: an exploratory retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Addiction is a significant problem among many Native American groups but has rarely been examined in urban populations. In particular, little is known about the context in which urban Native Americans first use substances. This study compares cases (people with a history of addiction) to controls (people without a history of addiction) on demographics, substance use history, context of first substance use, and polysubstance use. In addition, this appears to be the first study to overcome the lack of Native American professionals by employing and training lay community members to id

Drugs involved in Kentucky drug poisoning deaths and relation with antecedent controlled substance prescription dispensing.

BACKGROUND: The shift from prescription to illicit drugs involved in drug poisoning deaths raises questions about the current utility of prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) data to inform drug poisoning (overdose) prevention efforts. In this study, we describe relations between specific drugs involved in Kentucky drug poisoning deaths and antecedent controlled substance (CS) dispensing. METHODS: The study used linked death certificates and PDMP data for 2,248 Kentucky resident drug poisoning deaths in 2021. Death certificate literal text analysis identified drugs mentioned with involv

Objective sleep outcomes in randomized-controlled trials in persons with substance use disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Improving sleep health is an important target for substance use disorder (SUD) research. However, there is little guidance for SUD researchers regarding the use of technologies to objectively assess sleep outcomes in randomized-controlled trials (RCTs). This systematic review aimed to describe the use of technologies to objectively measure sleep outcomes in RCTs conducted in persons with SUDs, in order to inform future sleep intervention studies in SUD populations. METHODS: This study was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) on May

Evaluation of the diagnostic performance of an oral fluid screening test device for substance abuse at traffic controls.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the analytical performance of the Kite Biotechnology Oral fluid (OF) screening test device, which is used for roadside screening of cannabis, opiates, amphetamines, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), cocaine and benzodiazepines by comparing samples with matched plasma samples, analysed via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for confirmation. METHODS: OF and plasma samples were obtained simultaneously from a total of 100 subjects. OF samples were analysed by OF screening test based on immunochrom

Gestational exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances and congenital heart defects: A nested case-control pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that environmental pollutants may contribute to the occurrence of congenital heart defects (CHDs). However, no previous studies have evaluated the impact of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent environmental pollutants, on CHDs. This exploratory study aimed to generate testable hypotheses of the association between gestational PFAS and the risk of CHDs. METHODS: A nested case-control study was conducted in a cohort of 11,578 newborns. Exposure odds ratios were compared between 158 CHD cases and 158 non-malformed controls delivered at the same

Effect of a Statewide Controlled-Substance Monitoring Requirement on the Opioid Prescribing Practice for Treatment of Acute Pain.

BACKGROUND: The US government affirmed the opioid epidemic as a public health emergency in late 2017. Prior to that, as part of the Heroin, Opiate, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Agenda, the state of Wisconsin enacted 2015 Wisconsin Act 266. This law, which went into effect April 1, 2017, requires prescribers to review data from the state's enhanced Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (ePDMP) before issuing an opioid prescription, in order to reduce inappropriate prescriptions and, ultimately, decrease opioid overuse. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of 2015 Wisconsin Act 266 on opioid pr

Reducing barriers to trauma inquiry in substance use disorder treatment - a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high rate of traumatic events in clients with substance use disorders, trauma exposure often remains undetected in a majority of treatment-seeking clients. Improving health professionals' knowledge and skills in the inquiry of traumatic events is therefore of utmost importance for appropriately addressing trauma-related treatment needs. However, professionals in substance use disorder treatment settings frequently report barriers to the inquiry about traumatic events, e.g., the fear of offending or harming the client. Such barriers should be addressed by trainings that

Responding to New Psychoactive Substances in the European Union: Early Warning, Risk Assessment, and Control Measures.

New psychoactive substances (NPS) are drugs that are not controlled by the United Nations international drug control conventions of 1961 and 1971 but that may pose similar threats to public health. Many of them are traded as "legal" replacements to controlled drugs such as cannabis, heroin, benzodiazepines, cocaine, amphetamines, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). Driven by globalization, there has been a large increase in the availability and, subsequently, harms caused by these substances over the last decade in Europe. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (

Anger management and temper control: critical components of posttraumatic stress disorder and substance abuse treatment.

Recent studies have shown associations among combat experience, PTSD, anger and hostility, and involvement in violence. Clinical observations of veterans enrolled in the Substance Use/Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Team (SUPT) program at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center revealed relatively high levels of anger and aggressive behavior, including physical assaults and property damage. In response to this anger and aggressive behavior, an anger management treatment was added to the SUPT program's treatment of substance abuse and PTSD. Anger management consisted of a 12-week cognit

Digitising controlled substance accountability: implementation and use of a dashboard-based monitoring system in an university hospital.

OBJECTIVES: Opioids are the cornerstone of severe pain management but they have a strong potential for abuse. To mitigate this risk, hospitals are required to track and account for these controlled substances (CS). Despite widespread adoption of electronic medication administration records (eMAR), nurses also performed paper-based registrations for CS. We hypothesised that a validated dashboard combining dispensing and eMAR data could be implemented for CS accountability. This study describes trends in accountability of dispenses through administrations before, during and after implementation …

Virtual Reality in Prevention and Treatment of Substance-Related Disorders: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse (SA) imposes a significant global health burden, demanding innovative and accessible interventions. Virtual reality (VR) offers a promising approach, providing engaging and personalized treatment experiences. However, rigorous evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on VR's efficacy in the treatment and prevention of SA remains limited. This systematic review aimed to characterize VR interventions for substance-related disorders and evaluate their effectiveness. METHODS: To conduct this review, two researchers independently performed a comprehensive liter

Episodic memory and inhibitory control in people who inject substances results of cohort COSINUS study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive disorders associated with addictive disorders are well established in the literature for numerous substances and behaviours. Very few studies have examined the effect of polydrug use on cognitive functioning. These studies have focused on the cognitive effect of one substance among others in very small samples. They did not take into account HCV/HIV infections, which are highly prevalent among polydrug users due to frequent injections and sharing of materials and whose impact on cognition is well documented. In our study, we aim to investigate two critical cognitive funct

Suicide prevention for substance using youth experiencing homelessness: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: While research on substance using youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) is increasing, there is a dearth of information regarding effective prevention interventions for these youth. Suicide is the leading cause of death among YEH and most youth do not access services that may be available to them. Therefore, this study seeks to address this gap in the research literature with the goal to identify an effective suicide prevention intervention that can be readily adopted by communities that serve these youth. METHODS: Three hundred (N = 300) YEH with recent substance use and suicidal

Reduced rates of substance use disorder in patients with alopecia: An all of us case-control study.

Alopecia areata (AA), depression, anxiety, and decreased quality of life are highly associated in the literature. It has been noted that there is an increased risk of substance use in those with AA to help cope with the psychological burdens and perceived stigmatization. This study aims to explore the relationship between substance use disorder (SUD) and scarring/non-scarring alopecia using the All of Us database. Of the 9,385 patients with alopecia, 8.4% had SUD of any kind. Multivariable regression revealed that alopecia is a potential protective factor against SUD when controlling for other

The effectiveness of oxytocin for treating substance use disorders:A systematic review of randomized placebo-controlled trials.

Oxytocin is gaining traction in the treatment of various substance use disorders (SUD). We performed a systematic review assessing the efficacy of oxytocin for treating different SUD. The electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for randomized controlled trials examining the effects of oxytocin vs. placebo in SUD samples. Quality assessment was conducted using a Cochrane validated checklist. A total of 17 trials with unique samples were identified. These were conducted on participants with SUD involving alcohol (n = 5), opioid

Substance of choice, impact of heroin or opium on treatment retention in a multicentre randomised controlled trial in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: In the Middle East and Asia, illicit opioid use exists across a spectrum between heroin and opium. The impact of primary opioid of choice on opioid agonist treatment retention has not been well evaluated previously, especially for opium tincture, an increasingly popular form of opioid agonist treatment in Iran. This study investigates the relationship between primary opioid of choice, namely heroin or opium, and retention in opium tincture and methadone treatment. METHODS: Participants with opioid use disorder (n = 204) were randomised to receive opium tincture or methadone. All
