Costs and benefits in hunter-gatherer punishment.

Hunter-gatherer punishment involves costs and benefits to individuals and groups, but the costs do not necessarily fit with the assumptions made in models that consider punishment to be altruistic--which brings in the free-rider problem and the problem of second-order free-riders. In this commentary, I present foragers' capital punishment patterns ethnographically, in the interest of establishing whether such punishment is likely to be costly; and I suggest that in many cases abstentions from punishment that might be taken as defections by free-riders are actually caused by social-structural c

The effect of social settings and olfactory environments on spontaneous movement synchrony.

Interpersonal synchrony refers to the temporal coordination between two individuals, signaling the coupling of their behaviors. Optimal movement synchrony in dyads is linked to more affiliative behavior, cooperation, and trust. However, there is limited research on how the sensory environment impacts interpersonal synchrony. One significant environmental factor influencing human behavior and social interactions is ambient odors. This study aimed to examine the effect of ambient odor on interpersonal synchrony, particularly in-phase movement synchrony. Motion energy analysis and windowed cross-

Happy for Us not Them: Differences in neural activation in a vicarious reward task between family and strangers during adolescent development.

During adolescence social-interactions with other people become more relevant. One key aspect of these interactions is cooperative behavior. Cooperation relies on a set of cognitive and affective mechanisms. In this study, we focused on the mental ability to feel happy for another person's positive experience, called vicarious joy. We investigated the neural mechanisms of this ability using a false-choice vicarious reward fMRI task. Participants played a game where they could win monetary rewards for themselves, their mother, their father, and a stranger. A region-of-interest (ROI) analysis of…

Social gaze dynamics in teams: Comparing face-to-face and video meeting settings.

Understanding the factors that promote cooperative behavior in teams is essential for organizational success. While the role of verbal communication in fostering cooperation and team cohesion is well established, the impact of nonverbal signals, particularly eye contact and related patterns, known as social gaze dynamics, has been neglected. In this study, we conducted a multiparty eye-tracking experiment, enabling us to explore the relationship between social gaze, cooperation, and team cohesion. In particular, teams of three participants engaged in a two-stage task: a structured pre-play com…

To understand my decisions, you must understand my task: Expertise effects in theory of mind.

Human behavior is frequently constrained by the behavior of other agents (increasingly artificial agents like machines and software). In a cooperative setting, each individual needs to understand the partners' intentions and corresponding actions to plan their actions adequately. Misunderstandings have adverse effects and diminish the efficiency of cooperation. We created a game-based experiment to study the effects of understanding a partner's actions in a cooperative setting. In this game, the players depend on each other's ability to make good decisions to succeed. In two studies (N = 87, N

Relationship Between Salivary Cortisol Levels and Children's Behavior During a Dental Examination.

PURPOSE: To correlate the salivary cortisol levels in children attending a university dental clinic with their behavior during the dental appointment. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted with 43 seven- to 10-year-old children whose behavior during the dental appointment was assessed using the Frankl scale. Participants were divided into two groups: (1) cooperative children; and (2) uncooperative children. All children had four saliva samples collected as follows: prior to the dental examination (S1); shortly after the dental examination (S2); 30 minutes after waking up in the morning a

Virtual teaching and power dynamics: Implications for decolonial practices in LIC-HIC educational partnerships.

INTRODUCTION: Global collaborations, particularly those between low-income (LIC) and high-income countries (HIC), may inadvertently reproduce the very power differentials they aspire to overcome. The Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration (TAAAC) is a partnership model deliberately built to follow a relational and invited guest model of collaboration with in-person teaching visits by University of Toronto (UofT) faculty to teach within Addis Ababa University (AAU) programmes. The COVID-19 pandemic required that teaching be conducted virtually, which provided an opportunity to explore our a

U.S. radiation protection: role of national and international recommendations and opportunities for collaboration (harmony, not dissonance).

For much of the 20th century, U.S. radiation protection policies were similar to those elsewhere in the world, in large part because the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) were closely aligned. In the 1970s, several U.S. regulations were released at about the same time as the 1977 recommendations from ICRP. The regulatory development process in the United States can be lengthy with ample opportunities for public involvement. While such deliberation is essential and beneficial, the rulemaking proces

Indirect reciprocity with optional interactions.

Indirect reciprocity is a mechanism for the evolution of cooperation that is relevant for prosocial behavior among humans. Indirect reciprocity means that my behavior towards you also depends on what you have done to others. Indirect reciprocity is associated with the evolution of social intelligence and human language. Most approaches to indirect reciprocity assume obligatory interactions, but here we explore optional interactions. In any one round a game between two players is offered. A cooperator accepts a game unless the reputation of the other player indicates a defector. For a game to t

The complementary roles of conformity and Q-learning in the prisoner's dilemma with punishment.

Punishment has been demonstrated to be an effective mechanism for promoting cooperation, both theoretically and experimentally. However, most previous studies have focused on a single update rule, which fails to reflect the diversity of real societies arising from cognitive heterogeneity. Therefore, this paper investigates the evolutionary dynamics of the prisoner's dilemma with punishment by incorporating Q-learning and conformity update rules. These two rules capture two typical types of individuals commonly observed in real societies: profit-seeking explorers and conservative conformists. W

Conflict, Constraint, Cooperation, and Allocation: A Plural Evolutionary Architecture for Human Reproductive Paradoxes.

Human reproduction presents features that appear inefficient in isolation: gamete overproduction, mechanically demanding birth, neonatal altriciality, lactational suppression of fertility, reproductive cessation, prolonged post-reproductive survival, and extensive care by individuals other than parents. Evolutionary accounts increasingly explain such features through conflict among parties with divergent fitness interests. We argue that conflict loses discriminating power when the term is extended to physical limits, to cooperative interactions, and to trade-offs within a single organism, and

The Cerebellar Role in Emotions at a Turning Point: Bibliometric Analysis and Collaboration Networks.

The neural basis of emotional experience, both in neurotypical and clinical conditions, remains an open research topic. Historically, the cerebellum was considered a purely motor structure; however, studies since the mid-twentieth century and contributions like the cerebellar cognitive-affective syndrome, evidenced its role in emotion. This has led to an expansion of the paradigm, encouraging further research into the cerebellar role in emotion. Understanding this field's development is essential to assessing its current state, identifying knowledge gaps, and exploring emerging areas. This pap

The hidden costs of human cooperation.

Cooperation enables humans to reshape entire environments and build complex societies. Although often celebrated, cooperation also has hidden costs. By presenting core mechanisms behind its emergence, we demonstrate that maintaining cooperation frequently relies on social control and coercion, which can lead to extortion and discrimination. Group cooperation further necessitates defining who belongs to the group, fostering exclusion and intergroup conflict. Free-rider concerns fuel scapegoating and polarization. These downsides challenge the notion of cooperation as a simple success story. The

Willingness intensity and co-evolution of decision rationality depending on aspiration enhance cooperation in the spatial public goods game.

The Fermi rule states that rational or irrational sentiment affects individual decision-making. Existing studies have assumed that individuals' irrational sentiments and behavior willingness have fixed values and do not change with time. In reality, people's rationality sentiment and behavior willingness may be influenced by some factors. Therefore, we propose a spatial public goods game mechanism, in which individuals' rational sentiment is co-evolution synchronously depending on the difference between aspiration and payoff. Moreover, the intensity of their subjective willingness to change th

The World Rabies Day 2020: Collaborate and Vaccinate.

Rabies constantly kills 59,000 people annually, mostly in Asia and Africa. Rabies, which is responsible for 99% of human rabies cases, is totally preventable by standard vaccinations. In 2015, a global call for action was made by the World Health Organization, World Organization for Animal Health, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control to join forces toward the elimination of dog-transmitted human rabies by the year 2030. All the tools and protocols to reach that target are readily available, and the feasibility of dog rabies elimina

Cooperation and conflict in human pregnancy.

For many humans living today, obstetric care begins early in pregnancy, and most babies are born in hospitals. These are precautionary measures. Medical complications during the brief nine months of pregnancy are such a common part of human experience that we rarely ask ourselves why gestation does not always proceed as smoothly and reliably as the lifelong beating of our heart or filtration of blood by our kidneys. The birth of a healthy child is central to reproductive fitness and must have been subject to strong natural selection. Why then should placentas be less reliable organs than heart
