AIM: To estimate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound in detecting agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 1722 in utero MRI examinations. All cases were identified in which the fetus had been referred from ultrasonography with a diagnosis of ACC and those in which ACC was given as a diagnosis on the in utero MRI study. The MRI was assumed to provide the correct diagnosis of ACC and descriptive statistics of diagnostic accuracy for ultrasound were calculated.

A 45-day-old male baby presented with a leaking myelomeningocele and signs of meningitis. A computerised tomographic scan of brain revealed gross supratentorial ventriculomegaly with inflammatory exudates suggestive of intracranial infection. An unexpected association of complete agenesis of corpus callosum was discovered, however it is an incidental finding, a rare combination indeed.

We report preliminary results of a three year follow-up of ten children affected with apparently isolated corpus callosum agenesis (prenatal diagnosis). This population was collected from a multicenter prospective study: annual survey included physical examination, developmental outcome and psychometric evaluation. Febril convulsions appeared to be more frequent than in the general population; developmental outcome was normal at the last evaluation. Follow-up has to be performed up to 10 years to determine more accurately prognosis of isolated corpus callosum agenesis.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a common finding during neurosonography of preterm infants. Secondary thinning of the corpus callosum is seen following PVL, typically from loss of hemispheric white matter tracts. We report a case of direct involvement of the corpus callosum with PVL, its pathogenesis, and its potential as a cause of corpus callosal thinning.

Corpus callossal lipoma is a rare benign congenital disorder. These lesions may be associated with various congenital and acquired disorders. Lipoma of the corpus callosum with frontal encephalocele has not been described in the literature so far. We are reporting one such case and the relevant literature is reviewed.

Intracranial lipomas are rare and usually do not have clinical expression. They are located most commonly in the interhemispheric fissure and may also be found in the quadrigeminal, ambient, chiasmatic, interpeduncular, sylvian, and perimesencephalic cisterns. Interhemispheric lipomas may be associated with choroid plexus lipomas. The ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging findings are reported in a neonate with lateral ventricular choroid plexus lipomas and interhemispheric lipoma associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.
