The changes in Lemna minor metabolomic profile: A response to diclofenac incubation.

Metabolomics is an emerging approach that investigates the changes in the metabolome profile. In the present study, Lemna minor -considered as an experimental aquatic plant model- was incubated with 10 and 100 μM diclofenac (DCF) for 96 h, respectively. Knowing that DCF is internationally often problematic in wastewater effluents and that it might affect particularly the metabolic profiles in aquatic plants, mainly the oxidoreductase, dehydrogenase, peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activities, here it was hypothesized (H) that in the common duckweed, DCF might increase the phenolic and fl

Composition and Bioactivity of Lipophilic Metabolites from Needles and Twigs of Korean and Siberian Pines (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. and Pinus sibirica Du Tour).

Lipophilic extractive metabolites in different parts of the shoot system (needles and defoliated twigs) of Korean pine, Pinus koraiensis, and Siberian pine, Pinus sibirica, were studied by GC/MS. Korean pine needles comprised mainly bornyl p-coumarate, heterocyclic 15-O-functionalized labdane type acids (lambertianic acid), 10-nonacosanol, sterols and their esters. While Siberian pine needles contained less bornyl p-coumarate, lambertianic acid, sterols and their esters, but were richer in other 15-O-functionalized labdane type acids. The major components of the twig extract of P. koraiensis w

Targeting Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 for Dental Caries Prevention Using Herbal Isolates: MMP3 Inhibition by Cinnamic Acids.

Objectives: Dental caries, a prevalent infectious disease affecting teeth, ranks highest among 328 diseases, according to a 2017 Lancet study. In demineralized human dentin, matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP3) functions as a proteoglycanase, contributing to the degradation of proteoglycan components. This process exposes collagen fibrils, thereby facilitating the demineralization of the dentin matrix. Inhibiting MMP3 shows potential for preventing dental caries. Methods: The binding affinity of 20 cinnamic acid derivatives, namely cynarin, chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, cinnamyl caffeate, ph

Scope and limitations of biocatalytic carbonyl reduction with white-rot fungi.

The reductive activity of various basidiomycetous fungi towards carbonyl compounds was screened on an analytical level. Some strains displayed high reductive activities toward aromatic carbonyls and aliphatic ketones. Utilizing growing whole-cell cultures of Dichomitus albidofuscus, the reactions were up-scaled to a preparative level in an aqueous system. The reactions showed excellent selectivities and gave the respective alcohols in high yields. Carboxylic acids were also reduced to aldehydes and alcohols under the same conditions. In particular, benzoic, vanillic, ferulic, and p-coumaric ac

Exploring the Mechanism of β-Cyclodextrin-Encased Phenolic Acids Functionalized with TPP for Antioxidant Activity and Targeting.

Oxidative stress on the mitochondria in a human cell is attributed to several life-risking conditions, and as such, the importance of molecular structures packed with antioxidant properties and structural characteristics to enter the cell to help prevent such stress has been substantially relevant in recent years. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant properties of triphenylphosphonium (TPP)-conjugated phenolic acids encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). We synthesized TPP conjugates of caffeic, coumaric, and cinnamic acids and formed inclusion complexes with β-CD. Our results showed

Insights into ferulic acid detoxification mechanism by using a novel adsorbent, AEPA250: The microinteraction of ferulic acid with AEPA250 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

In this study, a novel adsorbent, Air Environment-prepared Adsorbent at 250 ℃ (AEPA250), was used to detoxify the main fermentation inhibitor (ferulic acid) present in the alkali-pretreated hydrolysate. AEPA250 reduced the effective concentration of ferulic acid by its adsorption, thereby decreasing the possible interaction of ferulic acid with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results indicated that AEPA250 functionalized with hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amino groups under acidic conditions with higher binding energies (-45.667, -27.046, and -11.008 kcal mol-1, respectively) and electronic cloud over

New series of avenanthramides in oat seed.

Avenanthramides are characteristic constituents of oat seeds. We analyzed the methanol extract of oat seeds by HPLC and detected three compounds 1, 2, and 3 eluted at retention times similar to avenanthramides. The three compounds were purified by column chromatography and HPLC. Spectroscopic analyses of 1, 2, and 3 suggested that they are amides of 4,5-dihydroxyanthranilic acid with caffeic, p-coumaric, and ferulic acids, respectively. Their identities were confirmed by comparing spectra and chromatographic behavior with compounds synthesized from 4,5-dihydroxyanthranilic acid and N-hyrdroxys

The impact of processing on the release and antioxidant capacity of ferulic acid from wheat: A systematic review.

The antioxidant capacity and bioaccessibility of ferulic acid (FA)1 in wheat are highly limited by the lack of free ferulic acid (FFA).2 However, many studies claim that wheat processing can efficiently increase FFA content and ultimately influence the overall antioxidant capacity. Hence, this systematic review investigated changes in FFA content, antioxidant capacity and bioaccessibility of wheat after different processing treatments. A literature search of two databases (PubMed and Web of Science) was undertaken covering the last 20 years, yielding 1148 articles. Studies which employed biopr
