The effect of memantine on functional recovery of the facial nerve after crush injury.

The objective of this study is to establish whether memantine is an alternative and effective treatment on facial nerve recovery after crush injury, and also to analyze the effective doses of this promising agent. This is a randomized controlled animal study. 40 rats underwent crush injury to left main trunk of the facial nerve, and divided into 4 groups; (1) control (saline treated), (2) 5-mg/kg memantine, (3) 10-mg/kg memantine, and (4) 20-mg/kg memantine group. Facial nerve functions were evaluated by eye reflex, and whisker movement compared to the unaffected side. They were scored on a 3-

Morphological and functional aspects of sciatic nerve regeneration after crush injury.

Experimental models for the investigation of nerve regeneration are critical in studying new strategies able to promote the repair process. The aim of the present work was to characterize morphological and functional aspects of sciatic nerve regeneration after mechanical crush injury in rodents. Morphological changes were assessed after a four minutes sciatic nerve injury induced by means of a standardized compression clip. Rat nerve samples were collected before injury and after 24 hours, four days, two weeks, and four weeks after injury, respectively. In an additional group with unilateral s

Muscle crush injury of extremity: quantitative elastography with supersonic shear imaging.

The aim of this study was to determine the characteristic of muscle crush injury at quantitative ultrasonographic elastography using supersonic shear imaging (SSI). Twenty-three New Zealand rabbits underwent crush injury to left hind leg caused by a special balloon cuff device. Conventional ultrasonography and SSI quantitative elastography were performed at both crushed and uncrushed regions of the left hind legs. Quantitative lesion elasticity was measured using the Young's modulus (in kilopascals) at 0.5 h, 2 h, 6 h, 24 h and 72 h after the release of the crushing pressure. Compared with tho

Effects of intrathecal administration of FK506 after sciatic nerve crush injury.

Although various administration routes of FK506 have been published, intrathecal administration of FK506 has not previously been reported in the literature. A daily dose of 0.05 mg/kg of FK506 was given (a small dose compared with those reported in the available literature). The authors used this small dose to obtain lower immunosuppression and neurotoxicity, and a higher axonal regeneration rate. A total number of 40 female Wistar rats were used and randomly divided into four groups: control, sham, FK506-treated, and vehicle-treated. Sciatic nerve regeneration was evaluated by walking track a

Axial loading with hyperflexion injury to the atlas resulting in crushed lateral masses.

A 40-year-old man was involved in an ATV accident, in which he landed on the top of his head. There was no neurological deficit. A plain radiograph showed prevertebral soft tissue swelling at the atlas and axis level. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated vertical fractures of the anterior aspects of both lateral masses of the atlas, extending to the junction of the lateral mass with the anterior arch bilaterally. There was no lateral offset of the lateral masses. The mechanism of injury is believed to be axial loading along with hyperflexion.

[Timing of soft tissue reconstruction in severe crush injury of the upper extremity].

Complex injuries of the distal forearm and the hand by industrial machines often require extensive reconstructive procedures. Crush injuries with soft tissue damage extending over the limits of visible injury require a special approach. Large soft tissue defects often have to be covered by extensive flap procedures. The optimum point of time for plastic reconstruction is an essential question and represents a controversial issue in the literature. To be able to compare different patient cohorts in the future, we classify crush injuries into five clinically relevant categories. In the course of…

[A case of crushing head injury with bilateral abducens and facial nerve palsies].

A 20-year-old male was admitted to our hospital suffering from a crushing head injury. At accident, his head had been compressed by the printing machine on both temporal regions. He remained at dull conscious. On admission one hour after the injury, he showed bilateral sixth-nerve and seventh nerve palsies and bleeding from the nose. CT scan showed marked pneumocephalus, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, fluid collections in the bilateral sphenoid sinuses and right mastoid air cells. Bone CT disclosed bilateral temporal bone fractures. MRI did not show cerebral parenchymal damage. He recovere

Management of Heel Pad Degloving Injury After Severe Foot Crush Injury: A Case Report Study.

Crush injuries of the foot and ankle are uncommon and they have a poor prognosis leading to some form of disability. Degloving injuries of the heel and foot after crush injuries are rare and very challenging to manage due to the need for reconstruction of both osseous and soft tissue architecture. We present a salvage strategy for an open injury to the foot with extensive soft tissue detachment from the plantar and dorsal surface. A 30-year-old man was transferred to the Emergency Department from a neighboring hospital with a crush injury to the foot that had resulted in a degloving injury of …

Hyperthermic injury versus crush injury in the rat sciatic nerve: a comparative functional, histopathological and morphometrical study.

Functional and morphological changes of the rat sciatic nerve after local hyperthermia (30 min, 45 degrees C) and crush treatment were compared. After hyperthermic injury nerve function loss developed in a time period of about 7 h. Nerve crush led to an immediate loss of nerve function. Nerve function loss was assessed by a motor and a sensory function test. Recovery from function loss took place in both treatment groups and was complete in 4-5 weeks. Early (within 8 h post-treatment) histopathological changes in the nerve after heating included edema, possible blood stasis and changes in the

Massive Loss of Proprioceptive Ia Synapses in Rat Spinal Motoneurons after Nerve Crush Injuries in the Postnatal Period.

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs) induce the retraction from the ventral horn of the synaptic collaterals of Ia afferents injured in the nerve, effectively removing Ia synapses from α-motoneurons. The loss of Ia input impairs functional recovery and could explain, in part, better recovery after PNIs with better Ia synaptic preservation. Synaptic losses correlate with injury severity, speed, and efficiency of muscle reinnervation and requires ventral microglia activation. It is unknown whether this plasticity is age dependent. In neonates, axotomized motoneurons and sensory neurons undergo apopt

An experimental comparison of the effects of propolis, curcumin, and methylprednisolone on crush injuries of the sciatic nerve.

BACKGROUND: Propolis and curcumin have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective features. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of propolis and curcumin on nerve healing in rat sciatic nerve crush injuries and to compare these effects with results obtained using steroid treatment. METHODS: In the sham group, the right sciatic nerves of rats were dissected and exposed, and the skin was closed without any additional manipulation. In the control group (group C), after the right sciatic nerves of rats were exposed, crush damage was inflicted using a surg…

Subacute Ulnar Nerve Compression Neuropathy Following Hand Crush Injury in the Setting of Intracanal Accessory Abductor Digiti Minimi: A Double Crush Phenomenon.

Anatomical variations within Guyon's canal such as an accessory abductor digiti minimi are described as causes of ulnar nerve compression. Here we present a unique case of delayed ulnar neuropathy following treatment of left fourth metacarpal base fracture with percutaneous pinning fixation and an uncomplicated two month postoperative course. He returned with new ulnar sensory loss and motor weakness. EMG demonstrated nerve compression with CT identifying an accessory abductor digiti minimi in Guyon's canal. Following Guyon's canal release with partial accessory muscle resection, there was imm
