Immuno-physiological effects of dietary reishi mushroom powder as a source of beta-glucan on Rohu, Labeo rohita challenged with Aeromonas veronii.

Beta-glucans have immense potential to stimulate immune modulation in fish by being injected intramuscularly, supplemented with feed or immersion routes of administration. We studied how supplementing Labeo rohita's diet with reishi mushroom powder containing beta-glucan influenced immunological function. A supplemented diet containing 10% reishi mushroom powder was administered for 120 days. Afterwards, analyses were conducted on different immunological parameters such as antioxidants, respiratory burst, reactive oxygen species (ROS), alternative complement activity, and serum immunoglobulin,

Another plea for 'best practice' in molecular approaches to trematode systematics: Diplostomum sp. clade Q identified as Diplostomum baeri Dubois, 1937 in Europe.

DNA sequence data became an integral part of species characterization and identification. Still, specimens associated with a particular DNA sequence must be identified by the use of traditional morphology-based analysis and correct linking of sequence and identification must be ensured. Only a small part of DNA sequences of the genus Diplostomum (Diplostomidae) is based on adult isolates which are essential for accurate identification. In this study, we provide species identification with an aid of morphological and molecular (cox1, ITS-5.8S-ITS2 and 28S) characterization of adults of Diplosto

Surviving in the fish gut: Comparative inhibitory capacities against the host proteinases in cestodes of the genus Proteocephalus.

Currently, little is known about inhibitory substances enabling tapeworms to settle in fish intestines thereby avoiding proteolysis. Contrary to previous studies with certain host-parasite pairs, this research compares the inhibitory capacities in three tapeworm species of the same genus Proteocephalus from four different fishes (P. torulosus from dace and zope, P. sagittus from stone loach and P. cernuae from ruffe). The tapeworm extracts studied significantly reduced the activity of commercial trypsin (although to a lesser degree than the synthetic inhibitor of serine proteinases PMSF), disp

Mass Death of Predatory Carp, Chanodichthys erythropterus, Induced by Plerocercoid Larvae of Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae).

We describe here the mass death of predatory carp, Chanodichthys erythropterus, in Korea induced by plerocercoid larvae of Ligula intestinalis as a result of host manipulation. The carcasses of fish with ligulid larvae were first found in the river-edge areas of Chilgok-bo in Nakdong-gang (River), Korea at early February 2016. This ecological phenomena also occurred in the adjacent areas of 3 dams of Nakdong-gang, i.e., Gangjeong-bo, Dalseong-bo, and Hapcheon-Changnyeong-bo. Total 1,173 fish carcasses were collected from the 4 regions. To examine the cause of death, we captured 10 wondering ca

Aspects of the morphology of the juvenile life stages of Paradiplozoon ichthyoxanthon Avenant-Oldewage, 2013 (Monogenea: Diplozoidae).

There are eight life stages in the life-cycle of Diplozoon paradoxum and limited knowledge of the life-cycle for other diplozoid genera exists. The aim of this study was to record the number of life-stages of Paradiplozoon ichthyoxanthon obtained from, Labeobarbus aeneus and Labeobarbus kimberlyensis, in the Vaal Dam from 2005 to 2007. Six larval life stages and one adult stage of P. ichtyoxanthon were identified from specimens collected in vitro and in situ. In vitro, eggs hatched after 21 days at 18°C. Eggs collected during winter were significantly larger than those laid during spring or su

Opisthorchis viverrini: changes of the tegumental surface in newly excysted juvenile, first-week and adult flukes.

The tegumental surface of the newly excysted juvenile, first-week and adult stages of a human liver fluke, Opisthorchis viverrini, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The surface of the newly excysted juvenile is characterized by circumferentially arranged ridges alternated with troughs which bear rows of spines encircling the body. These spines are characterized by the shapes of their edges: the first type with serrated edge appears on the anterior part, and the second type with single sharp edge appears on the middle part. There are no spines on the posterior part of the body. Three

Immunoreactive methionine-enkephalin in the caudal neurosecretory system of the carp, Cyprinus carpio.

Methionine-enkephalin (Met-enk) was detected by immunocytochemistry and radioimmunoassay in the caudal neuro-secretory system of the carp Cyprinus carpio. Some cells showing urotensin I (UI)-immunoreactivity reacted to Met-enk antiserum, but others did not. Neurons with urotensin II (UII)-immunoreactivity did not react to Met-enk antiserum; neurons with both UI and UII immunoreactivities also displayed a negative Met-enk reaction. Met-enk was detected by radioimmunoassay in the urophysis, although the content was relatively small compared with that found in other parts of the central nervous s

Interactive effect of chromium compounds and a fungal parasite on carp eggs.

A fungal parasite (Saprolegniales) of carp eggs was exposed to hexavalent and trivalent chromium compounds at concentrations identical to those used in a study of the effects of the same compounds on carp eggs hatchability. Comparison of data from both experiments revealed that increased egg mortality and increased fungal growth were cooupled at low concentrations of the compounds. A mechanism for the interaction of a chemical stress and a biological stress on carp egg survival in natural systems is presented.

Reduced predator avoidance follows ocular and lateral line pathology in minnow species after diesel exposure.

Petroleum chemicals reach freshwater habitats and can elicit acute toxic effects on ecosystem members.1Until recently standardized acute toxicology experiments and water quality standards (also referred to as Maximum Allowable Concentrations in some jurisdictions) focused on mortality of aquatic organisms after 96 h of toxicant exposure2,3, but in nature sublethal effects can manifest into mortality and in lotic environments (streams and rivers) exposure times can be far shorter (< 24 h). Here we show that Plains Minnow (Hybognathus placitus), Fathead Minnow (Pimephales promelas), and Flathead

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal the differential response mechanisms of Gymnocypris eckloni gills to different intensities of acute heat stress.

Temperature represents one of the most critical environmental factors constraining the aquaculture of cold-water fish species. As the primary respiratory organ directly interfacing with the external environment, the gill is among the tissues most sensitive to thermal stress. To elucidate the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying the thermal response of the plateau cold-water fish Gymnocypris eckloni, this study aimed to investigate the effects of acute heat stress of varying intensities on gill tissue damage and its intrinsic response mechanisms. After acclimation at 16 °C (control

Preliminary insights into fish movements beyond the massive Iron Gate dams on the Danube River using acoustic telemetry.

Upstream fish movement in the Danube River at the Iron Gate is blocked by the massive hydropower dams and ship locks, as shown by tracking six fish species (vimba bream Vimba vimba, common nase Chondrostoma nasus, barbel Barbus barbus, asp Leuciscus aspius, Pontic shad Alosa immaculata and common carp Cyprinus carpio). In the absence of effective fish passage systems, the current level of river connectivity is insufficient to support upstream movement and migration for this diverse, multispecies fish community. The tagged cyprinids displayed evidence of migratory behaviour. Individuals of vimb

Nonylphenol reduced the number of haploids in in vitro spermatogenesis of the endangered cyprinid Gnathopogon caerulescens.

Nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine disrupting chemical, is widely used in industrial and agricultural processes, causing NP influx into aquatic environments. NP induces hormonal imbalance, and male feminization, and reduces germ cell production during spermatogenesis; however, the mechanism by which it affects spermatogenesis remains unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of NP on spermatogenesis in honmoroko (Gnathopogon caerulescens), an endangered fish endemic to Lake Biwa, Japan, using an in vitro differentiation system. We collected spermatogonia from the testes of non-spawning G. caerules

InP/ZnS quantum dots cause liver damage in rare minnow (Gobiocypris rarus) larvae.

InP/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are widely used in biomedical imaging and light-emitting component manufacturing industries, but there are few studies on their biological toxicity. In this study, we conducted experiments with rare minnow larvae and found that InP/ZnS QDs can cause liver damage. InP/ZnS QDs appeared only in the intestine of larvae and were not enriched in other parts of the larvae. The activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) increased, while the decrease in bile acid. InP/ZnS QDs caused hepatic cell nuclear lysis, a

Aggression repeatability in stressed fish in response to an environmental concentration of sertraline and lunar cycle as evidenced by brain metabolomics.

Sertraline is an environmental pollutant which received magnified scientific attention due to its global presence in waters. Adverse effects on feeding, reproduction and other traits were observed mostly in unstressed aquatic organisms. Chronic stress, however, induces significant physiological changes, and the effects of sertraline in stressed fish may differ from those observed in non-stressed individuals. The current laboratory study addresses this gap by repeatedly monitoring the individual aggression of chronically stressed juvenile chub (Squalius cephalus L.) using the non-reversing mirr

Effects of Nitrate and Conductivity on Embryo-Larval Fathead Minnows.

Nitrate concentrations have been rising in surface waters over the last century and now frequently exceed drinking water standards and environmental safety benchmarks globally. Health-wise, these trends are concerning because nitrate has been shown to disrupt endocrine function and developmental outcomes. The present study investigated potential sublethal effects of nitrate on developing fathead minnows. Fish were exposed from fertilization through 21 days postfertilization (dpf) to environmentally relevant concentrations of nitrate (0, 2, 5, 10, 25, or 100 mg/L NO3 -N as NaNO3 ). Nitrate effe

Pathogenesis of Erysipelothrix piscisicarius infection in tiger barbs (Puntigrus tetrazona).

Erysipelothrix piscisicarius is an emerging bacterial pathogen and the aetiologic agent of piscine erysipelosis, a recently recognized disease of ornamental fish. However, little is known regarding the dynamics of infection in fish. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis of piscine erysipelosis in the tiger barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) by investigating tissue tropisms and responses to bacterial dissemination following immersion challenge with a virulent strain recovered from diseased fish. The challenge resulted in 83% mortality by day 16. Erysipelothrix

Heatwave effects on the swimming behaviour of a Mediterranean freshwater fish, the Iberian barbel Luciobarbus bocagei.

Heatwaves, which can be defined as increases of at least 5 °C in air temperature for more than five consecutive days for a specified reference period, are expected to become more frequent under the ongoing climate change, with freshwater organisms being particularly vulnerable to high temperature fluctuations. In Mediterranean-climate areas, depending on the extent of summer droughts and loss of longitudinal connectivity, river segments may become isolated, maintaining fish populations confined to a series of disconnected pools, with no possibility to move to thermal refugia and thus becoming
