To obtain quantitative information about the use of HLA antigens as restriction element by antiviral cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), we have analyzed precursors of human mumps virus-specific CTL by limiting dilution. CTL generated by restimulation of peripheral blood T lymphocytes with autologous mumps virus (MV)-infected stimulator cells were restricted by autologous HLA class I antigens, and derived from the T4-8+ population. This paper deals with the standardization of human natural killer (NK) cell assays for the sequential evaluation of patients with various disease states, or who are being treated with biological response modifiers. OBJECTIVES: To assess natural killer (NK) and cytotoxic functions in patients with systemic-onset juvenile rheumatoid arthrithis (soJRA) complicated by macrophage activation syndrome (MAS).

Juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) is an autoimmune condition which causes significant morbidity in children and young adults and is more severe in its presentation than adult-onset SLE. We studied the capacity of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from patients with malignant brain tumors to produce interleukin-2 (IL-2) and to respond to IL-2. The role of IL-2 in the generation of T cells cytotoxic against tumor cells was also studied. PBLs from the patients with malignant brain tumors tended to produce a level of IL-2 lower than that in normal controls because of the decreased number of IL-2-producing T cells.
