Raised in Darkness: A 7-Month-Old With Nystagmus From Severe Visual Deprivation.

Child neglect is the most common form of child maltreatment and accounts for 60% of all cases reported to child protective services. Whereas physical and emotional neglect account for a quarter of the reported cases of child neglect, educational neglect accounts for half of the cases. We describe a 7-month-old infant with several manifestations of physical and emotional neglect including excessive quietness, failure to thrive, global developmental delay, and a gastric lactobezoar. In addition, our patient had a fine, lateral nystagmus likely due to being kept in the dark for long periods. To o

Light and Darkness: Prevalence of Hepatitis E Virus Infection among the General Population.

Human hepatitis E virus (HHEV) spreads early in life among the population in areas endemic for genotype 1 and infects mainly adults in areas endemic for genotype 3, where it would be responsible for about 10% of cases of suspected acute viral hepatitis of unknown etiology and for a number of subclinical, unrecognized infections. The overall prevalence of antibody to HHEV is high in most of the former areas and low in most of the later ones, but wide regional differences have been recorded in both cases. "Hot spots" of HHEV infection would exist for both types of strains in particular regions o

Human retinal light sensitivity and melatonin rhythms following four days in near darkness.

The rods in the retina are responsible for night vision, whereas the cone system enables day vision. We studied whether rod function in humans exhibits an endogenous circadian rhythm and if changes occur in conditions of prolonged darkness. Seven healthy subjects (mean age+/-SD: 25.6+/-12.3 yr) completed a 4.5-day protocol during which they were kept in complete darkness (days 1 and 4) and near darkness (<0.1 lux red light, days 2 and 3). Electroretinography (ERG) and saliva collections were done at intervals of at least 3 h for 27 h on days 1 and 4. Full-field ERGs were recorded over 10 low-i…

Melatonin, hormone of darkness and more: occurrence, control mechanisms, actions and bioactive metabolites.

In its role as a pineal hormone, melatonin is a pleiotropic, nocturnally peaking and systemically acting chronobiotic. These effects are largely explained by actions via G protein-coupled membrane receptors found in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, but also in numerous other sites. Nuclear (ROR/RZR), cytoplasmic (quinone reductase-2, calmodulin, calreticulin) and mitochondrial binding sites and radical-scavenging properties contribute to the actions of melatonin. Regulation of pineal melatonin biosynthesis is largely explained by control mechanisms acting on arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase, at

Darkness-enhanced startle responses in ecologically valid environments: a virtual tunnel driving experiment.

Using the startle reflex methodology, researchers have shown that darkness, a phylogenetically relevant aversive context for humans, elicits fear responses. The present study replicated these findings in an ecologically valid situation, a virtual tunnel drive. Furthermore, the study focused on the question whether the darkness-enhanced startle response is modulated by an additional task involvement of the participants. Startle responses were assessed during virtual tunnel drives with darker and brighter sections. Participants once actively drove the virtual car and once passively sat in the ca…

Pupil diameter in darkness differentiates progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) from other extrapyramidal syndromes.

The most important features that characterize and differentiate progressive supranuclear palsy from other Parkinsonian syndromes are postural instability, supranuclear gaze palsy, pseudobulbar palsy, parkinsonism, and cognitive disturbances. In this article, we demonstrate that progressive supranuclear palsy patients exhibit pathologically decreased pupil diameters after dark adaptation recorded by TV pupillography. A cut off value of 3.99 mm was defined to differentiate progressive supranuclear palsy patients from patients with other extrapyramidal disorders like Parkinson's disease and multi

Lighten the darkness: Personality interventions targeting agreeableness also reduce participants' levels of the dark triad.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that people want to change their big five traits-and moreover, they may be able to do so. This paper extends these findings in three ways. First, I examined the extent to which people want to change their levels of the dark triad-Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. Second, I tested whether desires to change the dark triad predicted actual changes in the corresponding traits across approximately four months. Finally, participants received an intervention designed to change their big five personality traits. Consequently, I tested whether this int

Shaking in Darkness: Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES)-Induced Acute Bilateral Blindness and Seizures.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurologic disorder that causes acute or subacute cerebral edema, brain capillary leakage, and a hyperperfusion encephalopathy that results in presenting symptoms of headache, vision changes, seizure activity, altered mentation, nausea or vomiting, or focal neurologic deficits. We describe a case of PRES in the setting of severe hypertension presenting with total blindness and seizure activity in a patient with multiple risk factors. The patient had previous episodes of PRES in the past that led to the development of a seizure disorder.

HIV-positive in the darkness of a correctional facility: more vulnerable and less treated.

In French Guiana, 4.5-5.0% of HIV-infected persons experienced an incarceration between 2007 and 2013. A cross-sectional survey was performed to describe the epidemiology and treatment outcomes of a population of HIV-infected inmates in French Guiana. The study population was patients released between 1/2007 and 12/2013, after >30 days of incarceration (n = 147). A secondary objective aimed to identify its main specificities, relative to both the general inmate population and the nonincarcerated HIV population. The socioeconomic situation of HIV-infected inmates was particularly precarious, re

Ten days of darkness causes temporary blindness during an early critical period in felines.

Extended periods of darkness have long been used to study how the mammalian visual system develops in the absence of any instruction from vision. Because of the relative ease of implementation of darkness as a means to eliminate visually driven neural activity, it has usually been imposed earlier in life and for much longer periods than was the case for other manipulations of the early visual input used for study of their influences on visual system development. Recently, it was shown that following a very brief (10 days) period of darkness imposed at five weeks of age, kittens emerged blind. …

The heart of darkness: growth and form of Trypanosoma brucei in the tsetse fly.

The first description of African trypanosomes was made over a century ago. The importance of the tsetse in transmission and cyclic development of trypanosomes was discovered soon afterwards, and has been the focus of numerous studies since. However, investigation of trypanosomes in tsetse flies requires high resource investment and unusual patience; hence, many facets of trypanosome biology in the tsetse remain to be characterised despite the long history of research. Here, current knowledge and questions about some of the developmental changes in trypanosomes that occur in tsetse flies are su

Influence of light and darkness on the behaviour of Dermanyssus gallinae on layer farms.

The behaviour of Dermanyssus gallinae was investigated on two layer farms where two different light programs were introduced in the 40th week of hen life. In layer house No. 1, light was applied continuously for 16 hours during the day, while layer house No. 2 was subjected to 4 hours of light and 2 hours of darkness applied alternately during the day. To monitor the level of red mite infestation, 30 tube traps were placed in every layer house corridor at a height of 1.5 m above the floor. In the first layer house, 280 Dermanyssus gallinae females, 50 nymph larvae and 198 eggs were found in 10…

Temporal changes in the pattern of melatonin secretion in sheep held in constant darkness.

The pattern of melatonin secretion was investigated in six 2 yr-old Suffolk ewes transferred from a long-day lighting regime (14L:10D) to continuous darkness. During the 9 d in continuous darkness, five of the ewes maintained a characteristic diurnal rhythm in melatonin secretion. However, there was a systematic change in the duration of each episode of melatonin secretion with the result that it extended from 10 h under the entraining lighting regime to about 19 h by the fourth cycle and then contracted to about 14 h by the eighth cycle under continuous darkness. The pattern of individual ewe…

The endocrinology of sunlight and darkness. Complementary roles of vitamin D and pineal hormones.

Information from autoradiographic studies and follow-up indicates that 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 (soltriol) is a somatotrophic activator and modulator, regulated by the amount of sunshine and the endocrine status of the individual, with the purpose of promoting development, reproduction, and maintenance of life. Regulation of calcium homeostasis is only one of its many functions. A close link to the pineal hormone system is apparent. Evidence supports the new concept that the skin-derived hormone of sunlight and the pineal hormone(s) of darkness are messengers with comprehensive actions on endocrin…

Total darkness activated intestinal clock system and improved intestinal barrier function in growing rabbits.

The aim of study was to investigate the effects of dark environment on production performance, intestinal barrier function and clock-related gene expression in rabbits. Forty weaned rabbits with similar body weight (35-day-old) were randomly divided into 2 treatments (20 replicates per treatment, 1 rabbit per replicate: normal light group (12 L and 12 D) or total dark group (24 D). The experimental period lasted for 10 days, with an adaptation period of 3 days and a subsequent formal experimental period of 7 days. The results showed that feed-to-weight ratio of rabbits in total dark group was
