Reversible and irreversible painful pulpitides: diagnosis and treatment.

The foregoing clinical evidence indicates that when pain is severe, or when mild to moderate pain is present with a previous history of pain in the aching tooth, with or without periapical radiolucency, the tooth is in the IRPP category. Treatment dictates endodontic therapy or extraction. On the other hand, when clinical evidence indicates that the pain is mild or moderate with no previous history of pain, normal pulp vitality, and there is no positive percussion sign, the pulp is in the RPP category. Treatment dictates indirect or direct pulp capping in teeth with or without periapical radio

Pulp and periodontal healing, root development and root resorption subsequent to transplantation and orthodontic rotation: a long-term study of autotransplanted premolars.

One hundred and eighteen premolars transplanted at a stage with 3/4 to 4/4 root development with a wide open apical foramen were followed with standardized clinical and radiographic techniques for signs of pulpal and periodontal ligament healing and root development. Pulp healing, evaluated first by radiographic presence of pulp canal obliteration, appeared to be an earlier sign of pulp healing than the detection of pulp vitality with an electrometric test. Continued root growth of premolars was seen in some cases. Complete arrest of root development was usually followed by development of the

Delayed Treatment with Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Accelerates Functional Recovery and Modifies Responses of Peri-Infarct Astrocytes Following Photothrombotic Stroke in Rats.

Dental pulp contains multipotent mesenchymal stem cells that improve outcomes when administered early after temporary middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats. To further assess the therapeutic potential of these cells, we tested whether functional recovery following stroke induced by photothrombosis could be modified by a delayed treatment that was initiated after the infarct attained maximal volume. Photothrombosis induces permanent focal ischemia resulting in tissue changes that better reflect key aspects of the many human strokes in which early restoration of blood flow does not occur. Hum

The clinical meaning of external cervical resorption in maxillary canine: transoperative dental trauma.

External Cervical Resorption in maxillary canines with pulp vitality is frequently associated with dental trauma resulting from surgical procedures carried out to prepare the teeth for further orthodontic traction. Preparation procedures might surgically manipulate the cementoenamel junction or cause luxation of teeth due to applying excessive force or movement tests beyond the tolerance limits of periodontal ligament and cervical tissue structures. Dentin exposure at the cementoenamel junction triggers External Cervical Resorption as a result of inflammation followed by antigen recognition of

Sensory pulpal nerve fibres and trigeminal ganglion neurons express IL-1RI: a potential mechanism for development of inflammatory hyperalgesia.

AIM: To localize interleukin-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) in rat dental pulp and trigeminal ganglion (TG) and to test the hypothesis that pulpal inflammation increases neuronal expression of IL-1RI. METHODOLOGY: Female Wistar rats were subjected to unilateral pulp exposures in the maxillary and mandibular first molars, whereas the contralateral jaws served as untreated controls. Seven days later the animals were transcardiacally perfused and the jaws and the TGs were removed and prepared for immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactivity for IL-1RI was examined alone (DAB) and together with calcitonin

Evaluation of Cytotoxicity of Allium sativum (Garlic Extract) against Human Dental Pulp Fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Vital pulp therapy procedures in primary dentition focuses on preservation and maintenance of pulp tissue that has been compromised due to caries, trauma, etc. Several pulp dressing materials have been used in primary teeth and some natural materials from the field of traditional medicine have also been introduced as medicaments in vital pulp therapy. The understanding of biologic and cytotoxic properties of newer materials is important for safe clinical usage. The biologic compatibility of these newer materials is imperative to limit or avoid tissue irritation or degeneration. AI

Safety of the ArF193 excimer laser for the removal of dental plaque and calculi: an in vitro histological study.

OBJECTIVE: To assay the safety of the ArF excimer laser in the integrity of human pulp elements. BACKGROUND DATA: The use of lasers in dentistry remains controversial, in spite of their increasing application in medical practice. The main reason for this discrepancy is the frequent report of damage to surrounding tissues and the dental pulp, due to the energy transfer, from the site of laser impact. The progress made on laser technology during the last 10 years, could overcome this obstacle and allow the use of lasers in dentistry. METHODS AND RESULTS: The present study reports the use of th

Ultrasonic techniques to obtain dental pulp from impacted third molars.

BACKGROUND: In the dental clinic impacted teeth are frequent findings, especially upper and lower third molars, leading to their exodontia. Among surgical techniques piezosurgery is advantageous for delicate structures in the oral cavity. Extracted teeth, usually discarded, have been revalued as biological material, providing living tissues with possible applications in regenerative dentistry. The aim was to compare cross-section methods of upper included third molars by ultrasonic piezoelectric technique to obtain dental pulp, with diamond-coated tip (DT) against titanium nitride-coated tip (

A comparison of laser Doppler flowmetry with other methods of assessing the vitality of traumatised anterior teeth.

Laser Doppler flowmetry is a non-invasive electrooptical technique which allows the semi-quantitative recording of pulpal blood flow. This study aimed to determine the reliability (measured as the sensitivity and specificity) of laser Doppler flowmetry as a method of assessing the vitality of traumatised anterior teeth, and to compare it with standard pulpal diagnostic tests. Recordings of pulpal blood flow were taken from 67 non-vital anterior teeth (55 patients), where the pulpal status was confirmed by pulpectomy. For comparison, recordings were also taken from 84 vital anterior teeth (84 p

Ginsenoside RB1 Influences Macrophage-DPSC Interactions in Inflammatory Conditions.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Unresolved inflammation and tissue destruction are supposed to underlie the failure of dental pulp repair. As crucial regulators of the injury response, dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) play a key role in pulp tissue repair and regeneration. M2 macrophages have been demonstrated to induce osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of DPSCs. Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) is the major component of ginseng and manifested an anti-inflammatory role by promoting M1 macrophage polarised into M2 macrophage in inflammatory disease. However, whether GRb1 facilitates odontogenic differentiation

Response of human dental pulp capped with biodentine and mineral trioxide aggregate.

INTRODUCTION: Biodentine is a new bioactive cement that is similar to the widely used mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). It has dentin-like mechanical properties, which may be considered a suitable material for clinical indications of dentin-pulp complex regeneration such as direct pulp capping. The purpose of the present study was to compare the response of the pulp-dentin complex in human teeth after direct capping with this new tricalcium silicate-based cement with that of MTA. METHODS: Pulps in 28 caries-free maxillary and mandibular permanent intact human molars scheduled for extraction f
