Investigations of seborrheic dermatitis. Part II. Influence of itraconazole on the clinical condition and the level of selected cytokines in seborrheic dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: The pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis has not been fully elucidated. A number of anascogenic yeasts of Malassezia spp. appear to be involved in the intensity of the symptoms. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the levels of selected inflammatory cytokines, IL-2, IL-4, IFN-γ and TNF-α, in the serum after treatment with itraconazole. MATERIAL/METHODS: Sixty-six subjects were enrolled in the study. The control group consisted of 30 participants (23 females and 7 males) without any clinical disorders, aged 24-65 (37.41±6.08 years). Thirty-six patients with seborrheic dermat

Alteration in skin mycobiome due to atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis.

A microbiome consists of viruses, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and other microeukaryotes. It influences host immune systems and contributes to the development of various diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, asthma, and skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and has various microorganisms on its surface. Several studies on skin microbiomes have illustrated the effects of their composition, metabolites, and interactions with host cells on diseases. However, most studies have focused on the bacterial microbiome rather tha

Molecular Mechanisms in Seborrheic Dermatitis-Systematic Review.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a multifactorial pathogenesis involving immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, neuroendocrine signaling, and alterations of the epidermal barrier-lipid axis. Increasing molecular evidence indicates that SD is associated with both systemic and cutaneous abnormalities, including elevated β-endorphin levels, disturbed redox homeostasis, enhanced lipid peroxidation, dysregulated cytokine signaling, and genetic and epigenetic susceptibility factors. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Com

Nutrition, Obesity, and Seborrheic Dermatitis: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenesis of seborrheic dermatitis involves lipid secretion by sebaceous glands, Malassezia colonization, and an inflammatory response with skin barrier disruption. Each of these pathways could be modulated by diet, obesity, and nutritional supplements. Current treatment options provide only temporary control of the condition; thus, it is essential to recognize modifiable lifestyle factors that may play a role in determining disease severity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to summarize published evidence on diet, nutritional supplements, alcohol, obesity, and micronutrients in pat

Seborrheic dermatitis among Oxford renal transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory dermatosis with a prevalence of 1-3% in the general population. It is recognized more commonly in those infected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). No studies have looked at Seborrheic dermatitis in the context of immunosuppression secondary to organ transplantation. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of Seborrheic dermatitis in a renal transplant population and characteristics of those affected. METHODS: A prospective study of 308 renal transplant recipients (RTRs) was carried out. All participants were examined for Seborrheic d

Essential fatty acids in infantile seborrheic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: In infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD) several different pathogenetic mechanisms have been proposed. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the importance of essential fatty acids (EFAs) and their metabolites in the origin of ISD. METHODS: The serum EFA patterns of 30 children with ISD, 1 to 6 months of age, were studied for 2 to 5 months. Blood samples were obtained at the time of diagnosis and after spontaneous recovery. Control samples were taken from age-matched healthy children. RESULTS: In children with active dermatitis levels of EFA 18:1w9 were increase

Current Understanding of Seborrheic Dermatitis: Treatment Options.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects areas with a high density of sebaceous glands, such as the scalp, face, central anterior trunk, and body folds. While the exact pathophysiology of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood, it is believed to involve a combination of microbial dysbiosis, immune imbalance, and skin barrier dysfunction. Effective management of seborrheic dermatitis includes treatments that reduce Malassezia yeast colonization, control inflammation, normalize skin barrier dysfunction, and regulate sebum production.
