Infectious diseases continue to pose a substantial threat to the health and operations of military personnel around the world. Deployment to endemic regions, environmental exposures, and trauma increase susceptibility to both common and rare pathogens. Many of these infectious agents manifest with dermatologic findings that may serve as early clinical indicators, particularly in austere environments where diagnostic resources are limited. This review describes select rare infectious agents encountered by United States military personnel that manifest with cutaneous findings. Epidemiologic risk

Medications used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease cause a wide range of dermatologic side effects, and minimal guidance exists on how to manage them. The intention of this review article is to summarize common dermatologic adverse reactions related to inflammatory bowel disease therapy and to provide evidence-based guidance on management. We conducted a scoping review using PubMed and Google Scholar to identify studies reporting clinical information on dermatologic side effects of medications used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. The most commonly reported dermatol

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare inflammatory dermatologic condition with neutrophilic infiltration of the skin that causes pustules and ulcerations. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are immunomodulating agents that have been recently described in the literature as an effective treatment for PG. We describe a patient with PG on the lower extremities successfully treated with baricitinib. We also conducted a narrative review of the literature of PG patients treated with JAK inhibitors who were refractory to other treatments.

Eruptive melanocytic nevi (EMN) are rare multiple benign melanocytic nevi that develop within a few months. The phenomenon has been associated with a variety of dermatologic and systemic conditions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, epidermolysis bullosa, Addison disease, human immunodeficiency virus infection, and internal malignancy, among others. It also is commonly attributed to medications, particularly immunosuppressive and chemotherapeutic agents. We report a case of EMN in a 50-year-old man undergoing azathioprine therapy for antisynthetase syndrome.

BACKGROUND: While a plethora of literature continues to be published on the role of nutritional agents both in lay press and indexed journals, the data is not on a firm footing and leaves the dermatologist in a quandry and the patient confused. The various agents include vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, diets & gluten. A proper knowledge of the role of nutritional supplements in dermatological diseases can be a useful tool in advising the patients and in certain cases ameliorating the disorder.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Literature review of last 15 years was made using the terms "diet i

IMPORTANCE: Biologic agents are commonly used with conventional immunosuppressants for treatment of immune-mediated dermatologic diseases, raising concerns about tuberculosis (TB) risk, particularly in high-burden geographic regions. Previous studies have shown inconsistent results across biologic classes, with most focusing on active TB and limited data on latent TB infection (LTBI) conversion.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence of active TB and LTBI conversion in dermatologic patients receiving systemic therapy and to explore differences by biologic class and regional TB burden.

The use of soaps and synthetic detergent (syndet) bars has been associated with skin dryness and aggravation of dermatologic conditions. A number of factors, including chemical structure, pH, and cleansing ability, have been implicated in this phenomenon. Many bars contain agents designed to ameliorate the irritancy of the bar and/or provide a skin benefit. Clinical studies have shown that soaps are generally quite irritating while syndets can range from mild to harsh. The addition of skin benefit/mildness agents such as glycerin, cocoa butter, mineral oil, or lanolin has little effect on the

INTRODUCTION: Risankizumab is an interleukin 23p19 inhibitor, approved by the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the management of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. Apart from its utility in psoriasis, there are a number of other dermatologic conditions where risankizumab has demonstrated value. The aim of this narrative review is to describe the utility of risankizumab in psoriasis, as well as its implication in off-label dermatologic disorders.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus and ResearchGate were searched for scholarly articles related to risankizumab and it

Recent advances have highlighted exosomes as promising therapeutic, prognostic, and diagnostic agents in dermatology and aesthetic medicine, suggesting their expanding role in various skin conditions. This comprehensive review examines the current applications and future directions of exosomes in dermatological practice. The analysis of available literature reveals a growing market of exosome-based products internationally and within the United States, with diverse formulations primarily derived from human stem cells. Clinical studies of exosomes have demonstrated clinical efficacy in addressi

The incidence of cases of dermatophytosis in dermatology outpatient departments has increased in recent years. Infection control is essential to prevent transmission, and accurate diagnosis of this type of infection is important to avoid confusion with other dermatological processes caused by non-fungal agents. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of dermatophytosis and its etiological agents in a public hospital of São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. From February 2005 to May 2006, 273 samples were collected from 191 patients in a public dermatology outpatient department. The

The hairless (Hr) gene encodes a transcriptional co-repressor highly expressed in the mammalian skin. In the mouse, several null and hypomorphic Hr alleles have been identified resulting in hairlessness in homozygous animals, characterized by alopecia developing after a single cycle of relatively normal hair growth. Mutations in the human ortholog have also been associated with congenital alopecia. Although a variety of hairless strains have been developed, outbred SKH1 mice are the most widely used in dermatologic research. These unpigmented and immunocompetent mice allow for ready manipulati

This chapter reviews the epidemiology, manifestations, etiologic agents, and exposure controls related to occupational allergies from animals and insects, including both respiratory and dermatologic responses. The overall prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in exposed workers is about 23% 4-9% of exposed individuals develop asthma. Symptom development is related to duration and intensity of exposure. The most prevalent dermatologic findings are contact urticaria and eczematous dermatitis. While a history of atopy is associated with the risk of symptom development, this factor has poor

Actinic (solar) keratoses (AK) have the potential for malignant transformation and are the second most common diagnosis in dermatologic practices. No well-established clinical criteria are available to determine which AK are more likely to undergo malignant transformation; therefore, many dermatologists utilize field-directed approaches to treat all visible and subclinical AK on an affected skin surface. Current topical therapeutic agents require lengthy treatment regimens and are less well tolerated than many newer and investigational agents. We review and compare the efficacy and tolerabilit

Superficial fungal infections are common dermatologic conditions, and patients often visit primary care physicians for evaluation. Diagnosis can be established with direct microscopic examination, fungal culture, and Wood's light examination. Some infections (eg, tinea corporis, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, pityriasis versicolor) are often successfully treated with a topical antifungal alone. Others (eg, tinea capitis, onychomycosis) require use of a systemic antifungal. Physicians should be familiar with available agents and their adverse effects and closely follow patients receiving long-term

T-cell-redirecting immunotherapies, including bispecific antibodies and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies, have rapidly become major treatment options of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma but are associated with a distinctive spectrum of cutaneous toxicities. Dermatologic manifestations are particularly prominent with GPRC5D-targeting agents, reflecting on-target, off-tumor activity against hard-keratinizing tissues, whereas BCMA-targeted bispecific antibodies and anti-BCMA CAR T-cell therapies are associated with milder and less phenotypically distinct cutaneous adverse e

Immunotherapies targeting cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 (CTLA-4) and the programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) receptor and its ligand (PD-L1) have showed substantial therapeutic benefit in patients with clinically advanced solid malignancies. However, autoimmune toxicities are common and often significant adverse events with these agents. While rash and pruritus remain the most common cutaneous complications in treated patients, novel dermatologic toxicities related to immune checkpoint blockade continue to emerge as the number of patients exposed to immunotherapy increases. Here, we d

Many dermatologic medications have the potential to induce ocular complications. Traditional medications, including corticosteroids, retinoids, antibiotics, antihistamines, and immunosuppressants, have been associated with eye dryness, irritation, allergy, infection, atrophy, pigmentary changes, increased intraocular pressure, and impaired vision. Novel therapeutic agents such as biologics raise new concerns for ocular surface disease and conjunctivitis. Dermatologists should recognize these oculocutaneous side effects for appropriate decision-making, coordinating interdisciplinary care, and o
