To our knowledge, isolated dextrocardia in association with congenital complete atrioventricular heart block has not been previously reported. We report such a case, elaborate on the possible pathogenesis, and present our experience with management.

Surgical correction of valvular heart disease in patients with dextrocardia is extremely rare. We report a surgical case of mitral valve repair in a patient with acquired dextrocardia. Successful mitral valve repair was performed through a right lateral thoracotomy. We describe our surgical strategy and summarize the literature.

Baller-Gerold Syndrome (BGS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is apparent at birth. The disorder is characterized by distinctive malformations of the skull and facial area and bones of the forearms and hands. We report a 4 year old boy in whom the clinical features of craniosynostosis and bilateral absent thumbs and radii led to a diagnosis of Baller-Gerold syndrome. Physical examination revealed that the heart was localized to the right side. Echocardiography confirmed dextrocardia. Dextrocardia has not previously been reported with Baller-Gerold syndrome. To the best of our knowle…

Dextrocardia refers to the position of the heart in the right side of the chest. It is a rare clinical phenomenon with a reported incidence of 1 in 5,000-30,000. Although there is a variation in terminology and classification with regard to dextrocardia, the condition of right-sided heart with situs solitus is most commonly referred to as dextroversion. The authors report the case of dextroversion in a patient who presented in their hospital for evaluation of chest pain on exertion. Cardiac catheterization produced unfamiliar angiographic images, but there was no severe technical problem durin…

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital condition presentingwith typical features including an absent costosternal head of pectoralis major andipsilateral brachysyndactyly. There are many clinical variations of the syndrome including rib defects, absence of shoulder girdle muscle and breast hypoplasia or agenesis. Dextrocardia is rarely associated with Poland Syndrome with only 22 cases being previously reported in the worldwide literature. Whereas 'classical' Poland syndrome is predominantly right sided, all cases associated with dextrocardia have been left sided. We report a further case of lef…

A rare case of dextrocardia in association with eventration of left hemidiaphragm who failed to thrive is presented. Growth retardation could not be attributed to these congential anomalies.

Dextrocardia, a rare congenital heart condition, can occur in about 1 out of every 12,000 pregnancies. Dextrocardia with situs solitus refers to when the heart is on the right side of the thorax while other viscera are found in their normal positions. The condition can go unnoticed in cases of limited prenatal care and newborn evaluation, leading to patients never receiving pertinent cardiac evaluations and condition progression monitoring throughout their lives. This is the first case reported of isolated dextrocardia with situs solitus in a neonate without any additional cardiovascular abnor…

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is an acute reversible form of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction extending beyond a coronary artery vascular territory usually due to physical or psychological stressors. Dextrocardia with situs inversus is a rare embryologic anomaly whereby the heart and aorta are mirrored on the contralateral side. We describe a case of a 93-year-old female with dextrocardia who presented with chest pain, atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, and transient inferior ST elevation. Coronary angiography demonstrated an eccentric mid right coronary artery (RC…

ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a potentially life-threatening diagnosis that cannot be missed on ECG interpretation. However, ECG interpretation may not be straightforward in patients with dextrocardia. This case report discusses the presentation of a patient with situs inversus with dextrocardia who was found to have an acute inferior MI, and how this anatomical change results in an atypical ECG and clinical presentation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dextrocardia is rare in the general population, and may be associated with significant additional cardiac malformations. We aimed to identify the prevalence and patterns of additional cardiac defects, as well as the associated long-term morbidity and mortality, in adult patients with dextrocardia, in a specialised Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) service.
METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with dextrocardia managed by our tertiary ACHD service, since January 2000, was performed. Medical records were reviewed and the National Death Index was consulted to con…

A retrospective review of 5,539 fetal echocardiograms over a 22-year period revealed 85 cases of dextrocardia. In primary dextrocardia (46 cases), the incidence of situs solitus, inversus, and ambiguous, was similar and associated with a high incidence of complex cardiac malformations in situs solitus and situs ambiguous. Secondary dextrocardia (39 cases) was due to intrathoracic displacement and, when caused by diaphragmatic hernia, was associated with cardiac malformations in 31% of cases. Even in complex cases, fetal echocardiography was highly accurate; therefore, specific counseling can b…
