The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is a highly active scavenger whose behavior has significant impacts on rates of decomposition and skeletonization, which have previously not been addressed. In this study, scavenging by the opossum led to the skeletonization of carcasses in half of the accumulated degree days (ADD) of a comparable non-scavenged control carcass. The role of Didelphis marsupialis as a reservoir of zoonotic hemoflagellates was examined in two ecologically distinct settings in Colombia. Decrease in the lethal effect of several crotalid snake venoms were compared when diluted or mixed with opossum serum, normal horse serum, or normal dog serum and injected into mice. Abnormalities of the lower urinary and genital tracts commonly coexist, although congenital vesicovaginal fistula is extremely rare. We report the first case of congenital vesicovaginal fistula and hypoplastic kidney in association with uterine didelphys. Despite extensive investigation throughout childhood, a definitive diagnosis was not made until 16 years of age. We discuss some of the difficulties that might arise in diagnosing a small vesicovaginal fistula in the presence of a fusion abnormality of the genital tract and suggest how such cases might be investigated and managed surgically.

Eight patients with a double uterus, unilateral vaginal obstruction, and ipsilateral renal agenesis are described. The most common clinical presentation was that of the onset of pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea, in association with the finding of a pelvic mass. In seven patients, a window was created between two vaginae by transvaginal route. In one patient, the blind vagina with hematocolpos and attending uterus were extirpated by an abdominal approach.
