Four Human Cases of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense (Eucestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in China with a Brief Review of Chinese Cases.

We described 4 human infection cases of zoonotic fish-tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense, identified with morphological and molecular characters and briefly reviewed Chinese cases in consideration of it as an emerging parasitic disease in China. The scolex and mature and gravid proglottids of some cases were seen, a rosette-shaped uterus was observed in the middle of the mature and gravid proglottids, and the diphyllobothriid eggs were yellowish-brown in color and displayed a small knob or abopercular protuberance on the opposite end of a lid-like opening. The average size of the eggs was

The influence of changing prey availability on the prevalence of Diphyllobothrium in river otters from Yellowstone National Park.

Parasite prevalence in predatory mammals is influenced by numerous factors including diet, sex, season, and habitat. We examined the effect of such factors on the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in North American river otters ( Lontra canadensis ) in Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone National Park. Otters in this ecosystem have recently experienced a decline in their main prey, Yellowstone cutthroat trout ( Oncorhynchus clarkii bouvieri), and have, in turn, increased consumption of alternative foods. Helminths were found in 13.2% of otter fecal samples. The dominant parasite was a Diphyll

[Molecular identification of human Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene sequence].

Identification of Diphyllobothrium species has been carried out based on their morphology, especially sexual organs. In addition to these criteria, PCR-based identification methods have been developed recently. A 20 year-old Japanese living in Kochi Prefecture passed tapeworm. He was successfully treated with single dose of gastrografin. We examined the morphologic features of the proglottids and eggs using histology and scanning electron microscope. We also analyzed mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) gene of the proglottids. The causative tapeworm species was identified as D.

[Five human cases of Diphyllobothrium latum infection through eating raw flesh of redlip mullet, Liza haematocheila].

A total of 32 human diphyllobothriasis cases have been reported so far in Korea, excluding 21 egg-positive cases from stool examinations. Authors experienced five more human cases of Diphyllobothrium latum infection, especially infected due to eating raw flesh of redlip mullet, Liza haematocheila. Five cases were neighbors residing in the Puchon area, Kyonggi-do, who ate raw mullets (L. haematocheila) in a party in February 1996. The mullets were purchased at the Noryangjin fisheries market in Seoul. All of cases (2 males and 3 females) were 35 to 43 years old and healthy with the body weight

Single dose treatment with praziquantel (Cesol R, EmBay 8440) of human cestodiasis caused by Diphyllobothrium pacificum.

Diphyllobothrium pacificum, a large tapeworm of seals, is often found as an accidental parasite of man in Perú. The main symptoms is causes are abdominal pain, meteorismus and flatulence, and diarrhea. We report the results of 32 single-dose (10 mg/kg weight) treatments with Praziquantel (Cesol R, EmBay 8440) in 31 patients. One of these patients was shown to be cured but presented a reinfection 270 days later, and required retreatment. Praziquantel was effective in all cases. All patients were clinically cured. No ova were found in stool examinations at 30, 60, and 90 days after treatment, wh

Five cases of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense infection with discovery of plerocercoids from an infective source, Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae.

Five persons from 2 families residing at Miyama Town, Mie Prefecture, Japan, ingested fresh raw fish Oncorhynchus sp. on 9 May 1999 that was caught at Owase district in Mie. They all expelled diphyllobothriid cestodes 11-37 days after ingesting the fish. The parasites were morphologically identical to Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense Yamane et al., 1986. Five plerocercoids were detected from a portion of the fish. Nucleotide sequence of a region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of mitochondrial DNA from an adult worm was identical with that from the plerocercoid. The fish was identified

Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) in the Intestinal Tract of the Herring Gull Larus argentatus: Localization and Trophic Parameters.

We studied the activities both of digestive enzymes in the small intestine of the herring gull (Larus argentatus) and a tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) residing in the intestine. It was found that D. dendriticum infects the medial section of the small intestine of the herring gull. Such localization of D. dendriticum is caused by the maximal activity of proteases and glycosidases and by the high rate of membrane and cavitary digestion in this section. The activity of protease and glycosidase in gulls infected with D. dendriticum is decreased. The activity of

[Morphofunctional characteristics of thymus and immunological parameters in golden hamster under experimental invasion with the cestode Diphyllobothrium dendriticum].

Morphofunctional changes induced by the tapeworm in the thymus and blood of its definitive host, by an example of the experimental model "Diphyllobothrium dendriticum--Mesocricetus auratus", have been investigated. The morphofunctional changes in the thymus and immunological transformations in the organism of infested hamster are evidences of rather high immunogenic effect of the D. dendriticum antigens on the definitive host at the period of active growth of the parasites.

Dynamics of egg production of the cestode Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitzsch, 1824) (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidea) and the concept of fecundity in helminths.

The dynamics of egg production of the tapeworm D. dendriticum has been estimated experimentally in nestlings of the herring gull Larus argentatus per day and per reproductive period. Numbers of eggs in strobilae have been estimated for the maturation period. Mean egg production, of one tapeworm per day (10.42 +/- 2.72 mln) is two orders of magnitude as high as the maximal number of eggs in a mature strobila (0.206 +/- 0.007). It is proposed to estimate the coefficient of reproduction intensity as the ratio of egg output per unit of time and maximum egg numbers in a mature strobila.

[Therapeutic effect of paromomycin sulfate in the treatment of Diphyllobothrium latum infections and an observation on the worm tissues affected by the drug].

Paromomycin sulfate (aminosidine) at a single dose of 32 to 53 mg/kg was orally given to 24 cases with proven diphyllobothriasis. Evaluation of efficacy of the drug was based on stool examination for the eggs after 3--4 weeks of treatment. The cure rate was obtained as 96% (23/24), and 30 worms were expelled from 24 patients. Only 1 unsuccessfully treated case of 34-year-old man was retreated at the same dose of the drug 3 weeks later to obtain the cure. Thirty worms were composed of a single worm each from 21 patients, 2 worms from a patient, 3 from 1, and 4 from 1. Scolices of 7 (23.3%) out

Seasonal changes in the prevalence of ova of Diphyllobothrium ursi and Baylisascaris transfuga in the feces of the black bear (Ursus americanus).

An analysis of 114 samples of feces from black bears (Ursus americanus) from La Verendrye Park, Quebec revealed that the prevalence of eggs of Diphyllobothrium ursi and Baylisascaris transfuga varied seasonally. D. ursi ova were most prevalent during the summer and fall and at their lowest in spring while the converse was true for B. transfuga. This phenomenon possibly is associated with the cessation of feeding during the winter denning of black bears.

[Changes in the argyrophil stroma of the liver of fishes infested with the pleurocercoids, Triaenophorus nodulosus and Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoidea, Pseudophyllidae)].

The argentaffine stroma of the liver of some fishes (Perca fluviatilis, Exos lucius, Paracottus kessleri, Coregonus autumnalis migratorius, Thymallus arcticus) is described. The nature and depth of pathological changes in the argentaffine stroma of the liver at its infection with pleurocercoids of pseudophyllids depend on the infection intensity, host's specificity and on the biocoenotic relationships of hydrobionts in a waterbody.

Hematological and plasma biochemical analyses and parasitological detection were carried out in the herring gull Larus argentatus. Hematological and plasma biochemical parameters in uninfected gulls and gulls infected by Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) were compared. Hemoglobin content and numbers of erythrocytes were reduced; numbers of leukocytes and sorption capacity of erythrocytes were improved in blood of the infected herring gulls. Hematological index (eosinophil/lymphocyte ratio) in infected gulls increased 1.8 times in comparison with eosinophil/lymphocyte r

[Hematological and immunological properties of herring gull (Larus argentatus) nestlings experimentally infected with Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidae)].

The morphological structure of the blood in herring gull nestlings and their immune system response to experimental infection with tapeworm Diphyllobothrium dendriticum have been studied. The leukocyte reaction pattern and the dynamics of immunoglobulin synthesis and populations of immunocompetent cells in the blood of nestlings during early invasion indicated a short duration of the cellular immune response and an insignificant humoral immune response. A pronounced trend to decrease in the hemoglobin level in the blood of infected nestlings has been revealed and this reduction was in part com

Use of nuclear and mitochondrial DNA PCR and sequencing for molecular identification of Diphyllobothrium isolates potentially infective for humans.

Tapeworms of the genus Diphyllobothrium (Cobold, 1858) are widely distributed all around the world and some of them are agents of human diphyllobothriasis. Approximately 50 species have been described within the Diphyllobothrium genus but only 13 are human pathogens. Species identification by using morphological criteria is very difficult. We determined the value of 18S ribosomal RNA gene, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI) sequences to differentiate between Diphyllobothrium isolates. Sequences from 18 isolates (larvae or adults) of D. latum, D. nih

Putative Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense acquired from a Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) eaten in France; genomic identification and case report.

We report here a likely case of Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense contracted in France through the consumption of a Pacific salmon imported from Canada. The species diagnosis was made by molecular analysis of two mitochondrial genes (COI & ND3). This case is rather unusual in that D. nihonkaiense has never been reported along the Pacific coast of North America.
