Discrimination and social identity processes predict impairment and dysfunction among heavy drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has linked discrimination to poorer health. Yet health risk behaviours such as heavy alcohol consumption are often targeted with stigmatising public health campaigns. The current study sought to establish the link between experiencing discrimination and health outcomes among heavy drinkers, with a focus on exploring the multiple social identity processes that might underpin this relationship. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 282 people who self-reported consuming alcohol above recommended guidelines. We measured discrimination experienced as a drinker, compon

A systematic review of the voice-tagging hypothesis of speech-in-noise perception.

The voice-tagging hypothesis claims that individuals who better represent pitch information in a speaker's voice, as measured with the frequency following response (FFR), will be better at speech-in-noise perception. The hypothesis has been provided to explain how music training might improve speech-in-noise perception. This paper reviews studies that are relevant to the voice-tagging hypothesis, including studies on musicians and nonmusicians. Most studies on musicians show greater f0 amplitude compared to controls. Most studies on nonmusicians do not show group differences in f0 amplitude. A

Linear mechanisms can produce motion sharpening.

Human observers are not normally conscious of blur from moving objects [Nature 284 (1980) 164]. Several recent reports have even shown that blurred images appear sharper when drifting than when stationary and have suggested different non-linear mechanisms to explain this phenomenon [Vision Res. 36 (1996) 2729; Vision Res. 38 (1998) 2099]. We demonstrate here that even though distortions of drifting narrow-band sine-wave gratings cannot be explained by linear mechanisms, these mechanisms may have an important role in sharpening of moving edges. We show first that the effective spatial filter fo

Sensitivity of pentylenetetrazol discrimination increased by a stimulus fading technique.

The interoceptive stimulus produced by pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) is pharmacologically similar to anxiety and is used in a behavioral assay for anxiety-related stimuli (the PTZ model of anxiety). The stimulus fading technique was tested as a method to increase the sensitivity of this assay. Rats were trained with food-reward to press one lever after injection of PTZ and an alternate lever after saline. Rats initially learned the discrimination at a PTZ dose of 20 mg/kg. They were then trained with sequentially lower doses until they reliably discriminated a PTZ dose of 10 mg/kg. Substitution test

Early stages of tactual matching.

Naive sighted subjects tested under blind conditions were able to match raised dot (Braille letters) patterns relatively accurately by touch, but showed no advantage in judging identical pairs over different pairs of patterns. This was the case also for letters subjects had been taught to name. Instructions to match on name or feel had significant effects, but these did not relate differentially to "same"/"different" judgments. Under visual conditions subjects matched "same" letters faster than "different" letters. Errors in drawing the letters after tactual exposure and naming training showed

Relationship between Everyday Discrimination and Substance Use among Adolescents in Northern Chile.

Substance use is a public health problem that affects the normal physical, neurological, and psychological development of adolescents. Apparently, discrimination is an important variable for explaining the initiation and continued use of alcohol and marijuana. Since most research focused on discrimination based on factors, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender faced by minority groups, studies on discrimination faced by the general population remain scarce. This cross-sectional study described the relationship between everyday discrimination and alcohol and marijuana use-relat

Experiences of discrimination and positive treatment among people who support a person with a mental health condition: a nationally representative survey.

PURPOSE: Stigma and discrimination compound the burden experienced by informal caregivers of people with mental illness, impacting their wellbeing. Prior caregiver stigma research has relied on qualitative or convenience samples, limiting knowledge of groups most affected. This Australian study is the first nationally representative survey of caregiver experiences of discrimination and positive treatment. METHODS: Participants (N = 2,164) were recruited from a probability-based online panel using stratified random sampling and weighting for age, gender, education, and language background. Des

The association between perceived COVID-19-related discrimination and probable depression among pregnant women in the post-pandemic era: a cross-sectional study.

The 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has substantially influenced the physical and psychological wellbeing of populations who survived the pandemic. Discrimination against infected individuals has been a public health concern and has been identified as a risk factor for mental health issues. However, limited empirical evidence is available to support its role in psychological disorders during the prenatal period. The current study aims to investigate the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and the likelihood of experiencing probable depression among women in their early preg

Workplace discrimination and risk of alcohol abuse: a prospective cohort study in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective studies on the link between workplace discrimination and subsequent alcohol abuse remain markedly sparse. We aimed to address this gap and to expand the current evidence base by exploring i) the potential explanatory role of psychological stress and ii) gender differences. METHODS: We included 1097 workers from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study without alcohol abuse at baseline (2004-2006) followed up in 2013-2014. Workplace discrimination at baseline was measured using a validated 6-item instrument and categorized into three levels by tertiles. Alcohol abu

Rumination partially mediates the associations between perceived ethnic discrimination, emotional distress, and aggression.

Research suggests that perceived ethnic discrimination is associated with poor psychological and physiological health. Rumination, or perseverative thoughts about negative experiences, may constitute a maladaptive coping strategy that mediates the associations between perceived discrimination, emotional distress, and aggression. Our sample consisted of 170 ethnic minority and 134 White American participants. For ethnic minority participants, we found a pattern of correlations consistent with rumination partially mediating a causal link between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms,

Grouping in object recognition: the role of a Gestalt law in letter identification.

The Gestalt psychologists reported a set of laws describing how vision groups elements to recognize objects. The Gestalt laws "prescribe for us what we are to recognize 'as one thing'" (Kohler, 1920). Were they right? Does object recognition involve grouping? Tests of the laws of grouping have been favourable, but mostly assessed only detection, not identification, of the compound object. The grouping of elements seen in the detection experiments with lattices and "snakes in the grass" is compelling, but falls far short of the vivid everyday experience of recognizing a familiar, meaningful, na

Drug discrimination and cross generalization between two methylxanthines.

Twenty-one rats were trained to discriminate 32 mg/kg caffeine from saline in a two-lever drug discrimination task (variable ratio) while another ten rats were trained to discriminate 56 mg/kg theophylline from saline. For each group, dose-effect curves (% drug-lever responses and overall response rate) were obtained for both caffeine and theophylline. Significant dose-related generalization of each training drug was found for both the caffeine- and theophylline-trained rats. Concomitant dose-related decreases in overall response rate also were apparent. Similar dose-related effects were seen

Enablers and Barriers Among Women Ophthalmologists: A National Cross-Sectional Survey in Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the self-perceived enablers and barriers among female ophthalmologists practising in health centres nationwide across Saudi Arabia. It also reviews their work-life balance, psychological wellbeing, experience of workplace discrimination, maternity-related challenges, and the personal and institutional factors that facilitate or hinder their professional and maternal roles. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional, face-to-face survey was conducted among female ophthalmologists practising in health centres nationwide across Saudi Arabia over an eight-month period (October 2

Quantity Estimation by Repeated Comparative Judgments.

Many species can discriminate nonsymbolic quantities, but only humans transform such perceptual magnitudes into symbolic numbers and mathematics. The process by which this transformation occurs remains debated. Here, we propose a computational model of human quantity estimation which synthesizes four general concepts established over the history of cognitive science: (1) nonsymbolic quantity representations; (2) a general capacity for comparative judgment; (3) associative memory; and (4) an anchoring-and-adjustment mechanism. We tested model predictions in preregistered experiments where parti

Interocular conflict attracts attention.

During binocular rivalry, perception alternates.between dissimilar images presented dichoptically. Since.its discovery, researchers have debated whether the phenomenon is subject to attentional control. While it is now clear that attentional control over binocular rivalry is possible, the opposite is less evident: Is interocular conflict (i.e., the situation leading to binocular rivalry) able to attract attention? In order to answer this question, we used a change blindness paradigm in which observers looked for salient changes in two alternating frames depicting natural scenes. Each frame cont

Secondary Somatosensory Cortex Is Required for Learning but Not Execution of a Tactile Discrimination.

The relationship between primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortex is not well understood, and the role of S2 in somatosensory function is not well defined. To test the role of S2 and its interplay with S1 in learning a texture discrimination, we reversibly inhibited primary (S1) and/or secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) bilaterally using DREADDs and measured the effect on the ability of mice to learn a whisker-dependent tactile discrimination. Freely moving mice foraged in an arena that contained two bowls, one of which contained a buried food reward. The bowls could only be disti

Effects of psychoactive drugs on temporal discrimination in rats.

Male Wistar rats were trained, in two-lever operant chambers, to press one lever (L5) after the presentation of a conditioned stimulus (a light) for 5 s (CS5) or the other lever (L20) after a conditioned stimulus for 20 s (CS20). Various drugs were administered before experimental sessions, during which CS5, CS20 and a stimulus of the intermediate duration of 12 s (CS12) were randomly presented. Rats pretreated with vehicle made approximately 50% of presses on L5 after the presentation of CS12. Atropine, diazepam, desipramine, clomipramine and moderate doses of haloperidol or of scopolamine in
