Neural responses to induced emotion and response to social threat in intermittent explosive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intermittent explosive disorder (IED) are reported to exhibit amygdala (AMYG) hyper-activation to anger faces during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).  However, it remains unknown if emotional experience is different in study participants with IED compared with healthy controls (HC).  Thus, we examined the comparative effect of pleasant and unpleasant IAPS pictures in IED and HC individuals. METHOD: Eighty study participants (40 IED and 40 HC) underwent fMRI scanning while viewing blocks of angry and happy faces and while viewing blocks of pleasant and

Linking brain activity during sequential gambling to impulse control in Parkinson's disease.

Dopaminergic treatment may impair the ability to suppress impulsive behaviours in patients with Parkinson's disease, triggering impulse control disorders. It is unclear how dopaminergic medication affects the neural networks that contribute to withholding inappropriate actions. To address this question, we mapped task-related brain activity with whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 Tesla in 26 patients with Parkinson's disease. Patients performed a sequential gambling task while being ON and OFF their regular dopaminergic treatment. During a gambling round, patients repeatedl

[Impulsive-compulsive disorders in Parkinson's Disease: influence on individual and social decision-making processes].

AIM: Parkinson's Disease (PD) has been considered for a long time as a neurodegenerative disorder affecting mainly motor functions, because of the involvement of basal ganglia. Recent research has shown that these brain structures have a crucial role even in higher level cognitive and social functions, as executive ones, impulse control and decision-making. METHOD: A research of the peer-reviewed scientific literature was conducted in order to identify articles on the dysfunctions in individual and social decision-making in PD. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: This work provides the reader with a lit

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are frequent side effects of dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) used in Parkinson's disease (PD) with devastating consequences on the patients and caregivers. ICD are behavioural addictions including compulsive gambling, shopping, sexual behaviour, and binge eating that are mainly associated with dopamine D2/D3 agonists. Their management is a real clinical challenge due to the lack of therapeutic alternative. Clinical studies have identified demographic and clinical risk factors for ICD such as younger age at disease onset, male gender, prior history of depressi

The imperative of integrating empirical and theoretical considerations when developing policy responses to Internet-gaming disorder.

This commentary proposes an integrative approach of theoretical and empirical considerations when developing policy responses to Internet-gaming disorder and when evaluating their efficacy. It complements the overview by Király et al. (2018) about preventive and treatment programs by referring to a lack of inclusion of internal factors, such as individual aspects and cognitions, and missing empirical evidence. This commentary claims the integration of current research addressing individual predisposing and maintaining factors in order to evaluate existing programs and to enhance the exchange b

Policy and prevention efforts for gaming should consider a broad perspective.

Internet gaming disorder is gaining attention around the world. Some efforts have been directed toward preventing gaming problems from developing or persisting, but few approaches have been empirically evaluated. No known effective prevention intervention exists. Reviewing the broader field of prevention research should help research and best practices move forward in abating problems that arise from excessive gaming.

Subtypes of aggression in intermittent explosive disorder.

Research in aggression has distinguished two major subtypes of aggressive behavior: hostile and instrumental. Previous research has examined these subtypes in healthy individuals and forensic samples but not in intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder characterized by recurrent and severe aggressive behavior. We examined aggression subtypes in individuals with IED, healthy subjects, and psychiatric control subjects. We also considered the relationship between aggression subtypes and measures of trait anger and impulsivity to evaluate whether the hostile/instrumental dichotomy adequate

Partial dopamine agonist-induced pathological gambling and impulse-control deficit on low-dose aripiprazole.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of aripiprazole-induced problem gambling and impulse-control deficit in a gambling-naïve patient following commencement of low-dose aripiprazole. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: This case adds to the literature on the dopamine partial agonist aripiprazole causing or exacerbating problem gambling, and extends that literature to low-dose use of aripiprazole in the gambling naïve. CONCLUSIONS: When commencing a patient on aripiprazole the possibility of emergence of problem gambling and other impulse-control deficits should be monitored, even in those with no histor

[Predictors and modifiers of impulse control disorders in Parkinson`s disease].

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), including compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating, are a serious and increasingly recognized psychiatric complication in Parkinson's disease (PD). ICDs have been most closely related to the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), perhaps more so at higher doses. Possible predictor's for ICDs include male sex, younger age and younger age at PD onset, use of dopaminergic agents. Modifiers of ICDs are pharmacological (medication) and non-pharmacological (surgical, behavioral) treatments.

[Not Available].

Although dopamine replacement therapy has been used in Parkinson's disease since the 1960s, it is only recently that behavioral disorders associated with these drugs have been described. Gathered under the term "behavioral addiction", they include impulse control disorders, dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS), and punding. Whereas addiction per se occurs almost exclusively with levodopa, impulse control disorders appear preferentially during dopamine agonist therapy. The prevalence of these disorders is estimated to be 10-17% in Parkinson's disease, a rate far higher than in the general popu

Impulse control and criminal responsibility: lessons from neuroscience.

Almost all of the world's legal systems recognize the "M'Naghten" exception to criminal responsibility: the inability to appreciate the wrongfulness of action. This exception rests on the assumption that punishment is morally justified only if the defendant was able to choose whether to do wrong. Jurists and jurisdictions differ, however, on whether to extend M'Naghten's logic to cases where the defendant understood the wrongfulness of an act but was incapable of resisting an impulse to commit it. In this article I ask whether contemporary neuroscience can help lawmakers to decide whether to a

Drug-induced impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Dopamine replacement treatment with excessive or aberrant dopamine receptor stimulation can cause behavioral disturbances in Parkinson's disease, comprising dopamine dysregulation syndrome, punding, and impulse control disorders. Common impulse control disorders are compulsive buying, pathological gambling, binge eating, hypersexuality, and compulsive reckless driving.

[Impulse control disorders and Parkinson's disease].

A variety of behavioral disorders occurring abruptly in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recently published and attracted considerable attention in the press. Taking the form of pathological gambling, compulsive shopping, addiction to Internet and to other recreational activities, hypersexuality or bulimia, impulse control disorders (ICD) related to PD are probably more frequent than previously appreciated and may have consequences as spectacular as disastrous for the involved patients. ICD are currently viewed as particular adverse reactions to antiparkinsonian medications, not

Compulsive aspects of impulse-control disorders.

Impulsivity and compulsivity have been considered opposite poles of a continuous spectrum, but their relationship seems to be more complex. Disorders characterized by impulsivity often have features of compulsivity and vice-versa. Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are characterized by repetitive behaviors and impaired inhibition of these behaviors, suggesting a similarity to the frequently excessive, unnecessary, and unwanted rituals of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There are, however, important differences be-tween ICDs and OCD. The construct of compulsivity as related to ICDs and OCD w

Medical approaches to gambling issues--II: The medical response.

Gambling behaviors cover a spectrum from an enjoyable benign form of social entertainment to a disabling and potentially lethal medical condition. A companion paper, Medical Approaches to Gambling Issues--I: The Medical Condition, provides a literature review of gambling in its pathological and nonpathological forms. Physicians encounter patients who gamble, patients who have a treatable disorder of pathological gambling and family members of problem and pathological gamblers. This paper is intended to aid practicing physicians in their care of their patients who gamble and experience problems
