Whence river blindness? The domestication of mammals and host-parasite co-evolution in the nematode genus Onchocerca.

The genus Onchocerca includes 34 described species and represents one of the largest genera of the filarial nematodes within the family Onch … of co-evolutionary scenarios between Onchocerca and their vertebrate hosts underline the effect of domestication on Onchocerca speciation. Our study indicates that a host switch event occurred between Bovidae, Canidae and humans. Cophylogenetic analyses between Onchocerca and the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia indicate the strongest co-evolutionary pattern …

Mitogenome Insights Into the Domestication and Phylogeography of Zebu Cattle: A Focus on Pakistani Breeds and Asian Lineages.

Zebu cattle (Bos indicus) represent a critical livestock resource in the arid and semi-arid regions, known for their disease resistance, heat tolerance and physiological hardiness. Despite their agricultural importance, the precise matrilineal evolutionary history, genetic diversity and demographic trajectory remain incompletely resolved within the broader context of South Asian cattle domestication. This study explores the phylogeographic patterns and maternal lineage diversity of zebu cattle through complete mitochondrial genomes (mtDNA), the D-loop, and hypervariable regions from 50 individ…

Investigation of naked oat (Avena sativa ssp. nuda) domestication provides insights into yield and nutritional gaps in oats.

Oats are valuable for global food and forage security due to their excellent nutrition and polyploidy. Cultivated oats (Avena sativa L.) are … iverge from the Central and Eastern Eurasian hulled oats 6124 generations ago and undergo secondary domestication in North China under strong artificial selection. Multi-environment phenotyping of 19 traits from 2010 to 2021 reveals that hulled oats outperform in grain size and yield, while naked oats have higher crude protein (+25.5%) and crude fat (+16.9%). G …

[Advances in automated enrichment and directed domestication technologies and their applications in the development of environmental functional microorganisms].

Environmental functional microorganisms play a key role in environmental engineering processes such as pollutant degradation, wastewater treatment, and resource utilization. Conventional enrichment and directed domestication technologies often have limitations such as long operational cycles and low throughput, being difficult to meet the demands for rapid screening, enhancement, and engineering application of functional microorganisms under complex environmental conditions. In recent years, advances in continuous cultivation, high-throughput cultivation, microfluidic chips, intelligent biorea…

Domestication Enhances the Plastic Response of Root Economic Traits to Soil Variation in the Perennial Crop Cnidoscolus aconitifolius.

Domestication-driven shifts toward resource acquisition are well-documented above ground, but how it impacts belowground strategies remains controversial. Furthermore, the role of environmental variation and phenotypic plasticity in shaping root economic space traits has been largely neglected. Here, the effects of domestication, soil origin, and their interaction on four root economic traits (average root diameter, specific root length, root tissue density, and root nitrogen content) were experimentally assessed using wild and domesticated chaya (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) grown in forest, ho…

Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Mechanisms Underlying Adaptive Differentiation of Black Soldier Fly Larvae Induced by Regional Food Waste Domestication.

Black soldier flies (Hermetia illucens) are widely used in organic waste bioconversion, and their adaptive capacity to region-specific food waste is critical for efficient application. This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptation of black soldier fly larvae to long-term domestication on regional food waste from Kunming and Qujing. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses were performed to identify differences in gene expression and metabolite profiles between the two groups of larvae. The results showed significant divergence in gene expression netwo…

Genetic Architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits using a population derived from Sorghum virgatum and Sorghum bicolor.

The genetic basis of domestication and improvement remains largely unknown in sorghum as a typical multiple-origins species. In this study, the F2 and F3 populations derived from a cross between Sorghum virgatum and domesticated sorghum were used to study the genetic architecture of domestication- and improvement-related traits. We found that human selection had greatly reshaped sorghum through the Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) with large genetic effects in the traits of harvest, plant architecture and grain taste including the reduction of shattering, few branches, short plant stature and th…

A narrative review on allergy and exposure to domestic and non-domestic animals: favorable and unfavorable effects.

The aim of this contribution was to highlight the "favorable" and "unfavorable" roles of domestic and non-domestic animals on airway sensitization processes and on the type/severity of the clinical symptoms induced by their exposure. We performed a literature research in MEDLINE for allergic manifestations and animals. Pets can be "allergy friends" through mechanisms related to hygiene hypothesis and translational aspects, the dual role of IgG4 antibodies for pets, and their promising role as healthcare service animals (dogs). On the contrary, animals can be "allergy enemies" when inducing all

Extrinsic allergic alveolitis in domestic environments (Domestic allergic alveolitis) caused by mouldy tapestry.

Extrinsic allergic alveolitis often occures as bird fancier's lung or is caused by occupational treatment with antigenic materials. In housing environments antigens of allergic alveolitis are also found, especially mould fungi. lf a source of antigens is absent in the anamnesis and the clinical picture as well as the clinical findings are ambiguous, the diagnosis of extrinsic allergic alveolits is delayed or unobtained. The following example shows that in spite of a detailed allergic anamnesis the source of antigens may remain occult and only an inspection of the dwelling rooms leads to an elu

Beyond domestication: The unexpected contribution of native Musa wild relatives to cultivated banana diversity in Mainland Southeast Asia.

The diversity of cultivated bananas remains partially unknown, whereas cultivars with suitable adaptive traits could address the drastically increasing biotic and abiotic constraints on banana production. This partial knowledge also impacts our understanding of domestication processes, although replicating these processes is an endorsed strategy for banana varietal improvement. To address this gap, 91 specimens were collected during a collecting mission across northern Vietnam, northern Laos, and China's Yunnan region, an underexplored area at the northern limit of the Musa natural range. Nati…

Domestication-associated reduction of methyl salicylate in tomato root and its significance for resistance to root-knot nematode.

Methyl salicylate (MeSA) plays diverse roles in the aerial parts of plants. By contrast, its biosynthesis and function in roots remain poorl … luated using transgenic plants. MeSA was identified as a major root volatile in tomato and showed a domestication-associated reduction. GWAS revealed multiple loci associated with natural variation in root MeSA, including a major locus on Chromosome 9 encoding the salicylic acid methyltransferase (SlSAMT). SlSAMT-overexpressing plants showed reduced resistance …

Domestication constrains the ability of dogs to convey emotions via facial expressions in comparison to their wolf ancestors.

Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are the domestically bred descendant of wolves (Canis lupus). However, selective breeding has profoundly altered facial morphologies of dogs compared to their wolf ancestors. We demonstrate that these morphological differences limit the abilities of dogs to successfully produce the same affective facial expressions as wolves. We decoded facial movements of captive wolves during social interactions involving nine separate affective states. We used linear discriminant analyses to predict affective states based on combinations of facial movements. The resulting confu

Molecules, Mechanisms, and Disorders of Self-Domestication: Keys for Understanding Emotional and Social Communication from an Evolutionary Perspective.

The neural crest hypothesis states that the phenotypic features of the domestication syndrome are due to a reduced number or disruption of neural crest cells (NCCs) migration, as these cells differentiate at their final destinations and proliferate into different tissues whose activity is reduced by domestication. Comparing the phenotypic characteristics of modern and prehistoric man, it is clear that during their recent evolutionary past, humans also went through a process of self-domestication with a simultaneous prolongation of the period of socialization. This has led to the development of…

A novel hepadnavirus in domestic dogs.

Hepadnaviruses have been identified in several animal species. The hepadnavirus prototype, human hepatitis B virus (HBV), is a major public health problem associated with chronic liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recently, a novel hepadnavirus, similar to HBV, was identified in domestic cats. Since several pathogens can be shared between cats and dogs, we hypothesized that dogs could also harbor hepadnaviruses and we tested a collection of canine sera with multiple molecular strategies. Overall, hepadnavirus DNA was identified in 6.3% (40/635) of canine serum samples, although the v

Dracunculiasis in a domestic dog in Brazil.

We report and discuss the surprising encounter of a dog naturally infected by Dracunculus sp. in Brazil, a brief clinical history of the animal and a procedure for removing the nematode. We also present details on the morphology of the fragments collected from the nematode and a phylogenetic comparison of the partial sequences of the mitochondrial 18S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes, deposited with others in GenBank. The samples were an independent lineage forming a well-supported monophyletic assemblage with D. medinensis. We thus conclude that this species has not yet bee

Laparoscopic Ovariectomy in a Domestic Yak.

Owners of a juvenile domestic yak elected bilateral ovariectomy to prevent future reproduction. The yak was noted to be healthy at presentation. Both ovaries were removed using a laparoscopic approach as follows: after induction and maintenance of general inhalant anesthesia, 15 degrees Trendelenburg positioning was required to view the ovaries. Ovariectomy was conducted within a surgical time of 50 minutes. Due to the small ovarian size, portal enlargement was not necessary for removal. Mild hemorrhage from the left ovarian pedicle was controlled with application of a vessel-sealing device. P

Schistosome Vaccines for Domestic Animals.

Schistosomiasis is recognized as a tropical disease of considerable public health importance, but domestic livestock infections due to Schistosoma japonicum, S. bovis, S. mattheei and S. curassoni are often overlooked causes of significant animal morbidity and mortality in Asia and Africa. In addition, whereas schistosomiasis japonica is recognized as an important zoonosis in China and the Philippines, reports of viable schistosome hybrids between animal livestock species and S. haematobium point to an underappreciated zoonotic component of transmission in Africa as well. Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking.

Commercial sexual exploitation of children and child sex trafficking is a major public health issue globally. Domestic minor sex trafficking has become increasingly recognized within the United States. Sexually exploited minors are commonly identified as having psychosocial risk factors, including histories of abuse or neglect, running away, substance use or abuse, and involvement with child protective services. Youth also suffer a variety of physical and mental health consequences, including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Child psychiatrists and other med
