National surveillance of poultry diseases in Lebanon.

From 1992 to mid-1996, a national survey of poultry diseases in Lebanon was conducted. This surveillance included meat breeder, layer breeder, commercial layer and chicken broiler flocks. The history, signs, lesions and laboratory tests of poultry were used in the diagnosis of prevalent poultry diseases. Culture techniques were used to screen for bacterial diseases; serological techniques and, to a lesser extent, culture techniques were used to diagnose viral diseases; and both serological and culture techniques were used to diagnose Mycoplasma infections. The outbreaks of diseases detected in

[Primary neurogenic and myogenic disorders of posture].

Disturbance of posture may occur in a variety of neurological disorders and occasionally is the presenting or even the only sign. In the majority of cases, the head or the trunk or both are bent forward (bent spine syndrome, dropped head syndrome). A feature of these primary neurogenic or myogenic postural disturbances that is in contrast to antalgic contraction or ankylosis is that they are not fixed, but the trunk or head are easily erected by the examiner and show a characteristic sagging. Neuromuscular disorders are a frequent cause. They may be confined to the paraspinal muscles. Axial co…

Surgery in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Corpus callosum division for children.

A tonic or "drop" attacks--often seen in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome--are some of the most feared childhood seizures, since they may lead to head injuries. Corpus callosum division will often control atonic seizures, and other types of generalized seizure.

Hand, foot, and spine deformities in parkinsonian disorders.

Hand and foot deformities, known as "striatal deformities", and other musculoskeletal abnormalities such as dropped head, bent spine, camptocormia, scoliosis and Pisa syndrome, are poorly understood and often misdiagnosed features of Parkinson's disease and other parkinsonian syndromes. These deformities share some similarities with known rheumatologic conditions and can be wrongly diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, or other rheumatologic or orthopedic conditions. Neurologists, rheumatologists, and other physicians m

Occurrence of the ear-mite Raillietia auris in cattle in Austria.

We describe here the first documented case in Austria of the cattle ear mite Raillietia auris in a four-year-old dairy cow. The cow was mildly depressed, and keratoconjunctivitis was diagnosed in both eyes with Horner's syndrome in the left eye. The animal showed a mild head tilt to the left and a generalized ataxia with a tendency to move to the right side, which became exacerbated if the animal was blind-folded. Head pressing to the right side, dysphagia and a dropped jaw were also observed. Numerous rather mobile ear mites were observed at necropsy in the basal part of the left ear canal. T

Isolated Neck Extensor Myopathy Associated With Cervical Spondylosis: A Case Report and Brief Review.

Dropped head syndrome (DHS) is manifested as the inability to maintain the head in an upright posture. It has been associated with a wide spectrum of myopathies and neurological conditions. Isolated neck extensor myopathy (INEM) is one of many potential causes of DHS. This is a case report of a 72-year-old man who presented with degenerative cervical spondylosis and DHS for 2 years. He had previously failed to achieve a positive outcome to medication, cervical collar and exercise rehabilitation. However, he was able to regain his voluntary head control after a 4-month chiropractic program. It …

Predominant Neck Extensor Muscle Weakness: A Rare Manifestation of Idiopathic Polymyositis.

Dropped head syndrome (DHS) is a rare disease. It can be an isolated phenomenon or secondary to an underlying inflammatory, genetic, or sporadic neuromuscular disease. Idiopathic polymyositis as an underlying cause of DHS is rare and this association has been described very few times in the literature. We describe a case of biopsy-proven polymyositis presenting with predominant neck extensor muscle weakness. This case report goes further into analyzing the biomechanics of neck extension and putative reasons for predilection of the neck extensor muscles with advancing age in patients with DHS w

FUS as a cause of familial Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a case report in a pregnant patient.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease. In 10% the disease is familial and rarely occurs in childbearing age women. A 28-year-old female pregnancy patient presented a two-month history of dropped head syndrome, dysphagia, muscle weakness, atrophy, and lingual wasting. Electromyography supported the diagnosis of ALS. Due to family history and background, we carried out molecular genetic testing. We identified a novel variant of uncertain significance: c. 1566 G > C (p.Arg522Ser) in exon 15 in FUS gene. Our findings provide the first case of ALS onset during pregnancy…

Myopathies presenting with head drop: Clinical spectrum and treatment outcomes.

Dropped head syndrome can be the presenting feature of a wide spectrum of neurological conditions. In this study, we aimed to define the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of 107 patients, where head drop was the presenting or predominant clinical feature of a myopathy. Median age at presentation was 68 years (range 42-88). A specific diagnosis was reached in 53% of patients: Inflammatory myopathy (n = 16), myopathy with rimmed vacuoles (n = 10), radiation-induced myopathy (n = 8), sporadic late-onset nemaline myopathy (n = 7), myofibrillar myopathy (n = 4), facioscapulohumeral dy…

[Radiation-Induced Radiculopathy with Paresis of the Neck and Autochthonous Back Muscles with Additional Myopathy].

Radiation-induced tissue damage is caused by ionizing radiation mainly affecting the skin, vascular, neuronal or muscle tissue. Early damages occur within weeks and months while late damages may occur months or even decades after radiation.Radiation-induced paresis of the spine or the trunk muscles with camptocormia or dropped-head syndrome are rare but have already been described as long-term sequelae after treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma. The differential diagnosis includes limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, fascioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) or lysosomal storage diseases (e. g. Aci

Anti-MuSK Antibody-positive Myasthenia Gravis Mimicking Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

We herein investigated the clinical features of three patients with anti-muscle-specific tyrosine kinase (MuSK) antibody-positive myasthenia gravis (MG), which was initially difficult to distinguish from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The patients exhibited dropped head syndrome or dysphagia as initial symptoms. Although their clinical findings were compatible with the revised El Escorial Criteria for ALS, their progression appeared to be more rapid than that of ALS. Both the edrophonium and repetitive nerve stimulation tests yielded negative results, and diurnal fluctuation was not conf…

[Concordance between a head circumference growth function and intellectual disability in relation with the cause of microcephaly].

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to investigate the correlations between patterns of head growth and intellectual disability among distinct aetiological presentations of microcephaly. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 3,269 head circumference (HC) charts of patients from a tertiary neuropediatric unit were reviewed and 136 microcephalic participants selected. Using the Z-scores of registered HC measurements we defined the variables: HC Minimum, HC Drop and HC Catch-up. We classified patients according to the presence or absence of intellectual disability (IQ below 71) and according to the cause of microcephaly

[Abnormal posture of the trunk related to donepezil hydrochloride: report of 2 cases].

Patient 1, an 80-year-old woman with Alzheimer's disease, had been taking donepezil 5 mg for 2 years. Donepezil was increased to 10 mg, and 2 months later, the patient developed dropped head syndrome. MRI and needle EMG abnormality of the neck extensor muscles suggested focal myopathy, but the symptom disappeared within 2 months by discontinuing donepezil. Patient 2, a 78-year-old man with Lewy body dementia, had been taking levodopa and pramipexole (PPX). One month after tapering levodopa, donepezil 3 mg was introduced, and Pisa syndrome (bending of the trunk to the right anterior direction) …

Computed tomographic features of canine intracranial and jugular foraminal masses involving the combined glossopharyngeal, vagus, and accessory nerve roots.

A chronic cough, gag, or retch is a common presenting clinical complaint in dogs. Those refractory to conservative management frequently undergo further diagnostic tests to investigate the cause, including CT examination of their head, neck, and thorax for detailed morphological assessment of their respiratory and upper gastrointestinal tract. This case series describes five patients with CT characteristics consistent with an intracranial and jugular foraminal mass of the combined glossopharyngeal (IX), vagus (X), and accessory (XI) cranial nerves and secondary features consistent with their p

Treatment of severe late onset Perthes' disease with soft tissue release and articulated hip distraction: early results.

Sixteen children with late onset Perthes' disease were surgically treated at an average age of 12 years 1 month (9 years 4 months to 15 years) by soft tissue release and articulated hip distraction. Two patients had additional diagnosis of Down syndrome and one suffered from geleophysic epiphyseal dysplasia. Fifteen hips were graded Catterall IV and Herring C and one hip was graded Catterall III Herring B. On preoperative arthrograms, 14 patients had a saddle-shape subluxating femoral head with hinge abduction. The distraction discontinued when Shenton line was corrected. The fixation lasted 4

FUS mutations in Asian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients: a case report and literature review of genotype-phenotype correlations.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive weakness and muscular atrophy in the upper or lower limbs, ultimately leading to paralysis and death. Genetic studies have demonstrated that mutation in the gene encoding fused in sarcoma (FUS) is an uncommon cause of ALS. Here, we report a case of a 31-year-old Asian man with ALS with rare onset of dropped-head syndrome. Symptoms, including asymmetric proximal weakness of the upper limbs, hoarseness, dysphagia, and nocturnal dyspnea, emerged over a period of 5 months. After genetic testing, t

Global Sagittal Spinal Compensation for Dropped Head Alignment.

STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective radiographic study of a consecutive series of cases in patients with dropped head syndrome (DHS) at a single tertiary referral center. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to clarify the compensation among parameters of spinal sagittal alignment in patients with DHS. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The treatment strategy for DHS should vary according to the types of global sagittal spinal alignment. However, theoretical evidence in consideration of spinal sagittal compensation against the dropped head condition is lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred sixteen patie…

Proteus syndrome with sciatic nerve fibrolipomatous hamartoma: an uncommon finding in a rare disease: report of two cases with literature review.

Proteus syndrome is an extremely rare condition, characterized by progressive asymmetric overgrowth of multiple body tissues. Here, we present two cases of Proteus syndrome demonstrating typical clinical and radiological features of Proteus syndrome, in addition to an uncommon fibrolipomatous hamartoma of the sciatic nerve. The first case is a 5-year-old girl who presented with seizures. The patient showed facial dysmorphic features, left head enlargement, kyphoscoliosis, asymmetric overgrowth of the right lower limb, right foot drop, and cribriform connective tissue nevi on the right palm and
