Erosive duodenitis is a clinical entity whose pathogenesis is still obscure. Acid secretion is mostly normal, while the possible role of vascular factors has been suggested. We measured mucosal blood flow by means of laser Doppler velocimetry during endoscopy in the duodenal bulb of 10 subjects with erosive duodenitis, 10 duodenal ulcer patients, and 10 healthy controls. Fifty patients who presented with symptoms suggestive of disease related to peptic acidity having endoscopic evidence of duodenitis were analysed. Endoscopic duodenal biopsy was done in all these patients. Histologically duodenitis was labelled if there was infiltration of epithelial layer. Male to female ratio was found to be 3:2. There is much controversy regarding the chronic nonspecific duodenitis as autonomous clinical entity. Controversy exists as to whether or not duodenitis alone can cause peptic ulcer symptoms. A modified provocation perfusion test has been performed in 10 symptomatic patients with duodenitis confirmed by endoscopy and histology. Cell renewal in the duodenal mucosa of Mastomys was studied by autoradiography 1 and 24 h after intraperitoneal injection of tritiated thymidine.
