Reading and writing difficulties do not always occur as the researcher expects.

Making a prognosis about reading and learning difficulties is a tricky business, even if a large array of relevant variables is taken into account. The present article discusses such an endeavour, on the basis of a longitudinal four-year study which started with an orthodox intervention on linguistic awareness. However, after initial success, new groups of reading, writing and math disabled children were identified in the course of years. Membership of these groups could not always be predicted on the basis of extensive cognitive diagnostics performed during the preschool. Rather, the pupil's

Culturally safe family-centered early intervention services: perspectives from parents and service providers of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.

This study explores the characteristics of cultural safety in Family-Centered Early Intervention services for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families (FCEI-DHH). Perspectives of culturally and ethnically diverse families who have young DHH children and service providers in pediatric DHH services were gathered through online surveys. Quantitative analyses examined the influence of geographical location and parent self-identity (Deaf, Indigenous, racialized, marginalized (DIRM), and/or belonging to a dominant/privileged group) on aspects of FCEI services. Parents reported a high o

Empirically-Derived Effect Size Distributions of Interventions for Young Children on the Autism Spectrum.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to present a set of empirically derived effect size distributions to provide field-based benchmarks for interpreting the observed effects of interventions for young children on the autism spectrum, and for planning future studies. METHOD: We generated effect size distributions and reported quartile values for each by outcome domain, and by boundedness, proximity, and assessment approach using 1552 effect sizes from 144 early childhood autism intervention studies gathered for a previously published meta-analysis. RESULTS: Quartile values represent consi

Policy and Practice Barriers to Early Identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder in the California Early Intervention System.

Autism spectrum disorder can be reliably diagnosed prior to age 2, and early, intensive intervention has been found to improve long-term outcomes. Nonetheless, most children with ASD do not receive a diagnosis until after age 3, with even later diagnoses for children from non-white ethnic groups. This study conducted telephone surveys with California Part C early intervention managers regarding policies and practices for early identification and intervention for ASD. Findings indicated that 85% of agencies conduct screening for ASD, but only 39% conduct ASD diagnostic assessments prior to age

Pre-treatment clinical and gene expression patterns predict developmental change in early intervention in autism.

Early detection and intervention are believed to be key to facilitating better outcomes in children with autism, yet the impact of age at treatment start on the outcome is poorly understood. While clinical traits such as language ability have been shown to predict treatment outcome, whether or not and how information at the genomic level can predict treatment outcome is unknown. Leveraging a cohort of toddlers with autism who all received the same standardized intervention at a very young age and provided a blood sample, here we find that very early treatment engagement (i.e., <24 months) lead

Metacognitive Strategies.

This study assessed the effect of metacognitive instruction on the spelling and word reading of Hebrew-speaking children with specific language impairment (SLI). Participants were 67 kindergarteners with SLI in a supported learning context. Children were classified into three spelling instruction groups: (a) metalinguistic instruction (ML), (b) ML that integrates metacognitive strategies (MCML), and (c) a control group. Letter naming, letter sounding, word spelling, and word recognition were assessed at pretest and posttest. Findings from spelling and reading tests as well as interviews indica

Sleep problems and early developmental delay: implications for early intervention programs.

Sleep disorders negatively impact behavior, cognition, and growth--the same areas targeted by early intervention. Conversely, developmental delays and disabilities may themselves precipitate sleep disorders. Young children with developmental delays experience sleep disorders at a higher rate than do typically developing children; the most common types are difficulties initiating or maintaining sleep and sleep disordered breathing. To date, attention has been focused on sleep problems in children with specific conditions (e.g., autism, genetic syndromes, prematurity, and seizure disorder). The

Can early interventions alter the course of autism?

Interventions for autism have come a long way since the condition was described by Kanner in the 1940s. At that time, autism was considered to be closely linked to schizophrenia, and inadequate parenting was viewed as the principal cause. Psychoanalysis was often the therapy of choice, but there was also widespread use of the drugs and even electroconvulsive treatments that had been developed for use in schizophrenia. Over the years, as autism has come to be recognized as a developmental disorder, interventions have focused instead on enhancing developmental skills and on ways of ameliorating

Beyond the shutdown: Tracking language growth in Early Head Start children before, during, and after COVID-19.

Understanding early language outcomes for low-income children in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic is an important concern for researchers, policymakers, and educators. We examined language environments and language development among infants and toddlers in Early Head Start from pre-COVID, through the pandemic peak and beyond to 2025. Study children were aged 2-43 months (N = 2,763; 47% girls; 42% Hispanic of any race; 46% Black or African American, non-Hispanic; 6% White, non-Hispanic; 4% multiracial or biracial, non-Hispanic; 3% other race or unspecified, non-Hispanic). Using technology to support children with dyscalculia in pre-primary and primary school: insights, challenges and opportunities.

PURPOSE: Developmental Dyscalculia (DD) is a specific neurodevelopmental learning disability that significantly impairs an individual's ability to learn and process mathematical concepts. Given that preschool and primary school years represent critical windows for early intervention, this article aims to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art review of current assistive technology applications designed to support children with DD during this foundational educational period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study systematically examines the landscape of current technological interventions and cla

Research Review: Conceptualizing and measuring 'problem behavior' in early intervention autism research - a project AIM secondary systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Some autistic children exhibit behavior that caregivers, clinicians, and researchers consider problematic. However, there is little consensus about the types of behaviors that should be treated as a problem and reduced via intervention. In autism intervention research, problem behaviors range from inherently harmful behaviors such as aggression and self-injury to nonnormative but not harmful behaviors associated with autism such as repetitive movements. Likewise, there are a variety of conceptualizations and measurement practices used to assess these behaviors. METHODS: In this se

Dental Caries in Children: An Update.

Dental caries, also known as cavities, are the most prevalent dental problem in children. The etiology is mostly multifactorial and a result of an imbalance between the constant mineralization and demineralization on the tooth surface. It is important to assess oral health risks, counsel caregivers, and encourage oral hygiene. Recent guidelines by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) underscore the evolving role of the pediatrician in initiating early dental health interventions.

Development of an App for Tracking Family Engagement With Early Intervention Services: Focus Groups and Pilot Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Expedient access to early intervention (EI) systems has been identified as a priority for children with developmental delays, identified disabilities, and other special health care needs. Despite the mandated availability of EI, it remains challenging for families to navigate referral processes and establish appropriate services. Such challenges disproportionately affect families from traditionally underserved communities. Mobile health apps can improve clinical outcomes, increase accessibility to health services, and promote adherence to health-related interventions. Though promis

BMI Data Collection and Communication Practices in a Multistate Sample of Head Start Programs.

Background: Although there is a federal mandate to collect anthropometric data in Head Start (HS), little is currently known about the processes used to collect the height and weight measurements across programs and how the results are communicated to parents/guardians. The goal of this study was to understand anthropometric data collection and dissemination procedures in a sample of HS programs serving children 3-5 years. Methods: A convenience sample of HS Health or Nutrition managers were recruited via personal contacts and HS state directors to complete an electronic survey. Quantitative d

Take Flight: the evolution of an Orton Gillingham-based curriculum.

Thirty years ago in this journal, Aylett Royall Cox reported on the development of Alphabetic Phonics, a revision of the existing Orton Gillingham treatment for children with dyslexia. This paper continues that discussion and reports on the evolution of that curriculum as it is represented in a comprehensive dyslexia treatment program informed by intervention research. The paper describes the curriculum and reports data from a hospital-based learning disabilities clinic that provides qualified support for treatment efficacy and the value of added comprehension instruction. The results are then
