Exercise and smoking: health rivals revealing shared protective mechanisms in Parkinson's?

Compelling epidemiological evidence suggests that exercise and smoking are modifiable risk factors that are linked to a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease. These two risk factors represent opposite ends of a spectrum: exercise is universally embraced, while smoking is rightly eschewed for its established adverse health effects. Yet, intriguingly, preclinical evidence suggests that at their biological cores, exercise and some of the many components of tobacco may share strikingly similar working mechanisms that may favorably modify PD risk or disease course, for which definitive evidence is st

Distributed lag interaction model with index modification.

Epidemiological evidence supports an association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and birth and child health outcomes. Typically, such associations are estimated by regressing an outcome on daily or weekly measures of exposure during pregnancy using a distributed lag model. However, these associations may be modified by multiple factors. We propose a distributed lag interaction model with index modification that allows for effect modification of a functional predictor by a weighted average of multiple modifiers. Our model allows for simultaneous estimation of modifier index w

Developments in identifying and managing mucormycosis in hematologic cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION: Mucormycoses represent a rare but very aggressive class of mold infections occurring in patients with hematological malignancies (HMs). In the past, patients at high risk of invasive mucomycosis (IM) were those affected by acute myeloid leukemia but over the last ten years the prophylaxis with a very effective mold-active drug, such as posaconazole, has completely modified the epidemiology. In fact, IM is now observed more frequently in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders who do not receive antifungal prophylaxis. AREAS COVERED: The attention was focused on the epidemiol

Community Assets as Protective Factors Buffering Health Effects of Environmental Hazards: Framework and Considerations for Environmental Epidemiologists.

Disparities in the adverse health effects due to ambient environmental exposures have long been documented in the environmental epidemiology literature. A growing body of environmental epidemiology literature has focused on how detrimental aspects of the physical environment (e.g., poor housing quality) and social environment (e.g., chronic social stressors) can exacerbate the adverse health effects of environmental exposures (e.g., air pollution, heat). However, the literature on protective factors which might mitigate adverse health effects of environmental exposure is more limited. We borro

Risk characterization for silica-related silicosis and lung cancer in communities adjacent to sand and gravel extraction facilities: examining limitations in our current risk methods.

INTRODUCTION: Effectively managing and reducing occupational exposure to crystalline silica continues to be a critical priority for public health agencies. The relationship between workplace inhalation exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) and the onset of silicosis is well known. The body of evidence has shaped the evolution and promulgation of specific standards for the assessment and control of workplace RCS exposures. However, ongoing health effects research continues to explore the impacts of the physical and chemical forms of crystalline silica and the potential of RCS to cause

A systematic review and meta-analysis of risk factors associated with atopic dermatitis in Asia.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder characterised by intense itch and eczematous lesions. Rising prevalence of AD has been observed worldwide including in Asia. Understanding the risk factors associated with AD may explain its pathogenicity and identify new preventive strategies and treatments. However, AD-associated risk factors and comorbidities specific to Asia have not been systematically reviewed. METHODS: We performed a systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and

Evaluation of the modified Baermann's method in the laboratory diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis.

This study compares the modified Baermann's method with the formol-ether concentration and the direct/saline techniques in the diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis larvae in stool specimens. This study was conducted at Wonji-Shewa Sugar Estate located at about 110 kms. south east of Addis Abeba. Of the 718 randomly selected and examined stool specimens, 125 were found positive for Strongyloides stercoralis. Of these 98% were recovered by the modified Baermann's method, 23% by the formol-ether, and 22% by the direct saline techniques. The rate of recovery by the modified Baermann's method was

[Immunization against malaria].

Malaria is a great endemic infectious disease, as well as HIV and tuberculosis, responsible world-wide for millions of deaths every year, especially in children. Despite vector control intensification, significant epidemiological improvement and arrival of new and effective antimalarials, malaria remains a major public health issue. The development of a vaccine is still a public health priority because it would considerably modify malaria epidemiology in a relatively near future if associated with vector control and improvement of diagnosis and treatment, in the sixties, several studies have a

Cardiovascular disease and air pollutants: evaluating and improving epidemiological data implicating traffic exposure.

Evidence suggests that traffic-related pollutants play a role in the observed associations between air pollution and adverse cardiovascular health effects. The contribution of traffic to individual exposures is difficult to quantify in traditional epidemiological studies, however, and researchers have employed various approaches in attempt to isolate its effects. Many investigators have employed ambient measurements such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, or black carbon as surrogates for traffic in studying associations with health outcomes. Source-apportionment techniques also have been us

Alcohol and breast cancer. Where are we now and where do we go from here?

The alcohol-breast cancer hypothesis is important because (1) breast cancer is a major source of morbidity and mortality, (2) alcohol consumption is common, and (3) drinking is modifiable. Reports from more than 50 epidemiologic investigations of this hypothesis have now appeared. A recent metaanalysis of these studies indicates both a modest positive association between alcohol and breast cancer (an approximately 25% increase in risk with daily intake of the equivalent of two drinks) and a dose-response relation. Data suggest that risk increases with consumption of alcohol in general, regardl

Epidemiological modifiers of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Focus on high-risk groups.

An improved understanding of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease epidemiology would lead to identification of individuals at high risk of developing chronic liver disease and extra-hepatic complications, thus contributing to more effective case finding of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among selected groups. We aimed to illustrate the epidemiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in high-risk groups, which were identified based on existing literature. To this end, PubMed was searched to retrieve original articles published until May 2015 using relevant and pertinent keywords "nonalcoholic

Breast cancer risk factors. Contributions to planning breast cancer control.

The analytic epidemiology of breast cancer has identified several risk factors that may be the bases for developing preventive interventions and refining screening guidelines. Breast cancer risk factors include both personal and environmental sources of risk. The available data, however, do not yet support the feasibility of large scale preventive interventions. Controlled trials will be needed to assess the effectiveness of those approaches. Knowledge of risk factors may be used by physicians to tailor their recommendations for individual patients. Risk factor data also may be used to modify

Advances in the management of alcohol-associated liver disease.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a significant global health challenge, encompassing a spectrum from steatotic liver disease to cirrhosis and alcohol-associated hepatitis, and contributed to 25% of global cirrhosis deaths in 2019. The identification of both modifiable (e.g. heavy drinking, metabolic syndromes) and non-modifiable risk factors (e.g. genetic predispositions) is crucial for effective disease management. Alcohol use assessment and treatment, by using both behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapeutic modalities, nutrition support, and optimization of liver disease modifiers,

Treatment of cryptosporidiosis: do we know what we think we know?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The management of cryptosporidiosis is fraught with controversies. New research on diagnostics and medications has reached the field in recent years. Therefore, familiarity with key features of current management tools is important. We discuss diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of cryptosporidiosis focusing on evidence behind the medications available to date. RECENT FINDINGS: Molecular methods provide a clearer understanding of cryptosporidiosis epidemiology. The major determinants of severity still are host immune status and parasite species. Children and immunosuppressed

The randomized, controlled ATLANTIS trial of aquatic therapy for chronic venous insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: There are conflicting reports on the efficacy of exercise in chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Exercise in water or aquatic activity (AA) can have additional advantages. We sought to evaluate the clinical effects of AA in CVI in a randomized prospective open label fashion. METHODS: A total of 201 patients with advanced CVI were randomized to receive AA vs no such treatment. In the Aquatic Group (AG), 91 patients reached the 24-month follow-up point, and in the Control Group (CG), 90 patients did. The primary efficacy end point was a predefined reduction of ≥4 points in the modifi

[Epidemiologic review of long-term, low-level exposure to environmental chemicals and cardiovascular disease: an exposure-response relationship].

The effects of exposure to environmental chemicals, such as heavy metals and fine particulates, on cardiovascular diseases have been reported. To set a permissible exposure standard, an exposure-response relationship should be elucidated. Thus, epidemiologic evidence in relation to long-term, low-level exposure to environmental chemicals (i.e., lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, PM(2.5), carbon disulfide) was reviewed. As a result, there exists a clear exposure-response relationship between exposure to lead or PM(2.5) and cardiovascular diseases, but those cohort studies were carried out in the

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Female Reproductive Aging.

Female reproductive aging often affects women's emotional, physical, and physiological well-being. Ovarian aging is characterized by fluctuations in reproductive hormones and determines the age at which menopause occurs. Understanding potentially modifiable factors that influence this process is essential for addressing health disparities, improving quality of life, and informing relevant public health strategies. This review synthesizes in vivo, in vitro, and epidemiological findings about the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically heavy metals and perfluoroalkyl and p
