Treatment of spinal spasticity by electrical stimulation.

We present the results and the methodology of trials using transcutaneous electrical stimulation. The aim of our work was to decrease spasticity in 44 patients with traumatic damage to the spinal cord; 35 non-electrically stimulated spastics were used as controls. Both groups were randomly selected from inpatients in the Paraplegic Department at the Hospital Rehabilitation Centre. This electrical stimulation procedure leads to a long-lasting reduction in spasticity, an increased range of passive and active movements, the facilitation of lost functions, an improvement in breathing, an increase

Electrical stimulation to promote the union of fractures.

The object of this study was to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation on recent fractures and in established nonunion, using an electrical stimulator of my own design. Fresh osteotomies of the fibula in rabbits were treated with a direct current of 20 microA; there was no reduction of healing time. Then, 62 patients with various types of nonunion, all of more than 9 months duration, were treated. They included patients with osteomyelitis (30%), atrophic (67%) and hypertrophic (33%) nonunion. Electrical stimulation alone was used in 34 patients but 30 needed additional operative trea

Effect of electrical stimulation on veal quality.

In three experiments involving a total of eighty-eight veal calves raised in groups and with access to straw, plasma hemoglobin (Hb) levels were determined at one week ante mortem. In each experiment, animals with similar Hb levels were paired. One animal of each pair was stimulated electrically (ES) post mortem whereas the other remained non-stimulated (NS). ES resulted in a more rapid pH fall in longissimus and semi-membranosus muscle. Carcass lean colour scores were improved at 24h, but not at 40 min, post mortem. At 24h post mortem longissimus muscle from ES carcasses showed a brighter col

AUDITORY NERVE: ELECTRICAL STIMULATION IN MAN.

Auditory perceptions produced in a person deaf to acoustic stimulation were studied by electrically exciting the auditory nerve through permanently implanted electrodes. Pulsed current as small as 1 microampere peak-to-peak could be perceived. Pitch, as reported by the subject, varied with electrode selection, current amplitude, and pulse repetition rate from about 70 to at least 300 pulses per second. Loudness increased with amplitude and duration of pulse stimuli, and to a lesser extent with repetition rate. The total range in amplitude of the stimulus, from threshold to an uncomfortable lou

[Research progress on transcranial electrical stimulation for deep brain stimulation].

Transcranial electric stimulation (TES) is a non-invasive, economical, and well-tolerated neuromodulation technique. However, traditional TES is a whole-brain stimulation with a small current, which cannot satisfy the need for effectively focused stimulation of deep brain areas in clinical treatment. With the deepening of the clinical application of TES, researchers have constantly investigated new methods for deeper, more intense, and more focused stimulation, especially multi-electrode stimulation represented by high-precision TES and temporal interference stimulation. This paper reviews the…

Frequency Following Responses to Electric Cochlear Stimulation in an Animal Model.

PURPOSE: Present-day cochlear-implant (CI) users can achieve high levels of speech reception in quiet surroundings. Nevertheless, sensitivity to the temporal pitch of sounds is limited, which contributes to deficits in speech reception amid multiple talkers and in appreciation of musical melodies. Short-term, invasive neurophysiological studies in animals have demonstrated limitations in neural phase locking in the tonotopic range of the auditory pathway that is activated by CIs. It remains an open question, however, whether those neural limitations can account for perceptual deficits in those

Transcranial Electrical Stimulation generates electric fields in deep human brain structures.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) efficiency is related to the electric field (EF) magnitude delivered on the target. Very few studies (n = 4) have estimated the in-vivo intracerebral electric fields in humans. They have relied mainly on electrocorticographic recordings, which require a craniotomy impacting EF distribution, and did not investigate deep brain structures. OBJECTIVE: To measure the electric field in deep brain structures during TES in humans in-vivo. Additionally, to investigate the effects of TES frequencies, intensities, and montages on the intracerebral EF

Effects of Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation on Upper Extremity Proprioceptive Function.

Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve has been shown to enhance cortical plasticity and may benefit upper extremity rehabilitation following stroke. As an initial step towards assessing the potential of other craniocervical nerves as neuromodulation targets during rehabilitation, we explored the ability of non-invasive stimulation of cervical spine afferents, paired with a proprioceptive discrimination task, to improve sensory function in neurologically intact human subjects. On each trial, subjects' arms were moved by a robot from a test position, along a random path, to a judgment positi

Towards precise brain stimulation: Is electric field simulation related to neuromodulation?

BACKGROUND: Recent research on neural and behavioral consequences of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has highlighted the impact of individual factors, such as brain anatomy which determines current field distribution and may thus significantly impact stimulation effects. Computational modeling approaches may significantly advance our understanding of such factors, but the association of simulation-based tDCS-induced fields and neurophysiological outcomes has not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: To provide empirical evidence for the relationship between tDCS-induced neurophysiolog

Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery for perilymphatic fistula after electric acoustic stimulation.

Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES) will become a very useful therapeutic option. A perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is defined as sudden sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo caused by leakage of the perilymph through a fistula from the oval window and/or round window. We report a case of PLF after electric acoustic stimulation (EAS), a kind of cochlear implant, successfully treated by TEES. A 38-year-old man presented to our hospital with vertigo and hearing loss (HL). His vertigo was induced by Valsalva maneuvers. Eight months ago, he underwent EAS for his right ear for congenital senso

Tinnitus treatment with precise and optimal electric stimulation: opportunities and challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Electric stimulation is a potent means of neuromodulation that has been used to restore hearing and minimize tremor, but its application on tinnitus symptoms has been limited. We examine recent evidence to identify the knowledge gaps in the use of electric stimulation for tinnitus treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies using electric stimulation to suppress tinnitus in humans are categorized according to their points of attacks. First, noninvasive, direct current stimulation uses an active electrode in the ear canal, tympanic membrane, or temporal scalp. Second, inner e…

Comparison of electric field modeling pipelines for transcranial direct current stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Electric field modeling utilizes structural brain magnetic resonance images (MRI) to model the electric field induced by non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in a given individual. Electric field modeling is being integrated with clinical outcomes to improve understanding of inter-individual variability in tDCS effects and to optimize tDCS parameters, thereby enhancing the predictability of clinical effects. The successful integration of modeling in clinical use will primarily be driven by choice of tools and procedures implemented in computational modeling.
