Natural or intended mummification? Specific case of a child mummy.

The aim of this work was to document and analyze an exceptionally preserved mummified body of a six-year-old boy found in a family tomb in S … y and arsenic, and the body was assessed by a forensic examiner for possible signs of an artificial embalming, and pathology. We did not confirm the hypothesis of the eventual preservation using the salts of mercury and/or arsenic or other fixation common for embalming in the 1800s. The anthropogenic mummification can be excluded due to the presence of fly …

A comparison of dry needle placement accuracy rates between two approaches targeting the gluteus medius osteotendinous junction in cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of two dry needling (DN) techniques in embalmed cadavers that are commonly used to target the gluteus medius osteotendinous junction (OTJ). METHODS: Seven embalmed cadaveric specimens were placed in prone. Technique 1 used a needle insertion point that was measured 2 fingerbreadths superior and 3 fingerbreadths posteromedial to the greater trochanter (GT) apex using the donor's fingerbreadths. The needle insertion point for technique 2 involved locating a line between the GT apex and the sacro-coccygeal hiatus and estimating one

A comparison of 1- versus 3-month regional anatomy exposure on learning outcomes of undergraduate medical students.

Regional anatomy teaching forms a cornerstone of undergraduate medical education. Owing to an increase in teaching and learning content thro … 65 vs. 54%), and abdomen (65 vs. 45%), respectively. Further evaluation of the utility of different embalming types yielded higher 3-month scores in the neck and thorax regions with Thiel-embalmed tissues and thorax and abdomen regions in ethanol-glycerin-embalmed tissues. Course exposure over a more extended period, like three months, appears to be highly …

A Cadaveric Evaluation of Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) describes a pathologic state in which the subaortic region of the interventricular septum und … ed that histologic examination of embalmed tissue is effective and diagnostic, even 11 months after embalming. The report herein demonstrates that morphologic and histologic analysis of cadaveric cardiac tissue is sufficient to support a diagnosis of HOCM. To the researchers' knowledge, this is the first case report evaluating HOCM in a cadaver donated for …

In vitro biomechanical evaluation of fibular movement in below knee amputations.

BACKGROUND: In below knee amputations, the remaining fibula may be subjected to abnormal forces resulting in problematic tibia-fibular movem … osseous membrane below knee amputations. Furthermore, although embalmed specimens were tested here, embalming was consistent across specimens and it is unlikely that this confounded the findings. INTERPRETATION: Understanding the cause of fibular abduction in below knee amputation will lead to recommendations for preventive surgical and rehabilitative meas …

Subarachnoid space of the optic nerve sheath and intracranial hypertension: a macroscopic, light and electron microscopic study.

PURPOSE: The optic nerve (ON) is an extension of the central nervous system via the optic canal to the orbital cavity. It is accompanied by meninges whose arachnoid layer is in continuity with that of the chiasmatic cistern. This arachnoid layer is extended along the ON, delimiting a subarachnoid space (SAS) around the ON. Not all forms of chronic intracranial hypertension (ICH) present papilledema. The latter is sometimes asymmetric, unilateral, or absent. The radiological signs of optic nerve sheath (ONS) dilation, in magnetic resonance imaging, are inconsistent or difficult to interpret. Th

The risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease infection in cadaveric surgical training.

The usefulness of cadaver surgical training in the clinical field is already well known. In Japan, the number of universities introducing cadaver surgical training is increasing. In addition to formalin fixation, various fixation methods are used, such as the Thiel method, saturated salt solution method, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone method, and fresh-frozen cadavers. Although protection against infections during fixation and cadaver surgical training has been implemented in most universities, it is currently inadequate. Furthermore, the possibility of undiagnosed infectious diseases in donors cannot

Aortic inflation with agar injection is a useful method of cadaveric preparation which creates a mediastinal anatomy that better mimics the living body for surgical training.

In cadavers, even Thiel-embalmed cadavers, the arteries (especially the thoracic aorta) are extremely collapsed. This is in marked contrast to the state of the arteries in a living body. Aortic inflation is necessary to improve this unfavorable situation for anatomical observation or dissection. To inflate the aorta, we injected 500 ml of hot liquid agar into the aorta using a 18-Fr catheter inserted into the common femoral artery and subclavian artery. The injected agar then rapidly cools to room temperature and solidifies. As a result, the thoracic aorta remains sufficiently and constantly i

Does gender influence learning, perceptions and retention in regional anatomy dissection courses?

Medical educators should understand the differences within the medical student population, including gender. Research on gender effects on l … ge retention was evaluated at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Finally, student perceptions of different embalming methods for anatomy learning were assessed with a focus on gender. Minor differences were observed between genders across different regions in learning gains. Scores from the 3-month course were higher than those from the 1-month course, regardless …

Contact dermatitis in funeral service workers.

84 funeral service workers and 38 control workers were evaluated for the presence of skin disease by history, clinical examination and patch tests with formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. No relationship between either personal or family history of cutaneous or respiratory manifestations of atopy and clinical parameters of cutaneous disease or patch test results was found. Cutaneous disease was reported in apprentices, active embalmers and inactive embalmers in decreasing order of frequency. Positive patch test reactions to formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde were found in 4% and 7% of the exposed wo

Prehispanic (Guanches) mummies and natrium salts in burial caves of Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife).

The prehispanic population of Tenerife (Guanches) buried their dead in caves. Many corpses are totally or partially mummified. Embalming procedures are largely unknown, besides some information recorded by chroniclers and the general idea that environmental conditions in some areas may favour natural mummification. Detailed observation of burial caves containing mummified corpses revealed the presence of a white mineral in form of crusts or powder that was not present in the vast majority of non-burial caves, especially in basaltic and trachybasaltic lava flows. We analysed these crusts and th…

The mechanical properties of fresh versus fresh/frozen and preserved (Thiel and Formalin) long head of biceps tendons: A cadaveric investigation.

Human cadaveric specimens commonly serve as mechanical models and as biological tissue donors in basic biomechanical research. Although these models are used to explain both in vitro and in vivo behavior, the question still remains whether the specimens employed reflect the normal in vivo situation. The mechanical properties of fresh-frozen or preserved cadavers may differ, and whether they can be used to reliably investigate pathology could be debated. The purpose of this study was to therefore examine the mechanical properties of cadaveric long biceps tendons, comparing fresh (n=7) with fres

Can indoor plants reduce formaldehyde levels in the anatomy dissection hall? A study to evaluate the practicality of using plants in reducing formaldehyde levels.

BACKGROUND: Formaldehyde a commonly used embalming fluid for the preservation of cadavers, produces numerous short and long-term side effects on the students and staff working with it. Indoor plants have been shown to reduce atmospheric formaldehyde levels. The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of indoor plants in reducing formaldehyde levels in ambient air to levels deemed safe by WHO standards. METHODS: The study was conducted in the storage room of the Anatomical dissection hall. 7 potted plants of one variety were kept in the storage room for 14 days and the Formaldehyde re…

Exploring alternatives for securing anatomical structures in capturing digital images: A comparative analysis.

Teaching veterinary anatomy using digital platforms requires improved image quality, which may influence the fixation process. This study aimed to compare four embalming solutions for high-colour-quality images of different tissues compared to the original image. Four equine left pelvic limbs were cut into metameres and divided equally for application of 10% formaldehyde, 96% glycerine, 33% hypersaturated NaCl solution and modified Larssen solution, respectively, which was maintained for 3 days. After drying for 3 days at room temperature, photographs were obtained at time 0 (T0), without any …

UV-C Irradiation Reduces the Experimentally Induced Bacterial Load on the Surface of a Human Cadaver: An Additional Option for the Preservation of Cadavers in Anatomy.

Safety is a major issue in the embalming procedures of human cadavers. Reduced application of formaldehyde is often recommended. The aim of this study was to investigate the potency of ultraviolet light (UV-C irradiation) on the bacterial load on the surface of a conserved human cadaver. To test UV-C irradiation, the cadaver was laid out in the dissection hall and, after preparation of the muscles, was covered with linen sheets moistened with water. Swabs of the surface and microbiological analysis revealed sporadic bacterial colonies. The surface area was then spiked with bacteria and irradia…

[The death of Ignatius Loyola].

A recent examination of a bilioportal fistula led us to suspect a link between this case and the death of Ignatius of Loyola. Realdo Colombo, professor of anatomy, eviscerated Ignatius prior to his embalming In his book De re anatomica, published in 1559, he wrote that he extracted stones from the portal vein of the venerable Ignatius. Before his death, Ignatius suffered from epigastric pain and fever (Monumenta historica societatis Jesu). Colombo latin text is difficult to interpret and the data are meager. Other possible causes of Ignatius' death include gastroduodenal ulcer, tuberculosis an…

Two fatal cases of selenium toxicity.

Two patients, a 36-year-old female and a 36-year-old male, separately experienced new onset nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness and pallor. Over a period of 14-16 h these symptoms continue and progress to include hypotension refractory to therapy, pulmonary edema and cardiovascular collapse. Autopsies show hemorrhagic pulmonary edema, splenomegaly and lack of anatomical cause for sudden death. Postmortem analysis, in one case post-embalming and exhumation, revealed elevated selenium concentrations and a determination of the cause of death. These two cases present severa…
