Patient visits to the primary care physician are prompted most often by an infectious disease. The clinician must be aware of the common and serious infections present in the community and must institute proper diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Diagnosis and treatment of streptococcal infections, staphylococcal infections, pneumonia and upper respiratory tract infection, bone and joint infections, sinusitis, clostridial infections, and tetanus are discussed.

In clinical oncology emergency situations are either manifestations of the underlying disease or effects of the treatment. The successful treatment of emergency situations is not only important in diseases in which cure is possible. It contributes also essentially to an optimal palliation for not curable disease states in oncology. Some special examples from the point of view of internal medicine are briefly discussed.

The more pronounced a so called polypathia is present in the aged, the earlier, the more often and/or the more severe is the tendency that an acute disease develops to an emergency situation to which it never would become per se. Pathophysiological aspects of outstanding importance for treating or preventing such emergency situations are discussed.
