Frequency and perceived influence of menopausal symptoms on training and performance in female endurance athletes.

Menopause is associated with several negative health concerns and common menopausal symptoms. Physical activity is essential to mitigate these negative effects, but menopausal symptoms may interfere with participation in physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and the perceived negative effect of menopausal symptoms among female endurance athletes. Female runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes 40-60 years of age were recruited (N = 187). Participants completed an online, anonymous survey that included self-reported menopausal status; the Menopausal Rat

Influence of oral contraceptive phase on cardiorespiratory response to exercise in endurance-trained athletes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyse the cardiorespiratory response to exercise during an oral contraceptive (OC) cycle in endurance-trained women. METHODS: Sixteen low-dose monophasic OC pill (OCP) users performed an interval-running protocol. The protocol consisted of eight 3 min bouts at 85% of participants' maximal aerobic speed (vV̇o2peak) with a 90s recovery at 30% vV̇o2peak in two OC phases: a withdrawal phase (WP) and an active pill phase (APP). The non-parametric Wilcoxon test was applied to analyse differences (p < 0.05) in performance variables between OC cycle phases. R

The TRPM4 channel is functionally important for the beneficial cardiac remodeling induced by endurance training.

Cardiac hypertrophy (CH) is an adaptive process that exists in two distinct forms and allows the heart to adequately respond to an organism' … the TRPM4 channel is involved in the physiological CH process. We evaluated the effects of 4 weeks endurance training on the hearts of Trpm4 +/+ and Trpm4 -/- mice. We identified an elevated functional expression of the TRPM4 channel in cardiomyocytes after endurance training suggesting a potential role for the channel in physiological CH. We then observed that Trp …

Adaptation of the respiratory controller contributes to the attenuation of exercise hyperpnea in endurance-trained athletes.

We have reported that minute ventilation [[Formula: see text]] and end-tidal CO(2) tension [[Formula: see text]] are determined by the interaction between central controller and peripheral plant properties. During exercise, the controller curve shifts upward with unchanged central chemoreflex threshold to compensate for the plant curve shift accompanying increased metabolism. This effectively stabilizes [Formula: see text] within the normal range at the expense of exercise hyperpnea. In the present study, we investigated how endurance-trained athletes reduce this exercise hyperpnea. Nine exerc

Renal function in endurance trained volunteers during prolonged restriction of muscular activity.

It has been demonstrated that changes in the functional status of the kidneys are basically responsible for the impaired fluid-electrolyte metabolism in physically healthy volunteers during hypokinesia (decreased number of walking steps/day). Thus, the objective of this investigation was to determine the functional changes of the kidneys of 20 endurance trained male volunteers aged 23 to 26 years with an average maximum oxygen uptake 65 ml.kg-1.min-1 during 364 days of hypokinesia (HK). All volunteers were on 14.6 km/day (10,000 running steps/day) prior to their exposure to HK. All volunteers

Endurance-trained and untrained skeletal muscle bioenergetics observed with magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Resting and submaximal isometric exercise 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was carried out on 7 endurance-trained males (26.0 +/- 3 yrs) and 7 sedentary males (27.0 +/- 4 yrs). Spectral analysis provided peak areas of phosphocreatine (PCr), inorganic phosphate (Pi), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and the chemical shift of Pi relative to PCr. The ratio of PCr/Pi was moderately lower during rest (preexercise p = .13, postexercise p = .18), and significantly higher during exercise (p < .05) in the trained subjects. Intracellular pH patterns were the same for both groups; a transient alkal

Sex differences in dynamic cerebral autoregulation responses to resistance and endurance training in humans.

Exercise maintains brain health and reduces the risk of cerebrovascular diseases, such as stroke and dementia. The benefits of different 'modalities' of exercise on male and female cerebral autoregulation are unclear. In this study, we compared adaptations in dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) during spontaneous and forced oscillations in blood pressure between males and females following endurance (END) and resistance (RES) training. Using a randomized cross-over design, 49 healthy adults were recruited to participate in 3 months of END and RES training, with 3 months of washout. Middle ce

Normoxic brain endurance training is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxia.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxia can impair processing speed and visual search. In this exploratory non-randomised controlled study, we examined whether normoxic brain endurance training (BET) is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxic exposure. METHODS: Thirteen adults (7 females) completed a 6-week BET programme, while 23 separately recruited control participants (10 females) did not. Both groups were tested under normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen, FiO2 = 0.14, simulated 3,200 m). Participants performed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), visual search …

Perspectives on Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training in Healthy Adult Females: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Both strength and endurance training are included in global exercise recommendations and are the main components of training programs for competitive sports. While an abundance of research has been published regarding concurrent strength and endurance training, only a small portion of this research has been conducted in females or has addressed their unique physiological circumstances (e.g., hormonal profiles related to menstrual cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, and hormonal contraceptive use), which may influence training responses and adaptations. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to co…

Putative Role of Respiratory Muscle Training to Improve Endurance Performance in Hypoxia: A Review.

Respiratory/inspiratory muscle training (RMT/IMT) has been proposed to improve the endurance performance of athletes in normoxia. In recent years, due to the increased use of hypoxic training method among athletes, the RMT applicability has also been tested as a method to minimize adverse effects since hyperventilation may cause respiratory muscle fatigue during prolonged exercise in hypoxia. We performed a review in order to determine factors potentially affecting the change in endurance performance in hypoxia after RMT in healthy subjects. A comprehensive search was done in the electronic da

Endurance training restores spatially distinct cardiac mitochondrial function and myocardial contractility in ovariectomized rats.

We previously demonstrated that the loss of female hormones induces cardiac and mitochondrial dysfunction in the female heart. Here, we show the impact of endurance training for twelve weeks, a nonpharmacological therapy against cardiovascular disease caused by ovariectomy and its contribution to cardiac contractility, mitochondrial quality control, bioenergetics and oxidative damage. We found that ovariectomy induced cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction by decreasing SERCA2 and increasing phospholamban protein expression. Endurance training restored myocardial contractility, SERCA2 levels, inc…
