Social Justice as a Tool to Eliminate Inequities in Kidney Disease.

Kidney disease has disparate effects on racial and ethnic minority groups, who have higher rates of chronic kidney disease and generally poorer outcomes. These disparate rates and outcomes have been attributed to social determinants of health; however, these social determinants of health are related to governmental and societal structural barriers that have created inequities not only in kidney disease, but also in other chronic diseases and in maternal/fetal health outcomes. The societal barriers to health equity include income inequality, inadequate education, environmental injustice, mass i

Early-Life exposure to environmental pollutants and endocrine disruptors: emerging risks and mechanistic insights in maternal, fetal, and child health.

Exposure to environmental pollutants and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in early life is a critical public health issue because it ca … entive measures, and policy frameworks, highlighting the importance of life-course perspectives and environmental justice. To identify important windows of susceptibility, improve risk assessment, and develop strategies to safeguard maternal and child health, exposomics in conjunction with systems biology and longitudinal epidemiological approaches will be essential.

Predicting asthma prevalence across US communities by integrating social vulnerability and environmental risk with machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, disproportionately affecting racial and ethnic minorit … public health responses. METHODS: We used the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2022 Environmental Justice Index, which includes standardized social and environmental measures at the census tract level. K-means clustering identified geographic clusters with varying asthma prevalence based on asthma rates and related health outcomes. A random forest model …

Tire-Derived Microplastics as Chemically Complex Environmental Contaminants: Mechanistic Pathways, Exposure Gradients, and Implications for Environmental Health.

Tire-derived microplastics (TWPs) are now recognized as one of the largest and most persistent sources of environmental micro- and nanoplast … tal gradients in TWP exposure-especially in high-traffic urban settings-are examined in relation to environmental justice and cumulative risk. Collectively, the evidence indicates that TWPs function as biologically active environmental contaminants capable of engaging multiple mechanistic pathways associated with inflammation, vascular dysfunction, and systemic stress …

The sleep justice study - a prospective cohort study assessing sleep as a cardiometabolic risk factor after incarceration: a protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 11 million individuals are released from U.S. jails and prisons each year. Individuals with a history of incarceration have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and mortality compared to the general population, especially in the weeks following release from carceral facilities. Healthy sleep, associated with cardiovascular health, is an underexplored factor in the epidemiology of CVD in this population. Incarcerated people may have unique individual, environmental, and institutional policy-level reasons for being sleep deficient. The social and physical

A scalable climate health justice assessment model.

This paper introduces a scalable "climate health justice" model for assessing and projecting incidence, treatment costs, and sociospatial disparities for diseases with well-documented climate change linkages. The model is designed to employ low-cost secondary data, and it is rooted in a perspective that merges normative environmental justice concerns with theoretical grounding in health inequalities. Since the model employs International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) disease codes, it is transferable to other contexts, appropriate for use across sp…

Beyond the body: Social, structural, and environmental infertility.

Infertility is often thought of as a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. However, as fertility rates rapidly decline worldwide, we observe that the inability to conceive and have children stems not only from anatomical, physiological, or genetic conditions within the body but also from social, structural, and environmental conditions in society. Drawing on a wide array of international and interdisciplinary scholarship, this article rethinks infertility by focusing on

Local Economic Conditions Affect Aedes albopictus Management.

Invasive mosquitoes are an emerging public health issue, as many species are competent vectors for pathogens. We assessed how multiple environmental and socio-economic factors affected the engagement of municipalities in Italy (n = 7679) in actions against Aedes albopictus, an invasive mosquito affecting human health and well-being, between 2000 and 2020. We collected information about mosquito control from official documents and municipal websites and modeled the role played by multiple environmental and socioeconomic factors characterizing each municipality through the random forest algorith

Climate change-related weather emergencies, aging and inequalities among racialized older adults: An intersectional climate justice framework informed scoping review.

As global aging accelerates alongside intensifying climate disruptions, older adults face growing exposure to extreme weather events that threaten their health and well-being. Yet, the experiences of racialized older adults, categorized as those who are non-White or non-Indigenous who often inhabit the intersection of social and ecological shaped by social marginalization, economic disadvantage, and other factors remain insufficiently understood. Guided by an Intersectional Climate Justice lens, this scoping review examined how racialized older adults across diverse contexts experience and res

Recommendations for Clinicians to Combat Environmental Disparities in Pediatric Asthma: A Review.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Asthma is a common and complex lung disease in children, with disproportionally higher prevalence and related adverse outcomes among children in racial and ethnic minority groups and of lower socioeconomic position. Environmental factors, including unhealthy housing and school-based exposures, can contribute to increased asthma morbidity and widening disparities. This underscores a significant environmental justice issue and suggests the need for clinical interventions to reduce sources of environmental exposures and ultimately diminish the observed disparities in childhood a…

Deconstructing Trauma: How Military Experiences Affect Veteran Prison Misconduct.

Military veterans may exhibit a multitude of criminogenic risk factors that can result in contact with the criminal justice system. These include mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, antisocial cognitions, family or marital dysfunction, homelessness, and unemployment. Although prior research has examined these risks as they correspond to arrest, court processing, or incarceration, far fewer studies have investigated the context of veterans’ service histories inside prisons or how they relate to institutional infractions and misconduct. Further specificity into the continuity of mal

Invisible Hands Behind Clean Hands: Procurement Justice, Materiality, and Nursing Praxis.

Nursing ethics has long taken the bedside encounter as the moral center of practice. Yet this focus becomes incomplete when the material conditions of care are treated as ethically external to nursing itself. Ordinary clinical supplies such as gloves, masks, gowns, syringes, drapes, and linens are commonly understood as neutral instruments of safe and competent care. This paper argues that such neutrality is philosophically misleading. The materials through which nursing is enacted are embedded in global systems of labor, extraction, manufacture, circulation, use, and disposal that may involve

Identifying individual and environmental predictors of opioid and psychostimulant use among adolescents and young adults following outpatient treatment.

BACKGROUND: The United States (US) continues to grapple with a drug overdose crisis. While opioids remain the main driver of overdose deaths, deaths involving psychostimulants such as methamphetamine are increasing with and without opioid involvement. Recent treatment admission data reflect overdose fatality trends suggesting greater psychostimulant use, both alone and in combination with opioids. Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable with generational trends showing that these populations have particularly high relapse rates following treatment. METHODS: We assessed demogr

[Action-research in artisanal fishing communities affected by the oil spill crime disaster].

The aim of this article is to describe the experience of researchers in applying action research as a methodological tool in territories of artisanal fishing affected by the oil disaster that occurred in 2019 on the Northeast coast of Brazil. This is a critical-reflective hermeneutic study, based on the analysis of researchers' experiences reports, and field diaries developed during research activities conducted between 2021 and 2023. Immersing oneself in reality and territorializing knowledge beyond an epistemic matter contributes to the dialogical process in territories, strengthening aspect

Mining and malaria in the Brazilian Amazon and in the Yanomami indigenous land.

Illegal mining expanded in the Brazilian Amazon since 2018, leading to increases in malaria among indigenous populations, particularly the Yanomami. We describe the temporal and spatial pattern of malaria and mining in indigenous lands and quantify the impact of mining on malaria among the Yanomami. We estimate that a 1% increase in the annual mining area was associated with a 24% (95% CrI: 17%, 32%) increase in monthly malaria cases in the Yanomami. Also, malaria cases in 2022 in the Yanomami were likely underreported by 83%, and an estimated excess of 102,870 malaria cases occurred from 2018

Care, not incarceration: exploring the carcerality of fisheries enforcement and potential decolonial futures in Hawai'i.

Current U.S. environmental management paradigms default to enforcement mechanisms that feed into the prison industrial complex, such as fines and jailing. To avoid contributing to and reinforcing mass incarceration and militarism, environmental management systems need to be transformed towards non-carceral forms. Additionally, working towards Indigenous sovereignty and decolonization, requires the strengthening of Indigenous relations with and governance over the land under the respective paradigms of Indigenous communities. This paper uses Hawai'i state fisheries law and programmatic efforts
