[Bacterial vaginosis. Epidemiology and risk factors].

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a change in vaginal ecosystem where lactobacilli dominate, flora is absent or greatly reduced, and replaced with a mixed, predominantly anaerobic flora, consisting of Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, Mobiluncus spp, Bacteroides spp, Prevotela spp, Peptostreptococcus spp, Fusobacterium spp and Porphyromonas spp. The concentration of bacteria increases from 100 to 1000 fold in women with BV compared to healthy women. BV has been formerly known as nonspecific vaginitis, Haemophilus vaginitis, Corynebacterium vaginitis, Gardnerella vaginitis and anaerobic vagi

Immunity as a factor in the epidemiology of medieval plague.

The rise, disappearance, and demography of medieval plague remain mysterious. This paper reviews those features of plague immunity in animals and humans that might help explain these aspects of medieval plague. The absence of a focus of sylvatic plague in medieval Europe is postulated, while it is suggested that the susceptible population was much more varied both in terms of immunity and number of species than has been assumed. The sex, age, and regional variations in incidence of plague among humans are examined on the basis of primary and secondary historical sources. Nutritional factors, e

The role of temperature factors in the epidemiology of listeriosis.

A total of 5000 samples were examined for Listeria monocytogenes, and 117 strains had been isolated. Out of these, 36 strains were selected according to their low virulence. An increasing virulence could be observed, when they were cultured on optimal media at 4 degrees C, with inoculations at every third week. This increased virulence caused by temperature factors, can have an important role in the epidemiology of listeriosis.

[Social factors in the epidemiology of intestinal infections].

Epidemiological regularities of individual intestinal infections--morbidity dynamics, the spread along the territory among the urban and rural population, seasonality--were conditioned not only by biological peculairities of the causative agents, but also but the influence of the social factors on the formation of the epidemic process.

Epidemiology of cardiovascular risk factors: Non-behavioural risk factors.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and the second leading cause in France. Among the modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, metabolic diseases (hypertension, low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterolaemia, diabetes and obesity) play a major role, contributing to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. This review summarizes the latest epidemiological data available at a national level. In 2015, the prevalence among adults aged 18-74years was 17.2% for obesity, 7.4% for diabetes, 30.6% for hypertension, 23.3% for low-density lipoprotein hypercholesterola

Evaluation of Epidemiologic Factors, Radiographic Features, and Pathologic Findings for Predicting Peritumoral Brain Edema in Meningiomas.

BACKGROUND: Despite several treatment options that are available for meningiomas, surgery is the only method currently practiced. Peritumoral brain edema (PTBE) in meningiomas causes difficulty marginalizing the dissection in an intraoperative setting. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the epidemiological variables, imaging characteristics, and pathologic parameters are correlated with the presence of PTBE in meningiomas. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective study from 2015 to 2018. SUBJECTS: In all, 550 patients with histopathologically confirmed meningioma were included. After exclusion of patients with

Independent Predictive Factors of Hospitalization in a North-West Burn Center of Iran; an Epidemiologic Study.

INTRODUCTION: A high-grade burn is one of the most devastating injuries with several medical, social, economic, and psychological effects. These injuries are the most common cause of accidental deaths after traffic injuries in both the developed and developing countries. Therefore, this research was aimed to determine demographic characteristics of patients with burn injury admitted to the emergency department and identify predictive factors of hospitalization. METHODS: This is a cross sectional descriptive study, which is done in 20 March up to 20 September 2011 in emergency department of Si

Association of mammographically defined percent breast density with epidemiologic risk factors for breast cancer (United States).

OBJECTIVE: Mammographically defined percent breast density is an important risk factor for breast cancer, but the epidemiology of this trait is poorly understood. Although several studies have investigated the associations between reproductive factors and density, few data are available on the associations of breast density and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), physical activity, education, alcohol and smoking. METHODS: We investigated the associations of known and suspected breast cancer risk factors with breast density in a large breast cancer family study. Information was collected on members of 4

Neurofibromatosis type 1 in childhood: evaluation of clinical and epidemiologic features as predictive factors for severity.

The authors evaluated clinical and epidemiologic features of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) as predictive factors of severity of the disease. The data were retrieved from medical records of 110 children with NF-1 followed up during the period 1974-1991 (mean duration of follow-up 6.7 years). Presence of macrocephaly correlated with higher grade of severity of the disease (P = 0.018). Familial NF-1 was more common in patients with grade 4 disease than in children with grade 1 severity (P < 0.05; odds ratio 2.9, confidence limits 0.85-10.5). The specificity of positive family history and macroc

Projectile metallic foreign bodies in the orbit: a retrospective study of epidemiologic factors, management, and outcomes.

PURPOSE: Intraorbital projectile metallic foreign bodies are associated with significant ocular and orbital injuries. The authors sought to evaluate epidemiologic factors, the incidence of associated ocular and orbital injury, and the nature and necessity of surgical intervention in these cases. METHODS: Charts of all patients with projectile intraorbital metallic foreign bodies seen at our institution (27) over the preceding 7 years were evaluated with respect to age, sex, type of injury, associated ocular and orbital injuries, location of the projectile (anterior, epibulbar, or posterior),

Epidemiologic evaluation of the risk factors associated with exposure and seroreactivity to Bartonella vinsonii in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: To determine seroprevalence to Bartonella vinsonii subsp berkhoffii in a population of sick dogs from North Carolina and Virginia and to evaluate potential risk factors associated with increased likelihood of exposure to the organism. SAMPLE POPULATION: Serum samples from 1,920 sick dogs. PROCEDURE: An indirect fluorescent antibody assay was performed on each sample, and the end-point antibody titer was recorded. A case (seropositive) was defined as a dog with reciprocal titer > or = 64, and a control (seronegative) was defined as a dog with reciprocal titer < 16 that was referre

Progress in the Study of Epidemiologic Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Asymptomatic Malaria Infection in Africa.

Malaria is caused by protozoan parasitic Plasmodium infections. Plasmodium falciparum is common in Africa; P ovale, P malaria and P vivax infections are less prevalent and globally confined, contributing to major causes of global mortality and morbidity, particularly in children in sub-Saharan African countries. In 2018, the total incidence of malaria increased from 221 million to 229 million, with an estimated 503 000 deaths reported. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of cases of malaria and highest mortality rate compared with other countries, like southeastern Asia, east Pacific, we

A population-based epidemiologic study of adult-onset narcolepsy incidence and associated risk factors, 2004-2013.

An increase in narcolepsy incidence was noted after the novel pandemic influenza of 2009, leading to further interest in risk factors associated with this disease. However, there is limited data on the epidemiology of narcolepsy, particularly in the adult population. Therefore, we sought to examine narcolepsy incidence rates in the United States and describe associated characteristics. We performed a population based epidemiologic study of active duty military personnel. All outpatient clinics in the continental United States providing care for active duty military between 2004 through 2013 we
