Distal phalangeal bone cysts: differentiation of enchondromata and epidermal cysts.

Enchondromas are common in the hand but less frequent in the distal phalanges. Epidermal cysts are rare in the hand but when they occur can be difficult to differentiate from enchondromas both clinically and radiologically. Our review of seven distal phalangeal bone lesions treated over 7 years included four enchondromas and three epidermal cysts. The patients with epidermal cysts all had a history of previous penetrating trauma 5-8 years earlier. One patient with an enchondroma had a history of a penetrating injury. Patients presenting with distal phalangeal lesions and a history of previous …

Pararectal Epidermal Inclusion Cyst in a Pediatric Patient.

Epidermal inclusion cysts, commonly found cutaneously, rarely manifest in the pelvis. They are typically asymptomatic and often occur following trauma or surgical interventions. Imaging modalities, notably computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), play a crucial diagnostic role. Herein, we report a rare case of a four-year-old female with a complicated medical and surgical history, presented with pain in the right gluteal region in the setting of past history of abscess drainage in the same area. Imaging revealed a cystic lesion in the right pararectal space and a fi

Factors affecting complications after treatment of epidermal cyst.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts are the most common benign epithelial tumors in humans. The curative treatment of epidermal cyst is surgical excision. However, only few studies have investigated the cause and mechanism of postoperative complications of epidermal cysts. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the factors affecting complications of epidermal cyst after surgical treatment. METHODS: Patients with histologically diagnosed epidermal cysts were selected from among 98 consecutive patients with excised benign cystic tumors from March 2014 to August 2017. Sex, age, size, mobility, site of …

Merkel Cell Carcinoma Arising in an Epidermal Cyst.

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor. It is associated mostly with malignant skin lesions. Rare cases in the literature described its association with benign skin adnexal lesions. We present here an additional case of Merkel cell carcinoma arising from an epidermal cyst located in the left arm of a 57-year-old male. The tumor was composed of lobules of monotonous round cells with dusty chromatin. It was positive for cytokeratin 20 and neuroendocrine markers. Patient was treated with surgical resection and radiation to the axilla. He is well and free…

Epidermal cyst attached to the chorda tympani nerve.

The incidental post-mortem finding of a small epidermal cyst in the middle ear of a 78-year-old female is presented. The epidermal cyst was attached to the chorda tympani nerve adjacent to the body of the incus, but was not associated with bony erosion or any other suggestion of enlargement or invasive growth. The pathological relationship of this lesion to previously reported "congenital cholesteatomas" of the middle ear is discussed.

Bowenoid papulosis in a penile epidermal inclusion cyst.

We report a case of bowenoid papulosis occurring in an epidermal inclusion cyst. This is, to our knowledge, the first reported case of these lesions occurring in an inclusion cyst.

Trigeminal pain caused by a parapontine epidermal cyst.

A case of trigeminal neuralgia caused by a parapontine epidermal cyst is reported. The trigeminal inlet zone at the pons was completely surrounded by the tumor. No vascular element was detected around the trigeminal nerve root. Neurological symptoms were completely normal except for typical tic douloureux. Pain was controlled initially by carbamazepine, later by radiofrequency trigeminal nerve coagulation, and finally by microsurgical decompression. Review of the literature suggested the importance of lesions of the middle fossa as another etiological factor. When surgery is performed by the p…
