Computer-assisted video biomicroscopy of bulbar conjunctiva was employed to examine the sequelae of endothelial dysfunction manifested by microcirculatory bed abnormalities and microcirculation disturbances. The signs of endothelial dysfunction provoked by tobacco smoking in young adults disappeared after cessation of smoking, which resulted in pronounced widening of arterioles and capillaries as well as moderation of intravascular erythrocyte aggregation.

The present study revealed morphological changes that permit to distinguish between fatal cases caused by acute alcoholic intoxication, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, and drunkenness in subjects with coronary heart disease. It demonstrated the most characteristic histological features associated with lethal alcoholic intoxication, such as erythrocyte aggregation, blood sludge deposition in venules, cardiomyocitolysis, vascular plasmatization, dissociation of cardiomyocytes, etc.

The blood viscosity and related factors were determined in 31 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and 30 normal subjects. After in vitro treatment of normal, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient or pyruvate kinase-deficient human erythrocytes with three different oxidizing agents, the extent of lipid peroxidative degradation and the alterations of membrane proteins were evaluated.
