A series of studies with aspartame were run in mice, rats and rabbits using standard procedures to characterize possible estrogenic, androgenic, progestational and glucocorticoid activities. This study examined the effects of diet on the development of prostatitis in male rats. Adult male rats were placed on either of two specially formulated diets which differed from one another by the presence or absence of soy as the protein source. We tested whether dietary soybeans alter prostatic growth and development of prostatic dysplasia in mice that were treated with a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen, diethylstilbestrol during the first 3 d after birth. This work explores the relationships between a user's choice of a given contraceptive option and the load of steroidal estrogens that can be associated with that choice.
