PURPOSE: To evaluate the ocular complications of paintball injuries in children.
METHODS: The clinical course of four children with traumatic ocular paintball injuries was evaluated. All patients underwent a complete ocular examination. Their age, injuries sustained, surgical procedure(s) performed, presence of protective eyewear at the time of injury, and final visual outcome was assessed. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiology of eye injuries sustained by professional basketball players in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
METHODS: A prospective study involving all NBA athletes who sustained eye injuries between February 1, 1992, and June 20, 1993, was conducted. Twenty-seven NBA team athletic trainers, physicians, and ophthalmologists were provided data forms to complete for any player examined for an eye injury. INTRODUCTION: Combat ocular trauma (COT) represents a significant risk to U.S. warfighters, and the cost of COT can be substantial. We quantified the economic value associated with vision improvements from COT treatment and the potential value of treatment innovation or other interventions that result in better final vision following COT. Finally, we modeled the value associated with improved combat eye protection (CEP) compliance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an economic model to simulate COT injuries, treatment, and lifetime economic and vision outcomes for U.S. warfighters aged 25.

"War games" are gaining popularity in the western United States. These recreational contests involve members of one team attempting to shoot their opponents with high-velocity dye or paint pellets fired from air guns. Unfortunately, serious eye injuries occur when participants do not use protective eye wear. We report a case of severe blunt ocular trauma resulting in a hyphema, choroidal rupture, and retinal and vitreal hemorrhage secondary to a paint pellet striking an unprotected eye. This injury resulted in a significant visual defect in this patient.

The penetration of a pseudophakic eye by a high-speed metallic foreign body is reported. The path of the steel missile was interrupted by the intraocular lens, which was fixed within the capsular remnant, preventing missile penetration into the posterior segment. Although the foreign body was removed from the anterior chamber without immediate sequelae, several months later a peripheral retinal detachment occurred. Prompt recognition and treatment resulted in the retention of excellent pseudophakic vision. The importance of postoperative protective eyewear is emphasized.

This is the first published report of the swimmer's nose deformity. This common athletic deformity has a characteristic, asymmetric dorsolateral nasal hump that progressively develops over years during a competitive swimming career and persists after cessation of the sport. The cause is thought to be bone and soft tissue remodeling in response to repetitive trauma chronically inflicted by a swimmer's goggles during the water reentry phase of breathing.
