INTRODUCTION: Our research group has described both morphological and electrophysiological changes in motor cortex pyramidal neurons associated with contralateral facial nerve injury in rats. However, little is known about those neural changes, which occur together with changes in surrounding glial cells.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effect of the unilateral facial nerve injury on microglial proliferation and activation in the primary motor cortex.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed immunohistochemical experiments in order to detect microglial cells in brain tissue of rats with unilateral

One hundred closed head injuries associated with facial fractures treated over a 78-month period at a level I trauma center in Northeast Ohio were reviewed. The incidence of closed head injury in patients with facial fractures was 17.5%. Males suffered closed head injuries four times more often than females, and sustained severe intracranial injuries eight times as often. The 16- to 30-year age group predominated (59%). Although motor vehicle accidents were the most frequent cause of injury (61%), motorcycle accidents were associated with the most severe head injury. The mandible/midface fract

Ocular injury can be associated with facial fractures in a significant percentage of cases. It is mandatory for surgeons treating such fractures to be familiar with the types of orbital injuries, the appropriate physical examination and diagnostic tests, and the management techniques involved in treating traumatic visual loss. This article reviews the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this important problem.

This systematic review was conducted to identify the incidence, nature and mechanisms of head, neck and facial (HNF) injuries in cricket and the reported use of helmets. Five databases were searched up to 30th November 2020. From peer-reviewed cricket injury studies published in English, studies reporting on HNF cricket injuries as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were selected. Twenty-nine studies were included. HNF injuries had a cumulative total of 794/5,886 injuries equating to 13% of all injuries. Non- specified HNF injuries (n

INTRODUCTION: The face is the area most vulnerable for dog bites in children. Surgical management is an emergency to prevent infection, functional and aesthetic outcomes. The aim of this study was to define a new gravity scale, and to determine a prevention policy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our maxillofacial and plastic surgery department, we conducted a retrospective study from 2002 to 2010, including 77 children under 16 years old, victims of facial dog bite. We analyzed epidemiological, clinical data, surgical outcomes.
RESULTS: The mean age was 5.36 years. Dogs were principally represente

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and experiences of New Zealand horse riding schools with regard to horse-related facial injuries. All the riding schools listed in the New Zealand electronic phonebook directory were surveyed by post. The survey questions covered riding schools' perceptions of rider profile, general and facial injury patterns and safety equipment used. The face was perceived to be the most common injury site by only 4% of respondents. Helmets were enforced in only 35% of the schools during unmounted activities. Nearly half the schools did not enforce any safety e…

This study analysed the prevalence, demography, soft- and hard-tissue injury patterns, management and complications of gunshot injuries to the maxillo-facial region in 301 patients treated at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. The number of patients presenting with maxillo-facial injuries caused by gunshot increased over the 15-year study period. The majority were caused by civilian type low-velocity hand-guns and were purposefully and intentionally inflicted by others. Males in their third decade of life and of low socioeconomic status were most often the victims. The wounding effects of thes…

Concepts in the treatment of craniomaxillofacial fractures have changed over the last 15 years. Modern imaging techniques have become a central part in establishing a proper diagnosis. Advanced life support and intensive care medicine allow for early primary fracture treatment. The former principles of minimal exposure of bone fragments using small incisions have been replaced by principles from reconstructive craniofacial surgery comprising extensive subperiosteal dissection, exposure of all fracture lines, open reduction and rigid internal fixation. Missing bony structures are replaced prima

Trauma of the facial skeleton often occurs together with other injuries. Treatment of these patients demand cooperation of all surgical disciplines in order to ensure operative treatment in only a few steps. In all facial injury, fractures of the facial skeleton must be excluded. In clinical examination, occlusion of the teeth is a very important symptom, diagnosis is established by radiology. It is the aim of the treatment to restore the facial skeleton in a good occlusion and position of the bones. It is necessary to restore the function of the stomatognatic system, of the paranasal sinuses

Bite mark evidence has been admitted in a vast number of cases in courts throughout the United States, as well as other countries. Because there is variation in the dentition of humans, if bite marks are noted in a victim, it is possible in many cases to determine the identity of the perpetrator depending on the quality of the bite mark, its age, lack of distortion and documentation. In other cases, facial injuries, including damage to the frenum and teeth in addition to the face, may point to nonaccidental injury if the history corroborates this condition.

A common sequela of peripheral nerve injury is aberrant regeneration and recovery. Aberrant regeneration of injured motor nerves can affect all aspects of the nerve circuit from the motor cortex to the target muscle. A more comprehensive term for the symptoms that develop after aberrant motor neuromuscular reinnervation is aberrant reinnervation syndrome (ARS). Injury to the facial nerve followed by aberrant reinnervation results in a spectrum of symptoms that has been called many things in the literature. The authors support that this commonly encountered sequela of facial nerve injury be cal

Facial nerve paresis is an uncommon but concerning condition in the pediatric population. The function and anatomy of the facial nerve is complex, and injuries to this structure may be associated with devastating physiological and psychological implications for the affected child and family. The purpose of this paper was to report a case involving a six-year-old Caucasian female who suffered a blunt traumatic injury to the orofacial region resulting in partial paralysis of the seventh cranial nerve. Following the injury, the child was unable to fully elevate the corner of her mouth. The defici

This study describes changes in a rat facial muscle innervated by the mandibular and buccal facial nerve branches 4 months after nerve injury and repair. The following groups were studied: (A) normal controls; (B) spontaneous reinnervation by collateral or terminal sprouting; (C) reinnervation after surgical repair of the mandibular branch; and (D) chronic denervation. The normal muscle contained 1200 exclusively fast fibers, mainly myosin heavy chain (MyHC) IIB fibers. In group B, fiber number and fiber type proportions were normal. In group C, fiber number was subnormal. Diameters and propor

Hypoglossal-facial anastomosis has been our procedure of choice in the repair of the permanently injured facial nerve in the cerebellopontine cistern, when the nerve cannot be primarily repaired. Total failures are few and complications are rare. Most results are good to excellent, if assessment is based upon realistic expectations. These include: 1. normal facial symmetry in repose, 2. good midface voluntary motion, 3. no reflex or emotional facial movement, 4. some synkinesis and donor-injected mass facial movement, and 5. surprisingly little functional loss from hypoglossal paralysis. INTRODUCTION: Facial fractures are relatively uncommon in the pediatric population, especially those inflicted as a result of interpersonal violence in the form of gunshot injuries. Few studies have examined the unique management of such high-energy injuries in the pediatric population. Oftentimes the resultant damage to soft tissue and bony structures is so great that it challenges the previously accepted standards in the management of pediatric facial fractures. This study will examine a level 1 trauma center's experience with these unique injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all fa

Oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of facial nerve injury (FNI), yet the role of antioxidants in driving regeneration and functional recovery remains incompletely defined. This narrative review synthesizes studies published between 2008 and 2025 that evaluated antioxidant interventions in FNI across animal and limited human contexts. We systematically searched five databases and included 19 studies assessing oxidative stress markers and neural outcomes following antioxidant administration. To avoid overgeneralization, we stratified findings by injury model-crush/compression, tran
