Beak and feather dystrophy in wild sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita).

Three flocks of wild sulphur-crested cockatoos in southeastern Australia had a 10-20% prevalence of feather and beak deformities. In affected birds, the crest, tail, contour and down feathers were lost or reduced in length owing to a "pinching off" 0.5-1 cm above the skin. The underlying skin was discolored brown. Flight feathers appeared normal and could sustain flight. In mildly affected birds, only the crest and down feathers were involved. Histological examination of affected feathers showed necrosis of developing cells in their epidermal collars. The epidermis was moderately hyperplastic …

Histoplasma capsulatum isolated from feather pillow associated with histoplasmosis in an infant.

Feathers from an old baby pillow yielded Histoplasma capsulatum in an epidemiologic study of histoplasmosis in an infant. Efforts to exclude other possible sources of infection, including blood donor and placental transmission, were exhaustive. Although histoplasmosis has long been associated with soils in avian habitats, the feather itself has not been implicated heretofore.

Damages on arctic seabird feathers: Exposure to low sulphur fuel oils is comparable to exposure to conventional oil.

New fuel oils with low content of sulphur are entering the market due to recent international regulations on the sulphur content. These oils show large variations in properties, but many have high pour points, low dispersibility and low evaporation, important for oil spill consequences. Though oil spills may be mitigated by e.g. in-situ burning, remaining residues may still be harmful for wildlife, particularly seabirds. Here, we quantified weight increase and clumping of barbules using the Amalgamation Index [AI] on seabird feathers following exposure to three different low sulphur fuel oils …

Continued presence of enrofloxacin residues in feathers of broiler parent stock based on quantitative UHPLC-MS/MS detection.

Fluoroquinolones (FQ) are critically important antimicrobials. When broilers are treated with FQs, residues of these compounds can accumulate in their feathers, posing potential risks if feathers are repurposed, such as for use in animal feed. The aim of this study was to determine the residue depletion profiles of enrofloxacin (ENR) and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) in broiler parent stock feathers by using a sensitive UHPLC-MS/MS method. The total antibiotic residue concentration was determined. An experimental study was conducted with a treatment group and a control group. In the treat…

Optimizing Genomic DNA Extraction from Avian Feathers: A Modified Phenol-Chloroform Approach for Enhanced Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness.

The procurement of blood and tissue samples for DNA extraction in avian species intended for molecular studies is associated with the induction of discomfort and pain in the subjects, compounded by practical challenges in application and ethical considerations. Consequently, feathers have emerged as a more prevalent source for molecular investigations, particularly in the fields of poultry and ornithology. However, the effective extraction of DNA from feathers necessitates the breakdown of the hard keratinized tissue within the feather structure. This study aimed to devise a highly efficient, …

Sorption behavior of artificial keratin fibers from feathers with anionically charged azo and anthraquinone dyes for potential industrial applications.

Sorption thermodynamics and kinetics of 100 % artificial keratin fibers with acid dyes have been studied to understand the surface properties, dyeability, and suitability for industrial applications. For a sustainable textile fiber industry, affordable biobased fibers with good dyeability and performance properties are essential for commercial acceptance. Artificial keratin fibers developed from waste feathers have already demonstrated excellent strength and wet stability due to their high degree of disulfide crosslinkages and can be cost-effective as well. However, their dyeability and relate…

Novel tissue mechanics-guided cellular flows drive the formation of feather follicles.

Complex tissue architecture is achieved through multiple rounds of morphological transitions. Here, we analyzed cellular flows and tissue mechanics during avian skin development by employing chicken and transgenic quail skin explant models. We demonstrate how novel cellular flows initiate chemo-mechanical circuits that guide epithelial protrusion, folding, invagination, and spatial cell fate specification. During initial feather bud formation, stiff dermal condensates protrude vertically from the locally softened epithelial sheet. As the bud elongates, it stretches the epithelial cells at the

Effects of Lipopolysaccharide Challenge on Growth Performance and Immune Function of Yellow-Feathered Broilers.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of lipopolysaccharide challenge on growth performance and immune function in yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 140 yellow-feathered broilers (1-day-old) were randomly assigned to two treatments (control group and LPS group) with seven replicates of 10 chicks each. Broilers in the LPS group were injected intraperitoneally with LPS (1 mg/kg body weight) on days 21, 23, 25, and 27, while broilers in the control group were injected intraperitoneally at an equivalent volume of sterile saline on the corresponding days. After 24 h of each injection, one

Immunogenicity of DNA, mRNA and Subunit Vaccines Against Beak and Feather Disease Virus.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), affecting psittacine birds. There is currently no commercial vaccine or treatment for this disease. This study developed a novel BFDV coat protein mRNA vaccine encapsidated by TMV coat protein to form pseudovirions (PsVs) and tested its immunogenicity alongside BFDV coat protein (CP) subunit and DNA vaccine candidates. METHODS: mRNA and BFDV CP subunit vaccine candidates were produced in Nicotiana benthamiana and subsequently purified using PEG precipitation and g

Replication kinetics of turkey herpesvirus in lymphoid organs and feather follicle epithelium in chickens.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) is an oncogenic alphaherpesvirus that causes immunosuppression, T-cell lymphomas, and neuropathic disease in infected chickens. To protect chickens from MDV infection, an avirulent live vaccine of turkey herpesvirus (HVT) has been successfully used for chickens worldwide. Similar to MDV for natural infection in both chickens and turkeys, HVT also infects lung in the early stage of infection and then lymphocytes from lymphoid organs. Virus replication requires cell-to-cell contact for spreading and semi-productive lytic replication in T and B cells. Then, cell-free i

Ingestion of Lactobacillus rhamnosus modulates chronic stress-induced feather pecking in chickens.

Feather pecking (FP) is a stress-induced neuropsychological disorder of birds. Intestinal dysbiosis and inflammation are common traits of these disorders. FP is, therefore, proposed to be a behavioral consequence of dysregulated communication between the gut and the brain. Probiotic bacteria are known to favorably modulate the gut microbiome and hence the neurochemical and immune components of the gut-brain axis. Consequently, probiotic supplementation represents a promising new therapeutic to mitigate widespread FP in domestic chickens. We monitored FP, gut microbiota composition, immune mark

Resistance of Feather-Associated Bacteria to Intermediate Levels of Ionizing Radiation near Chernobyl.

Ionizing radiation has been shown to produce negative effects on organisms, although little is known about its ecological and evolutionary effects. As a study model, we isolated bacteria associated with feathers from barn swallows Hirundo rustica from three study areas around Chernobyl differing in background ionizing radiation levels and one control study site in Denmark. Each bacterial community was exposed to four different γ radiation doses ranging from 0.46 to 3.96 kGy to test whether chronic exposure to radiation had selected for resistant bacterial strains. Experimental radiation durati…

[Improved IgG Antibody Diagnostics of Feather Duvet Lung by an Antibody Screening Test].

The underdiagnosed feather duvet lung, an extrinsic allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) caused by duck and goose feathers, can be more frequently diagnosed, if duck and goose feather antibodies are included in the panel of the routinely applied IgG antibody screening test. This does not necessarily require extending the screening test to include duck and goose feather antigens. By analysing 100 sera with duck and goose antibodies we found that the commonly used pigeon and budgerigar antibodies can also screen for feather duvet antibodies. All examined sera lacking pigeon and bud…

The effect of dietary alterations during rearing on feather condition in broiler breeder females.

In commercial production, broiler breeders are severely feed restricted to maintain healthy BW. This restriction can induce stereotypic behavior, including feather pecking, which has negative welfare implications for both the victim and performer. It has been suggested that the problem may be symptomatic of chronic hunger or the frustration of feeding motivation. In this study, we determined whether feather condition, as an indirect measure of feather pecking, could be improved via dietary manipulation. Six dietary treatments were tested, each with 5 replicate pens of 9 to 12 birds. Control di

Quantitative genetic analysis of traits related to fear and feather pecking in laying hens.

Feather pecking is a well known problem in flocks of laying hens. It is partially controlled by genetics. Fear is frequently reported to be related with feather pecking. The present study reports the result from a quantitative genetic analysis of feather pecking and three fear test traits in laying hens. Fear was recorded by the tonic immobility test, the open field activity and the emergence box test. These were recorded at a juvenile and adult age of the hens. The heritability of feather pecking was 0.16, and in the range between 0.07 and 0.14 for the fear test traits. Genetic correlations b
