INTRODUCTION: Placenta accreta spectrum disorders (PAS) lead to major complications in pregnancy. While the maternal morbidity associated with PAS is well known, there is less information regarding neonatal morbidity in this setting. The aim of this study is to describe the neonatal outcomes (fetal malformations, neonatal morbidity, twin births, stillbirth, and neonatal death), using an international multicenter database of PAS cases.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective, multicenter cohort study based on prospectively collected cases, using the international multicenter database of t

OBJECTIVE: To determine more precisely the incidence of fetal complications following maternal parvovirus B19 infection at various gestational ages.
METHODS: An observational prospective study of 1018 pregnant women whose acute B19 infection was serologically confirmed in our laboratory.
RESULTS: The observed rate of fetal death throughout pregnancy was 6.3% (64/1018) (95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.9, 8.0). The fetal death rate for those infected within the first 20 weeks of gestation (WG) was 64/579 (11.0%). Fetal death was only observed when maternal B19 infection occurred before the com

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for and management of intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) have been investigated, but the maternal morbidity has not been evaluated.
METHODS: Over a 60-month interval, all cases of IUFD after 20 weeks' gestation were reviewed for maternal trauma and maternal postpartum complications.
RESULTS: In this retrospective analysis, 498 singleton and 24 twin pregnancies with an IUFD were identified. A cervical or perineal laceration requiring surgical repair complicated 9.4% of pregnancies. One uterine dehiscence and one uterine rupture occurred. Endometritis, the most common po

A survey of factors associated with perinatal mortality in 511 twins and fetal growth retardation and its reversal in 262 twins is presented. The incidence of stillbirth was almost 50% higher in twins than in singletons and the neonatal mortality was six times as high. Eighty percent of the neonatal deaths occurred in infants born prior to or at 30 weeks of gestation; 93% of the deaths were in infants weighing less than 1500 g and 75% occurred within 48 hours of birth. Fetal malnutrition was the main cause of stillbirth, and respiratory distress syndrome and asphyxia neonatorum were the main c

An unusual mortality event (UME) involving primarily common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus of all size classes stranding along coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, USA, started in early 2010 and continued into 2014. During this northern Gulf of Mexico UME, a distinct cluster of perinatal dolphins (total body length <115 cm) stranded in Mississippi and Alabama during 2011. The proportion of annual dolphin strandings that were perinates between 2009 and 2013 were compared to baseline strandings (2000-2005). Congenital malformations are a known cause of intrauterine death; of them, congenital heart diseases (CHDs) are accountable for the highest fetal and neonatal mortality rates. They are strongly associated with other extracardiac malformations and an early fetal mortality. Two hundred and twenty fves cases of CHDs are presented. Of them, 155 were isolated CHDs (group A) and 70 were associated with extracardiac malformations, chromosomal disorders, or genetic syndromes (group B). The overall mortality in group B was higher than that observed in group A (p <0.01). Prenatal mortality was similar i…

Spontaneous hematoma of the umbilical cord represents a rare cause of fetal morbidity and mortality and the outcome is poor in half of the cases. There are many risk factors, such as infections, morphologic anomalies, alterations of the vessel walls, prolapses, twisting and traction of the cord, but in many cases the causes remain unknown. We present 3 cases of umbilical cord hematoma which took place at the end of the pregnancy and were followed by perinatal death of the fetus. In the 3 cases, which were autopsied including macroscopical and histopathologic examination of the placenta and the

METHODS: Rates and causes of traumatic injury-related fetal deaths in Pennsylvania were determined from a manual review of all fetal death certificates filed from 1995 to 1997 (7,131 cases).
RESULTS: Thirty one traumatic injury cases were identified (6.5/100,000 live births). Most cases (94%) could be identified from the diagnosis code of 760.5 (maternal injury) and 87% contained narratives indicating specific injury mechanisms. Motor vehicles were the leading cause of injury (81%). Placental separation was the leading diagnosis (42%).
CONCLUSIONS: The ICD-9-CM code 760.5 appears to be a spe

This article analyzes teenage pregnancy and other risk factors for fetal and infant mortality in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The study included a sample of births in Rio de Janeiro, and exposure variables were organized hierarchically. For fetal death, the results showed the protective effect of adequate prenatal care, while maternal morbidity increased the risk. For neonatal death, adequate prenatal care and female gender in the newborn were protective factors, while black or brown maternal skin color, history of stillbirth, maternal morbidity, and physical aggression during the index

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of intrapair birth weight discordance with fetal and neonatal mortality.
METHODS: We used the United States (1995-1997) Matched Multiple Birth File (n = 297,155).
RESULTS: Among twin live births and stillborn fetuses, 29.9% had less than 5% birth weight discordance, 24.2% had 5-9%, 29.6% had 10-19%, 11.1% had 20-29%, 3.4% had 30-39%, and 1.8% had 40% or more. The stillborn fetus rate increased progressively with increasing birth weight discordance for smaller and larger twins of the same sex. Compared with the less than 5% birth weight discordance catego

BACKGROUND: The AFFIRM intervention aimed to reduce stillbirth and neonatal deaths by increasing awareness of reduced fetal movements (RFM) and implementing a care pathway when women present with RFM. Although there is uncertainty regarding the clinical effectiveness of the intervention, the aim of this analysis was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness.
METHODS: A stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised trial was conducted in thirty-three hospitals in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland. All women giving birth at the study sites during the analysis period were included in the study. The costs associa

BACKGROUND: Children exposed prenatally to alcohol or cannabinoids individually can exhibit growth deficits and increased risk for adverse birth outcomes. However, these drugs are often co-consumed and their combined effects on early brain development are virtually unknown. The blood vessels of the fetal brain emerge and mature during the neurogenic period to support nutritional needs of the rapidly growing brain, and teratogenic exposure during this gestational window may therefore impair fetal cerebrovascular development.
STUDY DESIGN: To determine whether prenatal polysubstance exposure co

OBJECTIVE: To review the available literature on outcome of pregnancy when an isolated single umbilical artery (iSUA) is diagnosed at the time of the mid-trimester anomaly scan.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (1948-2012), EMBASE (1980-2012) and the Cochrane Library (until 2012) for relevant citations reporting on outcome of pregnancy with iSUA seen on ultrasound. Data were extracted by two reviewers. Where appropriate, we pooled odds ratios (ORs) for the dichotomous outcome measures: small for gestational age (SGA), perinatal mortality and aneuploidy. For birth weight we determined the mean dif

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate perinatal outcomes in case of gestational diabetes (GD) treated or not.
METHODS: This study is based on Pubmed search and on NICE and HAS recommendations.
RESULTS: Moderate or severe GD increases the risk of foetal and neonatal complications [EL1]. The risk of malformation is slightly increased in case of GD compared with non diabetic population [EL2]. The increased risk of malformation is probably linked to undiagnosed cases of type 2 diabetes among cases of GD [EL2]. There is a continuous association of maternal glucose levels with increased birth weight [EL2]. The i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Extreme early-onset fetal growth restriction (EE-FGR) is associated with significant perinatal morbidity and mortality. As short- and long-term prognoses are influenced by both gestational age and severity of FGR, quantifying risk is inherently challenging. We hypothesized that a meta-analysis would provide quantifiable estimates of perinatal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by EE-FGR.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases for relevant studies published from inception to March 2024. We included all original studies involving sin

Comparative data on fetal and neonatal deaths following maternal mumps, rubella, hepatitis, chicken pox and measles were obtained in a prospective study in New York City from 1957 to 1964, inclusive. The evidence pointed to an increase in early fetal death rate after rubella and mumps and an increase in perinatal mortality after rubella and hepatitis. A significant increase in these rates was not demonstrable for chicken pox and measles in the selected population studied and under the conditions of the present study. The lethal effects of maternal virus diseases were demonstrable in cases of m
